After what can only be described as the worst work in the A-League’s history, the focus finally returns to the field this afternoon with Central Coast Mariners and Perth Glory vying for the right to meet Brisbane in next week’s grand final. Join us for live scores and blog from 5.00pm AEST.
After being the best side in the competition for the majority of the home and away season, the Mariners now find themselves in a sudden-death situation this evening.
Lose, and the dream of that elusive A-League Championship fades into the distance for yet another year.
And while the history books certainly favour the side who finishes top two in this fixture, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that the Mariners might not have it all their own way tonight.
Since the turn of the year, Perth have been close to the most consistent team in the competition and following two home wins in the first two weeks of the finals, they travel east bursting with the confidence to win this one.
For his side to win tonight, Graham Arnold must find a way to plug the gap in the middle of the park that has been left since the departure of Rostyn Griffiths to China.
Steven McGarry, Liam Miller and Jacob Burns are experienced, hardened professionals and if they are allowed to dictate terms in the midfield they’ll be difficult to stop.
It’s an evenly-matched contest and for all fans of the A-League and Australian football in general, it would be wonderful to see a great final in front of a solid crowd at Bluetongue.
It’s time for the focus to return to the pitch. It’s sudden death A-League football, and we’ll be covering the match from start to finish with minute by minute observations from 5.00pm AEST. If you’re watching, listening or following along, let us know your thoughts in the space below.

Vukovic should be pleased with the 40,000+ tickets that were sold before the Roar even knew their opponents. Somehow I think much of the crowd will be focused on Burns. Should be a great final! Given the Mariners have struggled with the ACL and A-League commitments this year, I wonder how they’ll go next season, especially I rumors are true an GA heads to Sydney.

FULL TIME: CENTRAL COAST MARINERS 1-1 PERTH GLORY (PERTH GLORY WIN 5-3 ON PENALTIES)
Unbelievable stuff. Great to see the perenially-underachieving Glory into the grand final. Either side could have win, there were chances aplenty. But penalties were needed in the end to decide it, and the Glory were the ones that go through. Commiserations to the Mariners, they have been a great side all year, but that is the way that the cookie crumbles sometimes.
Thanks for following along, and now we begin the countdown to the A-League grand final in eight days’ time!

Central Coast get a free kick outside the area, about 35m out on the left. Hearfield drifts in a cross, but there is no Mariners players anywhere near it and Vukovic collects. Poor option.

Both Vukovic and Ryan has been excellent today. It’s Vukovic’s turn this time, as McBreen’s deflected shot falls to Hearfield, who get a shot that is in turn deflected toward goal. Vukovic does well to adjust, and make a strong catch.

Ibini hits the net! Unfortunately it’s on the wrong side of the post. He gets the ball out wide, beats to defenders and gets onto his left, but his shot hits the side netting. Hearfield and McGlinchey were both in the middle, but the shot was probably the best option.

102′ Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Perth Glory
Perth are able to get forward, and it is Jacob Burns who tries to be the hero and line up a shot from 25m. Not good. He had Scott Neville unmarked to his right, and they could have really put some heat on a tiring Mariners back four.

Not a bad chance there for Ibini. A flick on from McBreen directs the ball past the Glory’s two centre halves to Ibini, who is waiting at the edge of the six yard box, on a wide angle. He tries a glorious volley, gets almost no contact whatsoever.

RYAN! Somehow, Smeltz has been able to drift toward the back post, unmarked, to get on the end of Howarth’s cross. He has an eternity, lines it up and nods into the ground, but Ryan makes himself big and is able to parry the ball away in a manner not dissimiliar to Steve Mandanda against Bayern in the Champions League a couple of weeks back. Ian Ferguson really needs to find something to stop the rot here. They’re sitting deeper and deeper, and the Mariners continue to press. Rogic shows some really nice close control to beat two Glory players on the edge of the area, before Jacob Burns does well to clear the ball out of Rogic’s range.

HALF TIME: Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Perth Glory
Well, an interesting half of football that. Perth started the better, and the home side was getting absolutely nothing in terms of meaningful possession. But as the half went on, the Mariners began to work back into the contest and they ended up going ahead through Kwasnik, after he pounced on some lax Glory defending. But a minute later, Smeltz equalised from what looked another controversial non-call of an offside on Mehmet. The game has since exploded into life, and it is the Mariners who have finished the half stronger.

