Inglis shift an option at Souths

South Sydney coach Michael Maguire is refusing to rule out moving star centre Greg Inglis closer to the action in a bid to get more out of the Rabbitohs backline.

Inglis has suffered from poor service in Souths’ opening two games, his powerful run down the touchline late in Monday night’s loss to Melbourne an all too brief showing of his devastating abilities.

The Rabbitohs left edge – with Inglis sandwiched in between hulking second rower David Taylor and winger Matt King – was seen as a strike weapon before the season, but it appears to have already been abandoned with King playing right centre against the Storm.

Maguire said he was open to the possibility of moving Inglis to five-eighth or even fullback, where he burst onto the scene as a teenager with the Storm.

“Definitely not moving (Inglis) at the moment but where and when he needs to fit in the right places we’ll look those sorts of things,” Maguire said on his arrival back in Sydney on Monday after his side’s second straight loss.

“I’m looking at all sorts of different things with the team at the moment – I’m learning more and more about each player as we play our games.

“Again I learnt last night about the team and looking at opportunities where we may need changes at times and that (moving Inglis) could be possibly one of them.

“We’ve got some structures in place where we can get it to Greg, we’ve just got to make sure we work at it.

“Greg’s showing some good signs when he’s got the ball in the hand – we’ve just got to get it a little bit more for him.”

Maguire said now wasn’t the time to panic, the rookie coach confident the Rabbitohs could turn it around against Penrith this weekend, with Sunday night’s loss following a last minute defeat to Sydney Roosters in round one.

“The results are disappointing, but the way the boys have jumped on board and worked hard at the things we’re trying to do, I can see it coming,” Maguire said.

“We’ve got to do it for an 80 minute period.

“Against the Roosters we had that for 77 minutes and last night we had it for 40-50 minutes.”
