AFL panel to review Lake, Goodes

The early season troubles of the Western Bulldogs are likely to worsen on Monday once the AFL match review panel looks at Brian Lake’s striking charge.

Sydney’s two-time Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes is also on report for rough conduct.

Lake was booked for punching young St Kilda defender Tom Simpkin in the face in the last quarter of Saturday night’s 63-point loss at Etihad Stadium.

The punch did not appear as severe as Matthew Scarlett’s blow to Fremantle forward Hayden Ballantyne, which earned the Cats defender a three-week suspension.

But there appears little chance Lake will avoid suspension for the left jab.

Injuries restricted Lake to only three senior games last year but he showed some encouraging signs in Saturday night’s loss.

It will be a major blow for the Bulldogs if they lose Lake for next Sunday’s twilight game against Melbourne at the MCG.

Both sides are winless and the Demons will be determined to show plenty of improvement as they use the match to honour former chairman Jim Stynes, who died last month.

Goodes was also booked on Saturday after he slid into Port Adelaide’s Jacob Surjan with his knees during the match at AAMI Stadium.

The Swans co-captain needs one game to break Michael O’Loughlin’s record of 303 for the most played by a Swan.

But Goodes could be banned for the second time this year – he was suspended for one match in the pre-season cup for a reckless slide into an opponent.
