As the last remaining Australian in the women’s draw, Jelena Dokic will be looking to cause a big upset when she meets Marion Bartoli of France on Rod Laver Arena tonight. Join us for live scores and blog from 7:00pm AEST.

Despite a convincing win over Russian Anna Chakvetadze in the first round, Dokic is in for a tough night against Bartoli.

The 29 year old Australian will have to play some inspired tennis if she is to get the better of a player who looks a good bet to challenge for the Australian Open title come January 28.

Bartoli is a very physical player, and has the capacity to overpower Dokic with her deep, flat groundstrokes off both the forehand and backhand.

The French woman has already provided a masterclass against Dokic this year, beating the Australian 6-0-, 6-3 at the Apia International a couple of weeks ago.

If Dokic is to avoid a similar scoreline, then she must go on the offensive anytime Bartoli returns with a short ball.

At her best, Dokic also possesses powerful groundstrokes, particularly off the backhand side where she did so much damage during that memorable run to the Australian Open quarter-finals in 2009.

One feels that Dokic will need to produce something similar if she is to defy the odds and progress to the third round of the Australian Open.

Prediction

This match is firmly on Bartoli’s racquet. The French woman loves to play at a high tempo and will look to use her penetrating ground strokes to get on top of Dokic early in the match.

If Bartoli does register an early break, then the No.9 seed could secure her passage into the third round in quick time.

With seemingly nothing to lose however, Dokic may just see this match as an opportunity to loosen up and play the aggressive game that earned her a quarter-final birth at the 2009 Australian Open.

At this stage though, Bartoli appears a safe bet to win this match comfortably in straight sets.
