Essendon will be keen to extend their run of form against an underperforming Melbourne. We’ll have live scores from 7.40pm AEST.
Luke Darcy has said that the Bombers can win the flag on the back of what they’ve shown so far this season, such is the hype surrounding them right now.
Last week, as expected, they accounted for the GWS Giants, winning by 66 points.
David Zaharakis had 32 touches and a goal, while Tom Bellchambers and Patrick Ryder were both multiple goal kickers who had a fair share of the hitouts.
The Bombers now sit in second place on the ladder, being one of only two teams – West Coast the other – to have eight wins and a loss to their name.
The Demons are most definitely at the other end of the hype scale right now, with everyone seemingly lining up to pot them.
Last week, as expected, they went down to Carlton, trailing by 58 points at the final siren.
The concern for Mark Neeld would be that they only registered one goal in the entire second half. Mitch Clark had three goals for the match, while Nathan Jones was the best ball winner with 27 disposals.
Melbourne are last on the ladder and are yet to win a game. Their percentage is 51.
Dustin Fletcher, Leroy Jetta and Kyle Hardingham are back for Essendon. Out of the side are Mark McVeigh, Henry Slattery and Tayte Pears.
Melbourne have brought in Colin Sylvia and Joel Macdonald for Jamie Bennell and James Sellar.

What disappointed me more than anything was what appeared to be an attitude of ‘this is a terrible team we are playing, we’ll end up beating them…’ throughout the first 3/4. By the time the intensity required was found Melbourne had gained the scent of victory which was too much to overcome by a less than committed Bombers outfit.
What scares me is that this same attitude was apparent against Gold Coast and it wasn’t sorted for last night’s match.
To be top 4 a team must put away bottom 8 sides. Essendon has struggled to do this against each inferior opponent this season.
The ramifications of such a loss is the potential to miss a home final or 2. Based on how the Bombers performed in the conditions, you wouldn’t back them against say Sydney or Adelaide on a rainy day.

Let’s just hope the Bombers secure a home final at Etihad cause I’m not sure I could handle them chancing wet conditions ever again

Great win Dees!!
We haven’t seen too many bottom teams upset top teams the past five years – so this is fantastic for the comp in what already has been a great season.

You little ripper! What a sensational performance by Melbourne! If ever a group of fans deserved a win like this, it’s the Melbourne fans.
