Any aspirations of finals rugby might be gone, but the much-maligned Waratahs still have plenty to play for when they begin their South African tour against the Stormers tonight. We’ll have live scores from 3.10am AEST.
Rugby can be a cruel game at times, and the Waratahs certainly found that out last week.
With only minutes left on the clock, Michael Foley’s men looked set to register a well-deserved victory in front of their home crowd agains the Bulls.
That was, until Werner Kruger was shunted over the line for the visitors, ending any chances the Waratahs had of a late-season surge into the finals.
Thankfully they travel to Cape Town with no fresh injuries, and the tour represents an opportunity for the Waratahs to start again and build toward a more successful 2013 campaign.
But it won’t come easy tonight when they face up against the Stormers, who come into this one on a three-match winning run.
Granted, they might not be lighting up the scoreboard like the Bulls are but they’re continuing to get the job done despite having one of the longest injury lists in the competition.
Form wouldn’t suggest it but the Waratahs have a genuine chance of winning this game – if they approach it with the right attitude.
Should they be freed from the negative, unimaginative tactics that have plagued them throughout the year now that the pressure is off, we could see a different side.
Can they do it? Find out from 3.10am AEST as we cover live scores from Cape Town and if you happen to be following, give us your thoughts in the space below.

I check the ROAR website to see how the Tahs get on every week as I can’t bring myself to watch the game.
I guess soon i’ll stop checking the roar and my break from the Tahs will be complete.
Sam Allardyce the West Ham coach took the hammers up to the premier league with a championship playoff win over Blackpool at Wembley yesterday.
He was interviewed after the match and the first thing he said was that when he took over as manager last year it was of a club that had “lost it’s soul”.
“The club got relegated and it was not very nice, the doom and gloom that was around the place was something that you could smell, taste and feel as a manager.
“It was something that I had to rip the backside out of and start again, which I did as quick as I could.”
The backside of the Tahs needs to be ripped out starting with the guys at the top. But hey, EVERYONE has been saying that for years, it aint news. Even the guys at the top of the Tahs would realise that by now.

What a painful game of rugby.
Foley told us all his team were going to kick and that is pretty much all his side did all day. Barnes, McKibbin and Foley – followed their coach’s instructions and kicked almost every single piece of possession they had away. This was coupled with a decision to under commit to the breakdown and back their defence.
What worries me is it almost worked and I am fearful that the side will continue to play this way. Had it not been for a Kepu knock on in the 59th minute the Tahs may have snatched the game.
On the good news front the Tahs scrum continued to sweep all before it, a sensational tighthead capped an excellent performance in this area. Tilse is still moving his left foot pre-engagement but even with this flaw in his technique he was still able to bring the left side of the scrum up strongly. If he fixes that movement he will be even stronger.
Robinson, Douglas and Dennis had strong games but too many of their team mates were weak – particularly Mumm and Elsom. Timani had started ok but went off injured in the 22nd minute with a hurt shoulder before we could see if he could get into the game further.
Elsom managed to piss off Joubert. Joubert correctly penalised Elsom for tackling Habana without the ball – Elsom went on to aggressively question the decision and then copped an incorrect offside call and incorrect knock on against himself, it was hard to think he hadn’t brought this on himself.
Mumm continued giving away stupid penalties as he has all year. Looked like he was trying to get a full set managing to get pinged for round the side of a ruck, round the side of a maul, not rolling away and collapsing a maul.
The Tahs really only mounted three serious attacking raids in the entire match, the first came in the 25th minute, the second in the 42nd minute and the last effort in the 59th minute. There was promise in all of these attacks but the insistence on kicking the ball meant they didn’t try to put the Stormers under enough pressure. Most infuriating was that with the team down by six and with ten to play they continued to kick.
The other stand out issue for the Tahs was that they failed to counter the Stormers driving maul. The team has the size and power as evidenced by their scrum, they need to spend more time at training working on their own mauling and counter to fix what is an area that should not be a weakness.
Final little gripe – what was with the second ball on the field just prior to Liebenberg’s try? It distracted four Waratahs in the lead up to that score.

The ref should have stopped the play when the second ball appeared.

I’ve worked out why Barnes always has a pained look on his face while he is playing – he has a sore foot from kicking all day. I hope that he McKibbin and Foley went and stuck their feet in ice after the game – all that kicking has probably bruised their toes.

