Sydney FC veterans not worried by youngsters
Related coverage
Sydney FC skipper Terry McFlynn says he and fellow Sky Blue veterans aren’t threatened by the possibility of young new players coming into the A-League team next season.
Ian Crook was on Monday appointed as the Sky Blues’ new head coach and his promotion from the youth team might also signal the elevation of some youngsters into the senior team.
With the coaching role filled, the club will shift its focus on recruiting new players, with Crook saying the process will begin this week.
But 31-year-old McFlynn insists the veterans in the squad aren’t concerned.
“No (we’re not threatened) not at all – that’s progression,” he said.
“We’ve got a hell of a lot of good players already at this club and we’ve got maybe five or six of them who will make that step up (from the youth side).
“And maybe three or four fresh faces will come into the first team too, and that’s exciting… that’s the future of the club.”
Joel Chianese, who was last season promoted from the youth team in April to make his debut in the senior side, said Crook’s appointment had given other youngsters hope they might also get their time in the sun.
“It’s (Crook’s appointment) really exciting for the younger players. They’re probably thinking maybe they will get more of an opportunity,” the 22-year-old said.
“But at the end of the day, he’s got to get results because it’s his job on the line as well.”

One or two young ex GCU players I hope will find their way to SFC.. Gol Gol, and Zac Anderson. The first a promising Striker with pace and magic close ball control. The second a promising Central Defender, big and strong in the air—learning very fast how to play-out from the back..

Anderson went to the CCM.
Jamo, Cole and Beauchamp all released by Sydney.

Sorry to hear we missed out on Zac. I thought he would be a good young pick up for SFC (not quite ready) but one for future representative football. CCM will destroy his natural talent and be turned him into a thug… pity

australia’s finest maltese international? the mans marked the best in europe, gone to HAl finals on numerous occasions and….
yeah
fair enough
still CCM do develop good talents (or nick them from Blacktown) and have a good pathway set up. Young players could do a lot worse than go to learn under Arnold (Hi I’m Arnold, your instructor…more energy).

I guess he has citizenship then, so not a bad pickup, though with Mallia, Petratos, Chianese, Bridge and a new striker at Sydney I don’t think he is necessary for us.

Cole came out of obscurity one game, was an overnight sensation, even touted as NT material, then started the long road back to obscurity – an interesting case study – but there’s not doubting that when he burst on to the scene he displayed some genuine talent.

He is pretty inconsistent, at times makes Ronaldo look pedestrian but generally spends most of his time mis-hitting passses, shanking crosses and defending poorly.
He is a versatile player though and makes a pretty good squad player.
It will be very interesting to see who they bring in, on the face of it I am not opposed to letting all three of them go, so long as they improve the squad.

Hope so as well – often a player that has been a bit stale in one place benefits from a change in scenery. Fergie, despite his many other drawbacks, seems to be a good man manager, gets his player’s hungry and passionate.
Thwaite, well, our backline will feature Bas van den Brink (personally, I think he’s the A-League’s best centre-half atm), Thwaite and Pantelidis (I know many thought he was a hack but his work last year was absolutely sterling) in the centre.
That is a very, very strong setup, particularly with Vukovic as keeper and Risdon advancing in leaps and bounds since his youth team promotion. Heffenan concerns me though.

Nice to see decent youth prospects popping up around the joint.
At Glory Risdon was an absolute gem and revelation last year for us, bar a few youthful stuff-ups.
Very excited about seeing more of Makarounas, Makeche and Brandon O’Neil next year, all of which looks like it will be on the cards. I’m as surprised as the next bloke but the early indications are that Fergie actually is going ahead with a much younger focus and potentially some attractive play.

Yes, Jamieson is another that followed Cole’s route (see above), touted as NT material, then gradually slid back into obscurity.
Thwaitey has proven himself to be more than a handy A-League defender, despite a poor first season with the Victory.

there have sadly been a few touted “next best” who haven’t materialised – a look at the soccerroo selection confirms that many next best things are over hyped or undercooked at time of printing praises – and I have to agree with you on SFC’s cole and Jamieson (along with others already named). I hope Crook can develop and identify the talents.
..
With GCU all bit picked clean wheres the new talent – returning from overseas perhaps?

the thing is that both Cole and Jamo really did show something for a short while, the latter showed a bit more with Adelaide, Cole was sort of mecurial, occasionally pulling out something special out of his bottom, but there was genuine hope that they’d both keep improving and take their game to the next level. For whatever reason, don’t know why, but it just didn’t happen.

tbh not many shone under VL – petratos, chianese and antonis (particularly the latter 2) stand out, with a few limited games, but when the team was inherited from Kosmina there seemed to be half a dozen hopefuls and i cant think of one that has shone since. Even the marquees have been a bit flat. Whether its the sydney’s press propensity for puffery when it comes to SFC or its just been a bit of bad luck all round (or both i suspect) who knows but SFC, once again, start again with a new coach, a new direction and hopefully a more dynamic roster.
…
Cole did have some good free kicks to begin with, at a time when Hernandez was the only other one able to do them…. a good squad player he will do well to get a gig at WS or another club. Sometimes players need a new club to kickstart their talents – Henry at Arsenal for example (now that wld be a something miraculous if Cole pulled that kind of surprise out of his bottom)

Interestingly, Carlos might have been the best at free kicks, but he too would go through patches where he was hitting them all over the shop, and then he’d find it again…

LV’s system wasn’t really very wing back friendly because he would push a midfielder (with little pace) in front of them.
Both have been poor int heir own right but would look a bit better in a different system.
