De Villiers named Springboks captain
Related coverage
Jean de Villiers was named Springboks captain on Monday for the three-Test series against England as new South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer also had to defend some of his surprising selections in his first squad.
Meyer, who took over this year, picked experienced centre De Villiers to lead the Boks against England, and plans to review the decision ahead of the southern hemisphere’s four-nation rugby championship in August.
The 31-year-old De Villiers, who has played 72 Tests for South Africa since his debut in 2002, said “my heart was in my throat” when he was told on Sunday by Meyer that he would succeed John Smit as captain.
“This is an honour that is not bestowed upon many people and I really hope I can do my country proud,” De Villiers said.
“I do realise there is massive responsibility that comes with this position. The real hard work only starts now.”
Meyer said that part of the reason for picking De Villiers as leader was the impressive way he had captained a young and inexperienced Stormers team to the top of the South Africa conference in the Super Rugby competition.
“Jean commands respect from everyone in South African rugby and in the short space of time we’ve worked together, Jean has shown that he understands what we want to achieve on the field,” Meyer said.
However, despite De Villiers’ Cape Town-based Stormers being the best-performing South African team in Super Rugby, Meyer only selected three of the team’s players in his 32-man squad for the England series, leaving out former squad regulars Gio Aplon and Juan de Jongh and emerging flanker Siya Kolisi.
Instead, Meyer named 13 members of the Bulls – a team he used to coach – in his group, leading to suggestions of provincial bias by some members of the South African media.
Also surprisingly excluded was Cheetahs flanker Heinrich Brussow, a key member of the World Cup squad and viewed as a crucial ball winner for the Springboks at the breakdown.
Meyer said he was happy with his selection, and Brussow’s absence was temporary and a tactical adjustment for the England series. The “core” of the players were just for the three tests, Meyer said.
“There’ll always be criticism, but I’d like the country to get behind the team,” Meyer said. “I think this is the best squad going forward, each guy now needs to pick up his hand and show he needs to be in the team.
Meyer brought nine uncapped players into his squad as South Africa moved on from the era of Smit and Victor Matfield, who as captain and vice-captain led the country to World Cup glory in France in 2007 and played more than 100 tests.
The pair retired from international rugby after last year’s World Cup in New Zealand, when former coach Peter de Villiers also left.

I read that too Mania.
13 Bulls players and no Brussow is short-sighted IMO.
Almost as ludicrous as his initial attempt to get Matfield back for this series and to lead the Boks, no less.
Brett has commented on a few occasions that the Boks may lose the 1st 1 and with this virtual Bulls-built-around-Morne template, combined with their short time together, they just might.
The English have their own injury issues and I reckon Croft’s absence is huge but at least they have been together for a while.

short sighted or ……. the Bulls team is a really young side, was meant to be a mid table team best and the stormers are old and fading. A team for the future, with bright young stars such a Kolisi and six others training with the squad over the next three weeks? I maintain Bismark has been more effective at the breakdown than Brussow this year so maybe it isn’t such a big loose. The wtf in the squad is Kankowski and Oliver….

at least he made the right call with the captaincy….. will wait on the squad anouncement but for now there is a heavy tinge of blue in the Bok for the start if the series but that may change quite quickly

Blasphemy!!!! How dare a Bulls coach make a Stormers player captain.
As for the selections, maybe, just maybe, Meyer want to make the springboks an expansive running side instead of the grinding boring defensive unit that has failed the last 2-3 years. If that is the case, Stormers are the last team you want. Aside from Aplon and maybe Habana, their backline has forgotten the art of try scoring and maybe Meyer wants to bring that to the Springboks again.

stormers are more of a running side than bulls. bulls are boring and have the typical SA gameplan of outkicking a team.

Mania, don’t make me laugh. The Stormers kick for position, use their defence for turnovers and play for penalties. They are the most unimaginative side in super rugby offensively. The Bulls got to where they are on the ladder by scoring tries. The Stormers got to where they are by preventing them. This is why the Stormers will not win the Super XV. They are one dimensional and the elite sides like the Crusaders and Bulls who can bring it both defensively and offensively will always have the edge on them in the games that count.

Good theory KiwiDave, it remains to be seen if Meyer forces Morne Steyn to change his game to suit a running style as he plays more in the traditional mould of Naas Botha and Joel Stransky, than Henry Honnibal or Butch James.
Then again he’s named de Villiers as his captain and he’s also captain of the Stormers.
I don’t expect that Meyer will veer too far from the traditional Bok strengths in this series against England and will be keeping it simple as it’s not a normal buildup and preparation to a test match for any of the SANZAR countries.

it was Meyer that moulded Steyn into the player he is today from the running flyhalf he used to be

You know Rusty
I read somewhere that when Morne first emerged on the scene in SA he was a running flyhalf. That is some conversion by Meyer as Steyn has shown little of his original instincts.

