Australian cycling star Matt Goss won the sprinter’s jersey at the Tour of Turkey despite crashing inside the last 3km of the eighth and final stage, as Bulgarian Ivalio Gabrovski won the overall classification.

The crash took out a number of top sprinters including GreenEdge’s Goss and compatriot and teammate Robbie McEwen with the incident upsetting a number of sprint trains which allowed Andre Greipel to lead into the final kilometre before Theo Bos opened up the sprint and was able to hang on for the stage win.

Rabobank’s Bos, who was perfectly led out by his Australian teammate Mark Renshaw, held off Andrew Feen and Stefan van Dijk in the race home.

Goss wasn’t happy with the way his race ended but was pleased he came through the incident relatively unscathed.

“It’s like I said at the Tour Down Under, some riders seem to close their eyes and go for sprints with no respect for the others,” he said.

“That crash had nothing to do with me. But it’s part of racing, I guess … this is not the way I wanted to finish. I wanted to go home on a good note.

“Since Mark Renshaw led out instead of sprinting for himself, I keep the green jersey, I’m happy with that. Fortunately, I’m not injured by the crash and I can go to the Giro next week.”

GreenEdge’s sports director Neil Stephens said there was some concern Goss was going to lose his lead in the sprint competition to Renshaw, who finished second in the race for the green jersey.

“He (Renshaw) was a real threat to Matt’s points jersey. When results posted, we saw Mark was outside the top-15. Matt was able to conserve the points jersey after all,” Stephens said.
