The New Zealand Super Rugby conference leaders the Chiefs play the fourth-placed Bulls this evening at Waikato Stadium, with the match kicking off at 5:35pm (AEST). We’ll have live scores of what shapes to be one of the matches of the season.
The replay of the 2009 final bodes as a big one. In the ’09 final, the Bulls obliterated the Chiefs 61-17 , but it’ll be a lot tighter tonight.
The Bulls are just two points off the lead in the South African conference, and have showed their mettle on this away tour, but have just six days to recover from a physical game against the Highlanders.
Aside from losing Richie Kahui, the Chiefs look in good order, after being brought down to earth by the Reds. They are coming off the bye and will be looking to stretch their lead over the Crusaders in the NZ conference.
Skipper Craig Clarke says the bye came at the right time.
“We needed that after seven games on the trot,” Clarke said.
“We had a lot of rugby and pretty intense rugby at that. It’s good to have the time off and get refreshed mentally and physically.”
Chiefs prop Ben Afeaki will make his comeback against the Bulls after three months out with a broken right arm.
If the Chiefs can adequately cover for the loss of Kahui with replacement Jackson Willison they should win this comfortably. The Bulls looked like a side struggling from a tough road trip last week – this could be the deciding factor as the Chiefs try to run their travel weary legs ragged.
Smart money says Chiefs on this one, but it’ll be keenly fought contest. Leave comments below if you’re watching.

Little wonder the Bulls rarely threatened. They hold the ball at each ruck for an eternity. They had no attack outside their superb mauling game. Lawrence allowed the Chiefs to continually comein from the side to stop it. Ihave not seen a pack so slow to a ball carrier as the bulls were tonight.
Neither side will win with that standard.

I think it was a game plan. Might see a more expansive game from them next week against the Stormers. Even though the Chiefs held their own at scrum time the Bulls rolling maul was super impressive. Think they made something like 80 metre that game from rolling mauls alone.

Neither side will win with that standard? Really? Considering these two teams are at the top of the table i think you may have no idea what you are talking about.

Their positions on the table are not relevant to the match last night. Did you see how long each ruck was for the Bulls (time-wise)? Not exactly difficult to defend against that when you have 30secs to set your line after each ruck and they then telegraph where they are going next.
So you can kid yourself that it was a top drawer match if you like. Ive seen both teams play infinitely better than that this year. Thats my point champ…

There was some Wayne Smith back line master tactics in there during the second half…and set up and executed by Cruden and Sonny Bill….I thought Horrell had a blinder and the Bulls tired a little in the second half. Kirchner was everywhere.
The Bulls looked like they were going to run all over the Chiefs forwards in the first half but good subs by the Chiefs in the second stanza….

Ma’a Who? Piri What? All those Chiefs named in the All Black squad proved why tonight. Brilliant game of rugby from both teams.

Hope the Bulls have a safe trip home and belt the Stormers next week at Loftus

Bit of SBW magic this half 28-22 with 10 to go

That whole play running it from their own 22 was sublime. Every other team in the tournament would be worried seeing that sort of precision.

Mark Lawrence has been a perfect example tonight of why neutral referees should be used for these games.

I thought he was actually alright, I like how talks to the players in a civil manner and not the headmaster like fashion of some refs.

These guys usually turn it on. Average 7 tries per encounter and 62 points. Hope its that tonight. 62-0 to Waikato that is LOL!

With 49 and 47 points respectively, the Chiefs and Bulls are pretty sure to make the finals as they have an 8pts cushion over n7 (Highlanders). For oz rugby, I guess a chiefs win with no point whatsoever for the Bulls would be better but again the Reds being 11pts behind the Bulls at the mo, they’re probably more likely to catch the Crusaders or Sharks should they lose most of their remaining games.

Yes this should be a cracker. Although I don’t really care who wins, it’s always fun to watch the Chiefs and SBW…

it will be interesting to see how willison teams up with sbw on attack and more importantly on defense.