Just have to accept that most commentators here are from Sydney which is why most of them never can decipher so called ‘running rugby’ from the much criticised ‘kicking game’.Stats are totally ignored. Facts are totally ignored. What counts for them is ‘pretty play’
i.e. endless recycling and then a lot of passes back and forth along the backline without any advance of metres. With Sydneysiders its all style and no substance. In a lot of tests you will find the Kiwis kick almost as much as the Boks but they have the players that can break a line decisively when it matters most. The Boks have not had these type of players in the backline for the past few years. The old ‘subdue and penetrate’ can be really excellent and absorbing rugby when it ends in clever tries via the backline from set or broken play. The best exponents of that were the 1974 Lions which, in my opinion, was the greatest test side in history. They dIdn’t just run around like headless chooks looking ‘pretty’. First they exterted control then broke the opponents defense and used their backs to run in tries.Gareth Edwards was a master at gaining territory through clever, controlled kicking. It kept the opposition going backwards which is very demoralising.

I have faith in Meyer. He has to rebuild, so Kiwi Dave might be right about a new style. It is time.

Excuse me but why Wynand Olivier ? He cant pass, he cant make a break – and he gets outsprinted by forwards.
Vermaak? Second choice bulls scrummie.
Kankowski ? – hasnt played all season.
Some shockers, but the Boks should still put a class 15 out.
Cant wait for returns from Bekker, Burger and callups for Vermeulen and Kolisi.
The Stormers pack is monster, their backs have been quite unimaginative agreed – so I dont care what HM does in the backline,
but he needs the right forwards.
Beast Biz Jannie is a given – with cheetahs forwards on bench for second half – Strauss, Oosthuizen
when back, i want Eben and Andries at lock with
Schalk, Siya and Duane loose.
Sharks 1-3
Stormers 4-8
Bulls 9,10 – although id prefer Goosen at 10.
the rest of hte backline he can mix up as he wants.

Heres an entertaining thought for 4N – If SA really want to put out a mongrel pack…
1. Oosthuizen (127kg)
2. du Plessis (116kg)
3. du Plessis (124kg)
4. Etzabeth (120kg)
5. Bekker (122kg)
6. Burger (116kg)
7. Alberts (119kg)
8. Vermeulen (116kg)
960kg

The noise about HM being biased are largely overblown. He is going with players he knows over arguably better players because he only has a week before the england series.
Without injuries to key stormers the team would have most likely looked like this:
1 Beast
2 Bismark
3 Jannie
4 Estebeth
5 Bekker
6 Marcel
7 Alberts
8 Duane
9 Hougaard
10 Morne (With Goosen replacing him within 18 months)
11 Habana
12 Steyn
13 Jean
14 JP
15 Kirschner (Only real questionable choice besides the potentially glaring omission of Brussow)
3 Bulls, 7 Sharks, and 5 Stormers.

10 Morné Steyn
9 Francois Hougaard
8 Pierre Spies
7 Willem Alberts

Some points to consider:
1. HM has two training sessions to build 32 players from 5 different unions (playing 5 different styles of rugby) into a cohesive Bok team. Stands to reason that he would pick a core of players from a single union as this would require little retraining on his part and the combinations will be set. Obviously, HM is going to pick a philosophy he’s comfortable with. He developed the Bulls strategy, ergo 13 bulls in the squad.
HM said he’s aiming to win every game the Boks lineup for. So, makes sense that he would pick a team that’s settle and gives him the best chance of achieving this goal. Hence 13 bulls.
2. Brussow has had a poor 2012. Coenie Oosthuisen has managed more turnovers (from prop) and given away less penalties. One of the cornerstones of HM’s philosophy is a low penalty count. Probably why he left Brussow out. I personally think that he needs to schedule one on one time with Brussow to help him evolve his game. I imagine that’s the medium to long-term plan. However, the English test series is going down in the next couple of days. There’s no time to help Brussow get back to his 2009 form.
3. HM doesn’t consider Aplon as a fullback. As a wing, Aplon competes against Mvovo, JP Pietersen, Basson and Habana for a spot in the side. All the these players have an advantage in size, aerial skills and as good finishing ability. Aplon probably edges them in creative flair, but based on what we’ve seen of HM in the past, I think aerial skills are at a premium, resulting in Aplon’s exclusion.
4. Juan de Jongh has passed to a man outside him probably 3 times the entire season. As a centre, he’s a ball vacuum and should not make the Bok squad. I can’t justify Wynand Olivier’s inclusion.
Similiarly, can’t justify Kanko’s inclusion of Kirchener for that matter.
Heard a rumour that if Duane Vermeulen was not injured, Spies would probably not be in the squad. Think similar calls across the board where first choice Stormer players are out injured.
Personally, I see a starting 15 of:
1. Beast
2. Bismark
3. Jannie/Oosthuizen
4. Etzabeth
5. Juandre
6. Marcel Coetzee
7. Alberts
8. Spies
9. Hougaard
10. Steyn
11. Mvovo
12. Francois Steyn
13. De Villiers
14. JP Pietersem
15. Lambie
Sharks back three, Centres have been in the same bok set up since 2007, Bulls half back combination, Sharks frontrow, Locks are a bit mix and match, sharks flankers and Spies. There are combinations across the board and experience along with Super rugby performers. Best you can hope for on short notice.

Just realised the team I’ve named is quite Sharks heavy. 9 sharks if you count Francois Steyn (former Shark). Suspect HM will probably go with Basson/Habana (former Bull) instead of Mvovo to give an established kick and chase combo with the halfbacks.
