It’s time for midweek A-League football as Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets heading to Carrington Park, Bathurst for their regional match with both sides needing a win to keep finals hopes alive. Join us from 8.00pm for minute by minute commentary.
John Kosmina would have left Bluetongue Stadium feeling more than just a little hard done by on Saturday evening, after his side took a 2-1 lead early on before succumbing to two late goals from the league leaders.
It was yet another indication of the quality performances that he has been able to produce from this Reds squad, but the loss serves as a reminder of exactly what i required to drag Adelaide into the top six.
They currently sit in eight position on 19 points but are only four points from sixth-placed Sydney, and they get a great opportunity to pick up another three tonight.
After Perth and Wellington have managed to pick up wins on the road in the last few rounds, Newcastle Jets must surely take the mantle of the worst travelling sides in the competition, managing a meagre two points away from home all season.
With a solid hom record early on in the season Newcastle had sat as high as third, but even that has deteriorated over the past six weeks and they now sit second last, having won only once in their past seven.
Coach Gary van Egmond is faced with the awkward proposition of trying to re-program a squad he has inherited to play his style of football while at the same time trying to maintain winning results.
With the Jets managing only three wins in the 14 games van Egmond has been in charge, it’s fair to say it hasn’t worked out so far.
But tonight they meet Adelaide on neutral ground and if they do harbour any hopes of a resurgence this season, they must show something – anything – tonight.
It might be eighth up against ninth but that’s not to say it will be any less willing than a top of the table clash, with the chance of finals football still up for grabs. Who takes it? Find out here from 8.00pm AEDT as we cover the action with minute by minute commentary.

FULL TIME: Adelaide United 1-1 Newcastle Jets
Surprisingly good game here in Bathurst. Looks to be a fairly casual sort of affair early in the first half, but as the tempo increased the chances began to flow. In the second half, Adelaide were rewarded for their enterprise with a goal to Van Dijk and it looked to be enough to win as they pushed toward a second. But a goal to substitute Jobe Wheelhouse turned this one on his head and once it was levelled up, it was nearly all Jets afterwards, and they might feel aggrieved not to get the three points. As Griffo pointed out, a point really helps neither team, and both sides look suitably deflated afterwards.
Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy what looks to be a tasty extended weekend of A-League action.

Interesting decision there from the ref. Kantarovski plays in Brockie, who gets into the box and looks to like up a cross/shot before Mullen is able to slide in a deflect. The ball gets caught under Mullen’s body, and there is a BIG shout from Brockie for the penalty, but the shout is waved away.

Wheelhouse, Wheelhouse, Wheelhouse. Zadkovich intercepts and counters down the right, looks up and has three or four players streaming forward and squares it to Wheelhouse. Rather than take a touch and then keep the ball moving, he lines up a first-time shot on the turn from 30m and it sails three metres over the bar.
Pathetic from one of the most experienced players in the team.

Well done there from Kennedy to get out and block off Djite, who was lining up an attempt on goal. Malik broke through the middle and slid a ball into Djite – probably took him a little wide though. Adelaide continue to roll on here, and it looks like a goal is certainly in the offing if the Jets don’t respond soon.

Adelaide have started the second half the far better of the two. Vidosic looks to have dropped a little bit deeper into the midfield and as a result are picking up a lot more of the ball. He releases he perfectly weighted ball in behind Elrich and Ramsay is able to whip in another dangerous cross.

Back underway in Bathurst. Adelaide have a free kick 30m out after Jesic brings down Vidosic. Vidosic whips it in, Boogaard outjumps Regan, but the header goes straight to Kennedy.

GVE will have to do something with the backline – the idea is to have one man spare in defence to cover. Adelaide often had three men crowding down the man with the ball, closing down the passing options. More options even then from midfield would be good, maybe GVE will revert to his favourite 4-2-3-1?
9:03pm
Chad Bennett said | 9:03pm | Report comment
Think it might require too much restructuring up at the pointy end I think – can’t see how it would work with 3 genuine strikers and then Jesic. I think maybe just getting Tarek to play a little bit more deeper might be more of an answer.

Nearly a decent chance there for the Reds. The balls flies up in the air after a Topor-Stanley challenge, and Vidosic makes an exquisite, absolutely exquisite, out of the air and it rolls through to Djite who is nearly one-on-one. Kennedy out sharply to shut it down.

Jets in particular really struggling to get any decent possession coming out from the back into their midfield. Whether it is decent pressing or just a lack of options other than Kantarovski I’m not sure, but it is causing them to play wide a little too often.

If only Tarek could control the ball. Jesic picks the ball up in a nice area in the Adelaide half, looks up and plays a nice 25m ball out wide on the right to a surging Elrich, he looks up, and as he has done way too many times in his 123 games in Jets colours, skews a cross straight out, out for a goal kick.
