French Open surprise packet: Christina Mchale
Who better to pick as my French Open surprise packet for the Women’s draw than 19 year old American sensation, Christina Mchale.
One of the rising stars of the women’s game, Christina rose from a lowly 2010 year-end ranking of 115 to finish 2011 with a then career high ranking of 42. During a stellar 2011 she defeated a former champion at Roland Garros, Italian, Francesca Schiavone.
Her 2011 victories also included wins against former World number 1 Caroline Wozniacki as well as 2007 Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli.
Christina has continued gaining worldwide respect in 2012 which has so far included a third round appearance at the Australian Open which is highlighted by a straight sets demolition of 12th seed Lucie Safarova.
As well as that, one of her career best wins was when she defeated last year’s Wimbledon champion and current World number 3 Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic at Indian Wells.
Heading into Roland Garros Mchale has improved her ranking to 36, which if she improves a touch more will give her the undoubted advantage of being seeded at the prestigious event.
Christina is certainly one of the form players of the WTA tour and with her confidence growing by the day she could run deep in Paris and surprise many.
