Smith upset over NRL time-wasting

Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith has blasted time-wasting late in matches as an “ugly” aspect of the NRL that needs cleaning up.
Smith was speaking after a spirited Roosters fightback fell short as the Warriors held on to win 30-26 in Auckland on Saturday night.
An Anthony Minichiello try with three minutes helped to close the gap to within a converted try, setting up a grandstand finish.
However, Smith was upset Minichiello was later not allow to play the ball after being dazed in a tackle and also over the time taken to set a scrum that ended with the Roosters being penalised.
While “angry” and “frustrated”, he was also proud of the resilience his players showed in fighting back after some “diabolical decisions” during the match.
He said there were “too many disappointing calls to mention”, but added that the way the game ran was encapsulated in the last two minutes.
“In the end, they did not even know that you should blow the whistle when the hooter goes,” he said of referees Steve Lyons and Henry Perenara.
Smith pointed to 15 seconds he counted as lost in setting the scrum, saying most referees would wait to call time-on until the ball was put in.
“There’s a whole untidiness about our game at the moment where teams are doing this sort of thing and lying down and not playing the ball and chewing the clock up,” he said.
“We would probably do the same thing, by the way. The encouragement is there with the way the refs are interpreting all that, instead of taking a strong stand about that and working it out.
“It was just ugly for the game. I’m not talking about us losing because of that. It’s not the way we want.
“The rugby union World Cup final finishes with it seems like half an hour of guys just diving at the ground and chewing up the clock.
“It was an obscene sort of way for the climax of a tournament to finish, an extravaganza like that was, and our game has got that a little bit in it as well at the moment. I wish we could fix that.”
Skipper Braith Anasta agreed there were “too many disappointing calls”.
He pointed to bench forward Boyd Cordner being put on a report after his shoulder was judged to have made contact with the head of Warriors fullback Jerome Ropati late in the first half.
Ropati went off with a dislocated knee suffered in the tackle and faces six to eight weeks on the sidelines.
Anasta said Cordner’s shoulder was “nowhere near the head”.
“He didn’t get carried off because he was concussed,” Anasta said.
“He got carried off because of his knee.”
Warriors coach Brian McClennan admitted there were aspects of the game “that had me scratching my head”.
But he said he didn’t want to say anything about the refereeing until he had seen the tape of the match.

Brian Smith is a goose. Decent rugby league people should denounce this code hating fool. When was the last time a rugby coach said such insulting things about league? I am appalled.

Brian Smith does have a valid point though. The last 3-4 minutes of the rugby wc final were spent winding down the clock. Being a wc final ever team would have done the same thing but you do not want this happening in every close game. The titans tried to do it last week against the tigers and it came back and bit them in the backside. It is a very dangerous ploy and already we have seeb so many games this season where teams have snatched the most unlikely of wins.

I seem to remember the world cup final differently the french were on attack for the last 20 minutes, while being 1 point behind they had most of the ball the All Blacks managed to get the ball back in the last 4 minutes and saw out the clock.

Absolutely love it. The Warriors have been on the wrong side of terrible calls from the day they entered the competition, only in the past few years have they started getting an even share of fortune and it is showing with the success they are having. We lived with this crap for over 10 years, suck it up and get on with it.

Horrible refereeing last night. Devalued a great game for mine. I also have to wonder why an Auckland born NZ rep was allowrd to referee this game? Perenara made some absolute shocking calls.

So your saying like 99% of the other games the Warriors have played, an Australian born ref should have done the job? It’s no wonder Australia has had such a great success rate over the years, as soon as someone else gets a tiny taste of the advantage they have held in the sport they feel hard-done by. Wow absolutely wow, just imagine what the Kiwi team could do if they held an even amount of test matches in New Zealand. But i doubt that will ever happen because that would just be too unfair to Australians.

I’m saying that Perenara should not have been allowed to referee a game involving his “bros”.
Seriously he was horrible and the only reasonable explanation (because I think he is a good ref) was that he was either biased or intimidated by the crowd and the Warriors. So unless he can referee the game fairly, which I think would be very difficult for him to do, a neutral ref should be brought in – Australian or not. That being said Steve Lyons had a stinker as well.

Last nights game had some of the worst ref decisions I have ever seen in a rugby league game. The roosters should put in an official complaint to the NRL. Those officials should be stood down immediately it was that bad.

The calls were not that bad. The last scrum should have been a penalty to the warriors anyhow, Mini played the ball sideways.
Mark that in your calender. Warriors Roosters games, how good was that, like a origin game.
That Young Johnson is something special, no wonder Joey Johns gets excited helping him along. Game of the season, or close.
The roosters seem to be in alot of close good games this year.
I think the bar is starting to rise in league. The intensity is rising, the passion is rising, happy days.

I was totally neutral in watching this games, I thought some of the calls were unwarranted, but Roosters got more than a little help through the refs calls. Smith is the ultimate whinger!.
Perenara is about the best and fairest ref on the circuit. Most of the criticism is just sour grapes by The losers!..

Time wasting near a games completion has been happening since day dot.
It’s like a horse who is winning by ten lengths when his jockey eases the pace close to the finish line.
The hard work’s been done – give the beast a rest – No pun intended Manu !
The practice also reduces the risk of injury late in a game.
The trick is not to give your opponents too much of a head start – then you’ll have nothing to moan about.
Cracking game by the way !

Im a Roosters Fan and i cant blame the refs, I nearly fell of lounge when Pearce threw that stupid flick pass. We would have locked the game up then and there if would have just played the ball quickly.
