Melbourne Heart coach John van `t Schip will step down at the end of the season to return home to Europe, the A-League club has announced.
The Dutchman, who has been in charge of the Heart since their introduction to the league in 2009, is set to take up a managerial position in Europe.
“John arrived in Melbourne with a clear vision for the establishment of this club, as a proponent of the fundamental belief in challenging the status quo by demonstrating the importance of developing youth and instilling an ethos underlined by playing attractive, attacking football,” Sidwell said in a statement.
“Drawing on the methods of former mentors Johan Cruyff and Louis van Gaal, John duly delivered on his promise, offering unparalleled opportunity for development and growth to some of our most exciting young talents, in addition to uncovering a number of diamonds in the rough.”
The Heart have failed to feature in post-season action but have showed promise this season in positioning themselves in the top half of the table.
The news comes just days out from the Melbourne derby as the Heart prepares to host the Victory in a clash that may determine the fate of both teams.
The timing of van’t Schip’s announcement will likely come under scrutiny from both the media and fans with the Heart looking to gather some momentum in the lead up to the eagerly anticipated finals series.
Van `t Schip was capped 41 times as a player for the Netherlands before stepping into management, becoming an assistant coach at Ajax and the Dutch national team.

It’s a pity the partnership couldn’t have continued, he’s done such a fantastic job with the Heart in such a short space of time.

Some chatter about whether Ante Milicic is ready to step up. Not sure if he is ready, but he has been an important part of the set up and would have learned heaps from van ‘t Schip.

On Fox Sports FC last night they asked John Aloisi if he was interested in taking over if (now confirmed) JVS left
Gold Coast is another club which could do with a change of coach IMO
