Tonight the Brisbane Roar host the Newcastle Jets in their A-League week 17 clash. Join us tonight from 7.45pm for live scores, blog updates and chat of the action at Suncorp Stadium.
This game features two teams from vastly contrasting ends of the performance spectrum. The Brisbane side is coming second on the ladder and has had a much more successful year to date than Newcastle coming second last.
While there is no relegation to fear, pride will play a big part in the Newcastle games from here on out this year. And in the A-League, such a tightly contested competition a few pieces in the right place could see them finish the season on a high with a view to being playing in the pointy end next year.
This week the gaffer will be emphasising the team work required to stall the Brisbane passing game that has made them the toast of the league over the last 24 months.
It has spluttered a little more than we are used to over the last couple of months and Newcastle will want to keep that trend alive.
Brisbane will be chomping at the bit tonight wanting to distance themselves from the field below them in the next few weeks.
They will want to have a few weeks to rest some important players and perfect the machine that won them last year’s championship before the play-offs start. Newcastle will be the kind of match they see themselves putting away a lot of the time.
Away from home you would have to suggest that Newcastle will struggle to match Brisbane on this occasion, however in this league you just never know.

Saw the 2nd half and wondered at times whether Nichols was playing for Raw or Jets! gave the ball away too easily. Congrats to GVE for building a defensive wall that kept Raw out. It’s a familiar theme this season – teams have battened down the hatches and asked Raw to penetrate them. Missing Berisha tonight?

Newcastle Jets have managed to get a goal on their best chance of the game. Brisbane Roar have failed to capitalise on the dominant field positions they enjoyed and the possession they hogged. A few of their chances were genuine but mostly they weren’t able to get the last pass in the right spot, let alone the shot.

They waste some more time with the corner (not illegaly, it just takes time to do) and then Brisbane run it right up field. Then they win a free kick in a good attacking position.

Brisbane had a chance there but Nichols wasn’t able to thread the ball through a fairly full box. Then there was a long cross that floated out the other sideline.
Newcastle get to hack it clear not long after and Brisbane try to challenge it back.

Don’t snap too hard! So far your side has done well when it does what it does best – playing keepings off. When they try to be too quick to attack it sometimes leaves them open at the back when so many of their midfield gets forward and the centre halves are split wide.

Thats a great half for Newcastle. They were under lots of pressure to start but were throwing their own punches. They obviously had a plan and stuck to it, trying to get their noses in front. They got their goal off their greatest chance. As soon as they scored they became more pragmatic, but they had what they wanted, a nose in front.
Brisbane started out very quickly and had a few chances to score but the last pass or final touch ruined those chances.
Roar will want to continue to hold ridiculous amounts of possession, doing that they began to tire out Newcastle who played on Wednesday night this week. Exciting second half to come!

Only 7mins left in the half before stoppage all of a sudden and Newcastle aren’t looking stressed at all. Brisbane has all of the ball but Newcastle are keeping it all in front of them for the most part. Very disciplined. Topor-Stanley diffused the only decent raid that Brisbane have had recently.

That time Brisbane broke into space when they turned the ball over, Newcastle weren’t chasing hard but they didn’t seem to want to push, they preferred to switch to keep the ball secure.
A longer ball is put through and Fitzgerald put a good power-o run block on to give away a foul.
Commentators saying that Brisbane has had a little belief go out of their game here. If thats true its amazing that a team who didn’t lose for the better part of 12 months can lose belief like this.

Brisbane aren’t as patient as they usually are tonight and Newcastle are trying harder in defense. A few sloppy passes meant that Brisbane didn’t get quality shots on goal earlier and all of a sudden they are harder to come by.
They have held the ball up in the final third a for a while now, then gone back and set up on the right instead. They are content to starve Newcastle a bit here. Madocca ends up losing possession as they speed up and Jets are on the ball and earn a foul.

If I told you how many times Brisbane were building up in midfeld your eyes would glaze over, so from now on I’ll just wait until the best parts of it or a truly attacking move. I’ll let you know when Newcastle do though as they have tended to skip over that part so far. They give long fast balls to try and stretch the field quickly. The midfield is more of a decoy.
Brisbane get to the box and Henrique had a shot sprayed well wide. He was fairly open there. Probably needed to get that on target.

Broich held a ball up and took 3 defenders, flicked to Nichols and he put a ball through for Henrique that was too heavy. Kennedy cleans it up.
Brisbane steal position quickly again and Henrique was chasing ANOTHER ball. Broich hit it too long and its a goal kick. They are stealing and getting forward quickly here. Almost less buildup than their normal style.