Is it just me or do others feel that the Waratah coaching staff have no idea of how to win a game?
Kick, kick, kick and kick some more. It’s not like we are good at it or have brilliant chasers. The Stormers are just so much better at the kick game and collecting the high ball that it makes us look like we’re bringing a knife to a gun fight.

Just watched this game. If every game of rugby was like that, I’d have stopped watching years ago. Does that make me a bad fan? A poor supporter? I couldn’t give a stuff.
SO much kicking from both teams. The sad thing is that the Tahs will feel it almost worked – they almost beat one of the leading SA teams at home! – and so they will ‘stick with their game plan’ next game. And the next game. And the next…
When will the lords of rugby save us from this torment?!?

Barnes must have been playing/kicking to a plan.
But what was the plan?
This was the proverbial game of two halves and the Waratahs could have won. But they didn’t.

AD, it was pretty clear that the plan was to hoof the pill all day. Was horrible but the chase was better than it has been all year. Now that even they have to admit they are out of the finals race hopefully they will start playing some rugby.

I’ve just noticed that six hous after the Tahs loss and the Number of posts hasn’t even reached double figures.
It seems that not even the passionate are interested anymore. Or maybe heads have been bled dry on the brick wall that is Tahs executive.
Tahs need to be playing in a paddock out west somewhere where fans are passionate and less comfortable.
I don’t blame the players, though they are the expression of this bankrupt rugby culture.

Gents if you watched the match, the Tahs had bugger all possession yet Barnes kicked 21 times! What was the flow of the match and was the kicking aimless?
3:24pm
jeznez said | 3:24pm | Report comment
The Tahs had bugger all possession because they kicked it every time they got the ball, not sure what the final kick count was but there must have been a further ten or so each from McKibbin and Foley to go with those twenty from Barnes.
The kicking was actually better executed than many of the games – just so much of it though. If I wasn’t a fan I would have switched off.
Painful.

If the Rebels beat the Force this arvo they will be in third spot in the Aus conference. How many more lessons do the NSWRU have to attend before they realise they are utterly ineffectual and are damaging Rugby. It is not the players, it is the sorrounding culture, the lack of meaningful incentives that ‘Tah fans should be most incensed about.

Tahs had their chances but all too familiar, choked* when they needed to close the deal/get their noses in front and stay there.
Ot to put it another way, another gallant loss where they were competitive.
Attention selectors – can we have the absolute minimum of these losers in Wallaby jerseys please. Kepu at tighthead, Robinson at loosehead, TPN if he’s fit – only ones that deserve consideration though at the moment Alexander ahead of Robinson, Palmer and Slipper ahead of Kepu and Moore and even S. Faingaa ahead of TPN.
Forget anyone from 4 to 15. AAC perhaps in the 22 because of his versatility, and he seems reasonably robust
*Watch Kepu butcher a try in about the 65th minute. Another classic “if only’ Tahs moment.

I think AAC should be left out. McCabe can cover the same positions as AAC (wing, centres and fullbacks) and has a better attitude at present. AAC has been very laboured in the past three Super Rugby seasons. I know playing in losing sides over the past two years hasn’t helped but he has to get on with it to justify his test selections.

Righto, I was trying to be charitable. No problems with a Tah free zone in gold this year, though no doubt the SMH and the Sydney gang will soon be trumpeting someone for the Walls after they play well in Sydney Uni v Easts or some such club game.

Dead Right! The usual cheerleaders Growden and Kearns will be pushing Palu’s case as well. The guy has been a predictable plodder for the past three seasons, on the few occassions he hasn’t been injured.

Really disappointing game. Barnes looked to kick every time he got the ball, even when he was 35m from the try line and got the ball on the 10m wide blindside his first move was a shape to kick and then he realised he had to run but by then he’d already slowed and balanced to kick making his run very ineffective.
I’d rather see Cooper with 2 games at flyhalf for the Wallabies, or Beale, or even Holmes off the back of one match against the Hurricanes rather than Barnes.

So true RK!! The SA commentators summed it up when they said Barnes was ‘kicking his backs into submission’. He surely can’t be wallabies n10 in 3 weeks time.

Joubert is a very observant referee. It was a shame that he was only refereeing one team
The tahs need much more than fair refereeing though.
The Stormers were there for the taking. They will be exposed at the business end.
Some good tactics by Tahs. Poor execution and lack of pride in jersey leading to poor attitude when Joubert lent on his eye patch.
Regarding the Tahs. Root and branch overhaul, as discussed in 50,000 posts in 2011.
