It’s the last chance for Adelaide United to make an unlikely run at scraping into the finals as they take on Sydney FC in the last fixture of the round, live from Hindmarsh Stadium. We’ll have live commentary from the kick at 7.00pm AEDT.
Fresh off a 3-0 win over Persipura Jayapura the Reds host a Sydney team that grabbed a vital 2-1 win over Perth last Sunday and, other results permitting, could see themselves in the top six at the end of the week.
Terry McFlynn is available again for the Sky Blues after missing a game through suspension, but given how much better the midfield looked last week it’s unlikely that they would give their skipper an immediate recall (Well, I hope…)
The midweek fixture will buoy Adelaide to try and get a win with John Kosmina facing up against the side that he led for a couple of ill-fated seasons.
Coincidentally, it was also against Sydney FC that Kossie lined up against in the first game of his second spell in the City of Churches, with that result being a 2-2 which if anything, was not indicative of how well they performed that night.
Brett Emerton played arguably his best game in a sky blue jersey last weekend, scoring one and creating the other.
They’ll need more sparkling performances from their classy midfield trio of Emerton, Nicky Carle and Karol Kisel if they’re going to get a result today and progress in the finals should they make it.

Well – after being complete abject for the first half, the Reds were completely dominant in the second, got the equaliser and were it not for Ivan Necevski, could have had four or five goals. A man of the match performance from the man that for so long has been just a backup.
The other story is the wondergoal from young Mitch Mallia. Both he and Chianese grabbed their first goals, and just how important they might prove to be in the scheme of things remains to be seen.

Wow. A long ball found it’s way to the youngster, a beautiful first touch to beat Boogard and then a sublime left footed finish into the far corner. Totally against the run of play!!! And he runs over to the travelling cove for a couple of backflips for good measure

Vidosic squared the ball to Van Dijk a couple of yards out, he was somehow denied by the Sydney keeper and then saw the ball ricochet off the striker’s body onto the inside of the post before Necevski fell gratefully on the ball. So unlucky for the home side.

And that should have been a double!! A sloppy turnover by Sydney, Barbiero found himself steaming towards goal again with 3 red shirts on one defender, but he decided to shoot himself instead of squaring it to the wide open van Dijk and the shot is straight at the keeper. Selfish play there.

Unbelievable. After all the pressure Adelaide have been under, they win a soft corner which Jamison unnecessarily conceded – it was headed towards goal by van Dijk and then poked home from a yard out by Barbiero, who has been awful today.

A pretty dire half of football rescued by a scrappy goal right on the stroke of half time. Adelaide have looked largely disinterested – Sydney have been the better side, but not by a whole lot. A very boring spectacle so far. Hopefully the second half opens up a bit more because there’s not a whole lot going on.
