A shocking brawl involving camera tripods, glass bottles and threats of shooting erupted after British heavyweights Dereck Chisora and David Haye went toe to toe at a press conference.

The ugly scenes occurred in Munich following Vitali Klitschko’s defeat of Chisora. As the boxer spoke to a large crowd of reporters, Haye crashed the media event.

It is another stain on the sport of boxing, especially in Britain.

Even before this incident, neither Chisora and Haye had much integrity after some ordinary recent events.

Haye fought Vitali Klitschko’s brother Wladimir last year in a very disappointing performance, with Haye complaining of a toe injury and running from the Ukrainian all fight. Considering his boasts and antics leading up to the bout, it was a poor showing.

Chisora had also failed to shower himself in a glory when he slapped a stunned Vitali before their WBC heavyweight fight. Chisora at least went the distance with Klitschko, something Haye failed to do.

But both fighters have proved they are somewhat unhinged, coming to blows in a messy stoush that we have surely not heard the end of. It finished with Chisora claiming to all that he would shoot or burn Haye.

Britain has produced a lot of great fighters over the last century or so, but the country’s reputation has copped a fair blow in the wake of this ugly incident.

The heavyweight division, once the most prestigious of all, also receives another healthy knock. Boxing will survive, as it always does, but some severe sanctions against the fighters who are bringing the sport into disrepute would not be remiss.
