Oldfield hat-trick seals NRL win for Manly

A hat-trick of tries from young winger Michael Oldfield sealed a 20-8 NRL win for Manly over St George Illawarra in an entertaining clash at Brookvale Oval on Friday night.
The win ended a run of four successive defeats at the hands of the Dragons for the premiers, who were in full control for most of the game, but allowed the joint venture to close the gap to two points in the second half before icing the result in the last five minutes.
The Dragons took the lead after seven minutes when Jamie Soward opted to take two points by converting a penalty in front of the posts.
That early setback boosted the home side, who stepped up their attack with three successive sets before Oldfield went over in the 18th minute.
The hosts failed to add to the tally in the first half despite dominating possession and went to halftime with a narrow 6-2 advantage.
However, they punished the Dragons immediately after the restart when Ben Creagh was penalised for not releasing Matt Ballin in the tackle.
A wonderful break from Glenn Stewart fooled the visitors, and his pass to Jamie Lyon was fed to Oldfield who had the simple task of diving over the line.
The Dragons’ attack had been too predictable to cause the Sea Eagles any real problems, but they had immediate success when they opted to run the ball up the middle.
Brett Morris embarked on a 60-metre run and two tackles later, winger Daniel Vidot powered over to score, with Soward adding the extras to cut the hosts’ lead to 10-8.
The Dragons then enjoyed a stiff spell of pressure but could not find their way over for a second try.
Oldfield made it tough for the Dragons when he crossed with five minutes to go after a classy angled run from Brett Stewart, and Darcy Lussick added some gloss to the scoreline with a four-pointer just before the siren.
Manly coach Geoff Toovey said his patched-up side would relish next week’s bye with Jason King missing the game due to illness and Foran struggling to finish the game with a sore ankle.
“For us the bye has come at a great time, as long as we can maintain that momentum after the break we will be in good stead,” Toovey said.
Toovey also said he was unsure if NSW utility Jamie Buhrer’s back injury was serious after he went off in the second half.
“We will find out how bad it is tomorrow,” he said.
Dragons mentor Steve Price was full of praise for his side’s spirit and defence but admitted improvement was needed in attack.
“I am very proud of the guys’ effort and the way they had a dig,” Price said.
“Our defence was outstanding in the first half, but we need to work on our execution. But we’ll fix it.”

Manly continues to pip other teame trhough a good defensive effort. But their attack remains stilted relying on a couple of individual efforts to create the opportunites. Against Melbournbe they will struggle because that team on average will score at least 20-25 points, something which Manly has found difficult to equal all season
Noticed another of Manly’s young up and comers made an impressive return to first grade in Michael Oldfield, with a hat trick of tries, only to then learn Melbourne are courting him for next season. Tough holding onto your youngsters when your older players form the basis of a premiership squad. There are five major Manly players remaining unsigned and each getting good offers from other teams ..Oldfield (Melbourne), Tony Williams (Canterbury), Lussick (Parramatta), Ballin (Nth Qld, Canberra) and Wolfman (Parramatta).. I suspect Manly will only be able to hold two or three. Such is the workings of the salary cap…..no complaints about equalising the comp. Needs to happen to retain a good competition. But for the individual supporter it can be World shattering…at least untl next season

Once again the salary cap is destroying a successful team,,, THIS IS NOT GOOD. Look at the players mentioned, each would ‘walk into’ any team in he league. This madness needs to end..
Since that Horrible Manly v Melbourne Final (Yup I am a Storm supporter), these two teams have LOST about 20 players because of the cap… IS this right and fair?… not in my book!. I want to see Storm play their best seventeen against Manly’s best, not a watered down game because players have been pushed out the door to some money laden club that can’t seem to bring on their own kids!. (and has found methods of payment that I Schubert cannot trace)
Where is the review of ‘the cap’ that was promised after the storm rorting debacle, oops pushed under the carpet like most things that D. Gallop and his co-orts have done.
Geez the too hard basket, must be taking up a lot of room at RL headquarters…

Congrats to Manly, as I have said recently, this team never gives in, that’s why people fear them and despise them.. I can’t wait to see the Storm v Manly game, it is the highlight of our season..

Some sections of the media are saying that Oldfield playing on the wing and outside brilliant players such as Foran, Lyons and the Stewart brothers are making him look better then he is, CRAP.
Oldfield has proven himself many times as a flyer and one that can create and finish off tries no matter who is playing alongside and now that he scored a hatrick the other night that alot of clubs are after him, this is not good reading for a young bloke it gives them false confidents and in the end he will lose out.
Some bloggers here are also naming players who are off contract soon and other clubs are gunning for their services, this may be so and it may not be so, just let the year play out and we will see who goes where and who stays.
Dont write the Eagles off if they do lose some play makers for next season, they have a strong list of young players to fill their boots and a good coach to guide them around the paddock.

I have heard nothing at all about Melbourne making a play for Oldfield,, they have some great young backs down here, why pay top price to break up these kids…. Not sure where Bearfax got his info from.. maybe the Telegraph…..

You are quite right M.C. The report was in Satruday’s Telegraph and referred to an almost unnoticed incdent a few weeks back when a young Manly player was invited to Melboune to have a look see. Wasnt caught, they said, by the media because it didnt involve a prominent Manly star. Oldfield was reportedly the player being courted.
Now I accept your criticism of Telegraph’s reporting, which is often fantasy fabricated stories like the fantasy team comp, and their desire I suspect to just stir up interest in their paper.Certainly the Manly Daily has made no mention of it, and they are often the first to break legit news stories concerning the Manly club (In fact the Telegraph almost report the Daily’s copy verbatum…which I guess cant be construed as plagarism because they are both News LTD publications). But it was a major story, following his 3 try effort so who knows what is real and what is not? Just have to wait seeI guess.

Thanks Bear… Telegraph are unbelievable… Maybe one story in every ten bears a little truth in it.. — I wouldn’t be too worried.. Storm are particularly strong at centre and wing, it would be a waste of the guys time signing for a team where he will not be guaranteed a starting place, he is too good for that scenario..
I am hoping for a Manly v Storm Grand Final… they are the two best teams in the league and have been for last 6 yeras… OOOpppps I am now open for reminders about how we cheated and how Manly must have.. lol….
