Wellington Phoenix have the chance to claim outright second place this afternoon when they host Melbourne Heart at Westpac Stadium. We’ll have live scores from the kick-off at 2.30pm AEDT.
Over the recent seasons, it has been an all-too-familiar story with the Wellington Phoenix. They’ve been able to turn Westpac Stadium into a fortress but get them away from New Zealand and they’d crumble at the first sight of pressure.
But perhaps that might be changing. The Phoenix return to Westpac Stadium after a two-game road trip in which they picked up all six points.
Granted, they might have only beaten Gold Coast United and Newcastle Jets and scored one goal in each outing, but they showed a hard underside to their game and if they can continue getting points on the road, the Phoenix could be a genuine title threat.
This afternoon is the perfect opportunity for Ricki Herbert’s men to prove this when they host the fourth-placed Melbourne Heart.
The Heart are a side who will also almost certainly be there at the end of the season and today is a chance for the Phoenix to exact revenge after losing 1-0 in Morwell late last year.
Melbourne Heart have stuttered in recent weeks but showed enough in their 1-1 draw at home to Brisbane last Saturday that a return to their best might not be too far away.
John van’t Schip will lose three of his key players – Aziz Behich, Mate Dugandzic and Jason Hoffman – to Olyroo duty after this game and with the Melbourne Derby looming next weekend, he’ll view three points here as vital to cement their spot in the top four.
It is the first leg of a Sunday afternoon A-League double-header and with third meeting fourth it shapes as a quality contest. We’ll have live score updates from 2.30pm AEDT and if you’re watching, don’t hesitate to leave your opinion in the space below.

Why is there so little scrutiny of Melbourne Heart’s recent performances. MHT have the worst performance in the HAL over the past 6 games – 4 losses & 2 draws – but their coach & players avoid any type of media criticism. Is it that no one cares about MHT or is there an anti-MVFC agenda.
AUFC, too, look like getting smashed at home today. Let’s see if Kosmina faces the snide comments and ridicule on TWG tomorrow night that Magilton copped – after being in charge for only 2 games – from Foz et al last Monday.

Scrutiny is in direct proportion to the amount of self-generated publicity, hype and Harry- mania. The bigger they talk it up, etc blah etc. Still, 6 pts clear and the last derby result helps me to sleep OK.

MHT 6 points clear having played 1 extra game, don’t forget.
MVFC plays its game in hand on Wednesday in Tassie against bottom side, GCU. If we win, 3 pts separates MVFC & MHT before the Derby, which becomes a season-defining game. MVFC win and it’s “game on”; MHT win it’s “game over”.
I’ll stick with the facts and all I know is MHT is choking at the pointy end of the season. They have 1 win since the last Derby and haven’t won a game this year! Seems to be a case of too many young kids playing in an adult football league?

Yeah, looks like the wheels are falling off Heart. Don’t follow them enough to say for sure what might be the problem though I have heard some injuries have left them rather exposed.

Raced home to check out the 2nd half but honestly WTF was that? Credit to Nux in front of their home crowd.
