Galekovic wants to make amends in ACL
Adelaide United captain Eugene Galekovic wants to use Wednesday night’s Asian Champions League clash against Pohang Steelers to make amends for a rare goalkeeping howler.
The Reds host the Koreans at Hindmarsh Stadium with the clubs level on six points at the top of their ACL group.
A win would all but ensure Adelaide advance into the second round, given the other two clubs in Group E – Japan’s Gamba Osaka and Uzbekistan’s Bunyodkor – each has only three points.
“It’s a massive game,” Galekovic said on Tuesday.
“Whoever wins is going to be that one step closer to qualifying.”
Pohang downed Adelaide 1-0 a fortnight ago in South Korea, with an uncharacteristic Galekovic fumble gifting the Steelers the winner.
“It’s time to make amends tomorrow night and I have got a chance to do that,” he said.
Galekovic said the Reds were impressed by the Steelers in their last clash but also learnt valuable information about the K-League powerhouse.
“When they don’t have the ball, they press in the right areas and they press very well as a team,” he said.
“And when they have the ball, it’s very hard to get the ball back off them.
“They’re very good technically and all their players have very good passing ranges.
“They’re a good team – we respect them.
“We know how they might come out and play – but that is the same the other way as well – they know how we play.
“It’s a bit of cat and mouse, but we will be ready for them.”
United lost playmaker Dario Vidosic to a hamstring injury with 21-year-old Evan Kostopoulos to slot into the crucial creative attacking role against the Steelers.
But Galekovic hoped predicted temperatures nearing 30 degrees would favour the home side.
“Obviously they’re coming from temperatures of 10 degrees to 30 degrees, so it’s going to be a big step for them and they might tire a little bit earlier,” he said.
“If they do press, then we know they will run out of steam.
“They have only just started their (domestic) league and, in these conditions, it will be tough on them.”© AAP 2013
