In a world that has become so artificial, so corporate, that even the great old traditions of the AFL are contrived and manufactured, something special has happened. A footy song has emerged from the fans of the Greater Western Sydney Giants.
It has formed totally organically, not from some external source hiring an out-of work-muso, but from real fans. (Yes, the Giants do have a few.) It’s a blissful return to the old days when the great songs were coined, like the theme songs of the Swans, Richmond, and Collingwood.
But best of all its actually good.
Recent songs have been so awful. Perhaps lessons have been learnt from the Fremantle days and the failed strategy of marketing gurus who thought a ‘contemporary’ song would entice young people to games.
But this new song has something of the timeless quality inherent in the great songs. Those songs are not just marketing tools, they are something deeply ingrained in the culture of the club. They are songs the fans become nostalgic about, songs that make them well up with pride, and that keep them coming back week in and week out.
This song is the song of the diehard. It is the song of the loyal old lady who’s stuck with her club all her life and sings it with tears streaking down her face at the final siren of a long awaited grand final. It’s the song of a new father who proudly embraces his newborn baby and sings it softly in his ear.
So Giants fans, and footy fans in general, this is the song for us. It truly represents who we are and what we are about! I’m glad to say that whatever happens on the field this season, GWS are on to a winner.

I might point out this is another fan attempt at a song for GWS, it is not the clubs official song.

I believed it may have been true until the odd ‘central station’ line and the jarring repeat ending.
Arsenal’s own creation- pulled from somewhere?

Are you sure?
Great for a team starting in 1920.

And it will be, what? Next year before they get to sing it.

Obviously GCS thought it would be a year before they would sing theirs- needing the cue-card when they pipped Port. Incidentally I thought Gold Coast got it pretty right with their song. With a few tweaks this fan version wouldn’t be too bad either.

The unabashed plastic nature of this franchise just gets funnier. What a terrible song on its own, but it also serves to fool only the most mentally challenged into believing this team existed way back when awful music like this was popular. I think GWS must be an inside joke among some marketing executives. Just how far can they push this farce and still get braindead suburban families to buy tickets and merchandise?

Yea, this is a fake. The official youtube account of the giants is GWSGiants, not GWSGiants2012. This is fan-made.

I don’t understand why people are so against GWS?
For most people they are just happy to have a team they identify with. and it stops there.
I don’t think anyone is trying to pretend GWS has been around for 90 years. It’s a song that would be easy to chant at a game and its tribal. I think more teams would do well with songs of this nature.
reminds me of old school and club house songs.

I don’t mind that actually, though apparently it is fan-made and not official. I’m not sure about the “central station” line though. I don’t think it really fits with the rest of the song and it seems more like not being able to find words rhyming with nation…..

How about “suburbs without a station” because most of them dont have any public transport..

The Truth is pretty cynical but perhaps he doesnt support anything of note. I’m not sure how Gilbert and Sullivan would go in the west. How about the theme song from the film Giant somewhere bizarrely remixed and sung by the late James Dean…Kidding
