Storm trio ready to take on the world
By Steve Jancetic, 20 Apr 2012
Having first crossed paths on a suburban Brisbane footy ground more than a decade ago, Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk are now set to unleash the NRL’s most devastating combination on the international arena.
The Melbourne trio will line up alongside each other in Friday night’s Test against New Zealand at Eden Park.
It won’t be the first time they have done so in the green and gold, but following Darren Lockyer’s retirement and Cronk’s elevation, it will be the first time they have done so as the undisputed first choice.
And it is a combination that – given the portfolio of performances they have produced in the purple of the Storm – could alter the landscape of international rugby league.
The common consensus is that the Kiwis have been bridging the gap to the Australians in recent years, but as they have done to their NRL rivals, Smith, Cronk and Slater have the potential to take the Kangaroos to a whole new level.
The trio bring to the table an individual skill set amongst the best in the game, but it’s in partnership that their true brilliance comes to the fore.
“It’s a unique bond that we have together. We’ve been around footy teams together for a long time, so we know each other’s game off by heart now,” Smith told AAP.
“We have a bit of an instinct of what each other’s going to do on the field.
“Spending every day together, being under the same coach for our whole career has certainly made our combination a lot stronger.”
That combination first began at Brisbane Norths in 2000, when Cronk and Smith were sent there by the Storm having been signed straight out of school.
“Towards the end of that pre-season, that’s when Bill came down,” Smith recalled.
“He was looking for a club to play for in Brisbane and ended up coming to Norths.
“He played in the last trial of the pre-season and got a start in our under 19s team there – we all played the season there together in 2001 and slowly filtered down to Melbourne.
“I moved down to Melbourne in 2002, Bill came down fulltime the following year and Coops was the year after that and we slowly came into the first grade system together and ever since then we’ve been playing together.
“For us, we’ve spent nearly every day together since 2001.”
Now 11 years on, that same threesome are at the heart of an Australian side with Smith as its leader.
And given what they have done with the Storm this year, there is genuine excitement at what they could do in the green and gold when they have the likes of Greg Inglis, Justin Hodges and Akuila Uate to throw the ball to rather than Matt Duffie, Will Chambers and Justin O’Neill.
But while the supporting cast may have improved, Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens denied it would result in instant success.
“We’ve only got two training sessions to make it happen,” Sheens said.
“Melbourne spend a lot of time getting their game together – they know their game, they know their calls.
“Cooper’s got to share that role with Johnathan (Thurston) now.
“It’s not that easy. People think because they’re in great form it’s just going to click with a national side, but you’re throwing them into a different environment.
“You put the best players together, you put them in an environment where they’re representing their country and things change.”
Even Smith isn’t getting too carried away by the prospect.
“It’s probably really exciting for everyone else to see it, but for us it’s just what we do,” Smith said.
“We’re just doing what we’ve always done since we were 18, back when we were still running around at Brisbane Norths.”

I know this is an AAP story but I’ll leave a comment anyway. “Alter the landscape” of international league? Um… what, from Australia being the best to Australia being the absolute best? Yes, the Kiwis have knocked us over a couple of times in big games but no one is asserting that they’re anywhere close to the Kangaroos on a regular basis- the Anzac Test last year showed that. Let’s not go overboard here. Personally, I hope New Zealand and England continue to improve and start beating Australia regularly. That would be outstanding for the game.

A talented, dynamic and charismatic trio that the game of rugby league may never see the likes of again – AN EXCITEMENT MACHINE – They’re pretty special off the field too … What the NRL missed out on by not using “the three amigos” in the pre-season promotions … GO THE MIGHTY GREEN and GOLD !!!

I see your comments around the inter webs all the time and its awesome to see another passionate member of this Storm family praising or defending our team. Its certainly one thing that us Melbourne Storm fans have over everybody else.
This Storm trio or the big 3 as some might call are all class, always put the team a head of their own success. I just wonder what would be different if they played in NSW together or even the AFL. Its a laugh the NRL hasn’t used these guys in any promotional stuff whatsoever.

Yeah and Channel Nine are gonna let Victorians watch this game at MIDNIGHT.. after three weeks of Friday night on Gem they have already reverted to Not givin’ a toss about us.

Jeff McGinn – what would you do for the next contract if you were advising the Commish – take $800m and all games must be shown live and have control of what games were broadcast, or $1b for the status quo? The TV networks are a business, and do not care about minority sports in other states. Do you think Ch7 would broadcast AFL games in NSW and QLD if they did not have to – they would show the same second rate reality shows, which would rate far better.

Clipper,
If the ARLC were able to actually sell their game to the highest bidder, then I’d agree with your argument, however at the moment they have to (by law) sell 3 games per round, the state of origin and international test matches to one of only three bidders.
I’ve no problem with the social policy directives that see games shown on free to air but if they obtain this benefit from the government / people then the networks are morally obliged to show the game to as wide an audience as possible, instead of the cherry picking that occurs today.
Did the NZRL need to organise kick off last night for 8.15pm local time (which will have affected the gate) or was this time chosen / offered or demanded to provide Australian networks with a compromise deal?