The Mariners are beginning to win the arm wrestle. Bojic drives in behind Heffernan, whips in a cross which van den Brink has to turn away for a corner.

Central Coast have really been able to get back into the midfield battle and conversely, the Perth defence has dropped off markedly in their press on the player in possession. I think Ian Ferguson would be happy to hear the half-time whistle fairly soon.

Ironic cheers from the Mariners fans as Andrezinho is flagged for offside. The camera plans to Graham Arnold, who from his seated position sarcastically claps, Mourinho-style. Again and again. Well, that’s childish.

The game has really sprung to life in the past five! Rogic busts into space down the right and cuts inside to Kwasnik, who takes a touch and then leans back and lashes a shot toward goal – but it is well, well over the bar.
Previously, Jacob Burns had a shot on goal blocked after the Mariners defence failed to clear the bouncing ball.

Vukovic had a comment through the week about how he felt Bluetongue was the easiest stadium to play due to the crowd being quiet and CCM not having that strong a supporter base. As he is an ex-mariner it cut a lot of the fan base quite a bit, so he copped some flack for it.

Miller picks up the ball in the middle of the park, down the right it comes through Risdon who slides the pass into the area to Mehmet, who is going away from goal and cuts the ball back onto the six-yard box and Smeltz is perfectly in position to slot home.

The corner comes in from Bozanic from the right, it is flicked on from…Sutton and drifts toward the back post, squeezes through Travis Dodd’s legs and sits up perfectly for Adam Kwasnik, who smashes the ball into the roof of the net!

BIG chance for the Mariners! Rose is able to get in behind Risdon and his pass is spot on to find Kwasnik, whose run at the front post sees him get in front of his man. Actually, he has probably just overrun slightly, as he is past the front post, and not able to angle a a shot from inside the six-yard box toward goal.

Two centre halves doing really well for the Mariners. Andrezinho has again found space and had time to look up and whip a ball in at the front post, but Zwaanswijk is positioned well to make the clearance.

Better signs for the Mariners. McGlinchey is able to get free in the middle of the field and get a shot off. It is an awful effort, but the positive is that they are beginning to find passes to cut through the Glory. Good to see.

Good chance for the Mariners! Bojic gets down the right, cuts back into Rogic who gets a shot toward goal, but Pantelidis is there to get a deflection that takes it just away from goal. Still, the Mariners have their first corner of the night. It is cleared easily, but that should give their confidence an injection that they so sorely need.

There has been a number of last-ditch interceptions and challenges for the Mariners in and around their own area. Credit to their defence, which has performed very well in the opening 25 or so minutes, but it is beginning to look a little bit ominous, and if the Glory keep getting easy ball, it might only be a matter of time.

After picking up the yellow, things haven’t yet improved for Rogic. He seems a bit flustered, and has turned the ball over several times now. The Mariners need someone, whether it be Rogic, or Hutchinson, or McGlinchey, to get things under control and get the ball moving in the middle.

Rogic is in the book! After losing the ball to Risdon, he lunges in late to try and stop the Perth fullback from getting forward. It is a claerly frustrated effort and despite what Robbie Slater is saying on Fox Sports, it was worthy of a yellow. Now a long 80 minutes for Rogic to sit on that yellow.

Pretty surprising selections from both sides there in my opinion. Utterly shocking to see Amini not even get stripped, and I’d have though Ibini might have managed a start after the dog’s breakfast that Sutton dished up last weekend.
On the other side, surprised to see McGarry left on the bench again. He’s been close to the Glory’s most vital player over recent months and he changed the game when he came off the bench last weekend.
Really conservative (and puzzling) selections from Arnold and Fergie there.

Yeah it is an interesting one, isn’t it. I’d imagine they would go home, given that the squad would be relatively conditioned to the flight, and they do have an eight-day break. Would be good to get home and soak up some atmosphere among the home supporters as well.
As for the reds? Let’s just hope we get a good flowing contest. The game NEEDS it. (And between you and me, I don’t think you have anything to worry about Roarsome, regardless of what happens this evening).
