For the last several years, the AFL season has opened with a Thursday night MCG blockbuster between Richmond and Carlton. While the Sydney teams stole the opener in 2012, we see the Thursday night clash again – join us for AFL live scores and blog for Richmond vs Carlton from 7:40pm AEST.

This clash has lost none of its importance for fans and clubs.

It’s been a long wait for success for Richmond. This year marks the 30th anniversary of their last grand final appearance.

Since then, the Tigers have struggled in the lower reaches of the ladder; with just two finals appearances in 29 seasons and a constant turnover of coaches and players.

But finally the Tigers are aiming for stability, with the re-appointment of coach Damian Hardwick to a long-term contract.

Pre-season form has been encouraging for the Tigers. Wins in the NAB Cup against competition powerhouse clubs Hawthorn and Geelong have lifted morale around the club; and at their last start, they enjoyed a good win against the GWS Giants.

Jack Riewoldt is establishing himself as a focal point up forward, while Brett Deledio, Tyrone Vickery and Dustin Martin all look set to take the next step in 2012.

Carlton have bounced back in recent years, making the finals in the last three seasons; and last year enjoyed a thumping win over Essendon, their first finals win since 2001, before a narrow lost to West Coast ended their season. But the pre-season this year has been poor for the Blues, failing to win any of their five games.

The Blues have had several players struggling with injuries during the pre-season; but dual Brownlow Medallist Chris Judd is in good form. Ruckman Matthew Kruezer is back to his best, and midfielder Bryce Gibbs has also enjoyed a promising pre-season.

A massive crowd will be on hand at the MCG for this match; the first game in Melbourne for 2012. The stakes will be high, with both sides keen to kick-start their season with a first-up win.