Boomshanka – I’d hardly call 15k in melbourne and 8k in perth as an indication of showing the game to as wide an audience as possible – fans of most other minority sports could also argue that their game should be shown live.

I think you’ll find those numbers you quoted are for the usual 11.45pm coverage into Melbourne / Perth
The GEM feed (on a 1.25hr delay) attracted;
Melbourne 73k
Perth 30k
Adelaide 11k
As a comparison the AFL rated (on 7mate) at the same time into;
Sydney 23k
Brisbane 47k

Accept my apologies – can’t see Adelaide in expansion talk anytime soon! As I’ve said many times, if it wasn’t for the fact that ch7 have to broadcast the AFL games, then they wouldn’t, as the figures are just as woeful as the RL ones, even though this RL one was an ‘international’

No worries. I too have made similar mistakes when comparing the two top codes in Australia. I think we’ll agree that getting hard accurate data is nigh on impossible.
I take your point re international, however rugby league has only just started to appear on our screens down here so will take time to grow (as recognised similarly with the AFL into Sydney).
What gutted me over many years was the hoarding carried out by Channel Nine in non-traditional heartland states, whilst they openly courted the AFL with the promise of nationwide coverage.
They have said that this has only been possible recently, yet they were dicing the rugby world cup up in a similar manner in August last year.
As I say above, the networks are morally obligated to show, or at least on sell, the games nationally (both AFL and NRL) as they obtain an advantage through dodgy legislation.

My apologies to h 9. I failed to spot it on Gem. blind old bugger!. Thanks Bill and Blazza
To Clipper I say that, ” If any channel wants the rights to our game then a clause should be in the agreement that a minimum 1hr delay is allowable”.. I don’t blame the channels maybe there ARE ‘mindless millions’ out there that like watching the 27th rerun of 2 1/2 men or worse still ” Farmer wants a Wife” .. maybe I should be more forgiving and pray for those unfortunate souls. But, it gives me lots more satisfaction to carry on hating Nine for some of the 10 yrs of attitudal remarks I have received from their ‘front desk folks’
I am now looking forward to a pleasant Friday Night watching the game I love and hoping it will be a good close game…
Perhaps/Maybe the ‘mindless ones’ who have sacrificed their ‘Rotting reruns on Gem’ will say a prayer for me for my uncultured likes and lifestyle! LOL.

There are some comments here that are worthy of a little further exploration and that is of course to use this trio to their full commercial potential inject them into the front line of the promotion and further expansion of Rugby League.
I am of course talking about returning them to their home club of The North Brisbane Bombers (Melbourne have a great U20 side, a team in the NSWRL and the backing of NEWS they can look after themselves they are big boys now, time to take the floaty’s off). By allowing this natural progression to take place the NRL could see the birth of a club that is not only viable but a positive boom for the game. Brisbane already get about 30,000 per game, if you were to add the talent of these 3 into the mix and face them off against the, what can only be described as emerged young talent of the Bronco’s it would make for a great game of passionate Rugby League.
With the Bronco’s dominance it almost seems that QLD misses out on the local traditional rivalry scene that inspires Sydney’s passionate rivalries (Tiger/Souths 1909 grand final, you hold that grudge tigers it is part of the game). With these 3 at the helm of a rival Brisbane North Bombers rival team it almost sparks controversy, passion but, best of all amazingly talented rugby league that would be a spectacle for all to see, and in reality all would go and see it.
With the crowds they get for the Bronco’s now this could only lead to a further mass expansion and popularity of the game in Bribane. You add talent to a town like Brisbane where the thirst for rugby league is strong and the appreciation of talent even stronger then you will see home games in Brisbane with crowds that VFL fans would be jealous of as Brisbane locals try to remember if there was a local team called the the lions or was that the VFL cub that moved here for a while.
This is an idea people this has legs you are correct, the NRL has to use this excitement machine to their advantage. These 3 could give a long deserved club their boost into the NRL the way they did for Melbourne and what better way to do it than using the EXICITMENT MACHINE.

The best combo since the Saints days of Langlands,Smith and Raper.
The Storm trio bring uncertainty, excitement and sheer class to a contest. No wonder the team rates its …off,in the northern states.
These players have the intuitive knack of,reading the other twos’ minds in attack. It’s as if they were united at birth.
These guys should be used in NRL promos, not some band, that in the views of many is past its use by date.Gee the code would be better off using the MC Hammer’s song”Can’t touch this” showing Slater and Cronk in full flight.
They exude the quality us Frenchies describe as : “je ne sais quoi”.

The big 3 are potentially the biggest 3 player combination in league history.
They deserve to and will most likely – win multiple premierships together before the end of their careers.
If scum the likes of Manly can win two from the last four whilst being completely despised I’m sure the Storm will eventually get proper rewards for their amazing team performances since 2006.
