Who would be a rugby league coach? Pressure is your best friend, stress is your closest colleague, and unemployment is your next career move.
It was once said that there are two types of coaches: ones that have been fired, and ones that are waiting to be fired. Sadly, for the four men listed below, they currently fall under that second category:
David Furner
The speculation about Furner has been rife all season long. Bizarrely, before the Raiders had even opened their 2012 campaign, there were whispers that Furner was under pressure.
Canberra started the season solidly, and the talk died down. However, the Raiders are currently struggling considerably, and the whispers have become shouts once again.
The Raiders have a formidable forward pack with plenty of size, along with solid talent in the backs. Whilst they have had some injury concerns, there is no excuse for them to be as poor as they’ve been, especially defensively. They’re a better side than 15th on the ladder.
Furner’s decision to switch Josh Dugan to five-eighth was either going to be a masterstroke, or the sign of a desperate man.
The 40-0 score line versus the Tigers on the weekend would indicate that it’s probably the latter.
Stephen Kearney
It’s not exactly a bold prediction to place Kearney on this list. Parramatta have been woeful all season long, Kearney has been hauled in front of the Eels board on at least two occasions, and he even received the traditional kiss of death in the form of public backing from the Chairman.
Before last night’s win, the latest reports were that Kearney had two weeks to save his job, with Jason Taylor and Ricky Stuart already mentioned as replacements.
Let’s be honest, this isn’t a case of gossip or innuendo. When a club is bolted to the bottom of the ladder, the coach is on borrowed time.
Whilst the problems at Parramatta are much bigger than Kearney, it’s always an easy out to simply fire the coach, and despite the victory over the Sharks, Kearney would be feeling far from secure.
Ricky Stuart
Stuart was appointed to the New South Wales head coaching job in 2011 to much fanfare.
After last year’s State of Origin series, many pundits credited Stuart with restoring some pride in the Blues jumper, and legitimately challenging Queensland’s dominance.
However, any way you want to frame it, should the Blues lose next Wednesday night, then Stuart has presided over two series losses.
All the talk about how much the Blues are improving is a moot point. Results are the only thing that matter at State of Origin level, and Stuart will have come home empty handed two years in a row.
Throw in his inconsistent selection policies, and a reputation for being a whinger, and would it really shock anyone if he was fired at the end of another unsuccessful Origin campaign?
Wayne Bennett
The super coach under pressure? Madness, I hear you say! Perhaps, but hear me out.
Nathan Tinkler is as impatient as he is successful. He’s also hot headed with a quick trigger finger. He doesn’t suffer fools, or lack of success, gladly.
Bennett is certainly no fool, but he is yet to bring much success to the Hunter Region.
I can assure you that when Tinkler signed Wayne Bennett’s fat cheque, it wasn’t in the hope that the Knights would be sitting in 13th place. Perhaps expectations for Newcastle were a touch unfair, but by the same token, they shouldn’t be well outside the top eight either.
Bennett’s shadow, Darius Boyd, has been well down on form. They’ve lost skipper Kurt Gidley for the season. The attack has spluttered and lacked cohesion. And the Knights defence has conceded a whopping 247 points.
Whilst you could argue that’s not all the coaches fault, the harsh reality is that if you’re going to take the big money, then with the kudos also comes the blame.
I don’t think Bennett is under any real pressure of being fired just yet, but knowing Tinkler, he’d probably want to get his Knights firing very soon.

Stephen Kearney’s pressure has been lifted thanks to the Parra players playing like there careers depended on it which is so stupid. the last 3 wins from Parra are from Kearney pulling the pin on his “structured’ game plan and to play whats in front of them, so i wonder what exactly is his job at Parra? how does a coach keep his job when his game plans result in losses EVERY time this season and wins from letting the boys do it free style? Man being a Parra and a NSW fan is pulling me towards supporting AFL.

I think we are a tad harsh on Stuart. The Queensland side is amazing, they pretty much make up the aussie side all by themselves. Against such a phenomonal team NSW does well to win a game. At least under Stuart NSW are giving QLD a run for their money.

Spot on Sam.
QLD has possibly the greatest rep side ever assembled. NSW could name 4 different sides that could all match it with QLD but never be superior. Player to player they are a step above.
I think Stuart has done a great job. For the first time in years, with a clearly inferior team to the QLDers, we have the belief and desire to win. We saw glimpses of it last year but this year the players don’t sit in awe of their counterparts. Psychology is a huge part of the battle.
If we have to lay blame on anyone it was the disaster that was Craig Bellamy (2 wins from 9 games). He was never going to go out and unleash on his Storm players. He knew which side his bread was buttered on. His tenure put NSW back 5 years. He was king of inconsistent selections (captain on the bench?!) and I very much doubt he had any thoughts towards building a team.

It has merit mate. I’ve been saying for years that Bellamy was never going to instruct the Blues to smash, or target his Melbourne players.

Hey Sam, I have no doubt that Stuart is being judged harshly. But that sadly comes with the territory of being a coach. It’s a very fickle business!

Sam Brown, I don’t think so, Ricky Stuart seems intent on sticky with the idea that a wound up full of emotion, backs to the wall NSW side can beat QLD. This idea was proved to be the wrong way to go under Bellamy and now Stuart is sticking with it!
Have you listened to the latest dribble to come out of Greg Bird? He is flat out telling everbody that NSW is “sick of being walked all over for the past couple of years” and “we want tack a backward step in any situation”.
Once again Ricky Stuart trying to create this super emotionally charged attack on QLD in an attempt to beat them. When will they learn that this may be successful once per series but to actually win a series they need to control their emotions develop a game plan to take advantage of their skills and then execute?
Its not rocket science!

The Barry said | June 5th 2012 @ 1:48pm | Report comment
Just because Greg Bird is fired up doesn’t mean it’s part of some Ricky Stuart masterplan. Doesn’t take much to fire Birdy up.
Queensland beat ‘superior’ NSW teams for years on emotion / passion.
When NSW try and create the same environment it’s ‘dribble’.

You are correct The Barry, that approach allowed QLD a number of one off wins when they were just not good enough to win a series. I am not saying that this issue only applies to NSW however I am saying that this is the problem they currently have and they will not fix it trying to go the bash!
If you can’t see that then maybe lots of NSW supporters including the coaching staff cant see it either. As a QLD supporter I say “THATS GOLD”

Its amusing to me that the coaches are allways the fall guy, Its allways the coaches of the bottom teams under pressure for obvious reasons but the truth is all the those teams have been struggling to perform before the current coaches were hired. I think in Kearnys case and Bennets case they need to be given time to build a team that they want to coach instead of the ones they have inherited. I think its fair to agree that Furners brother is keeping him in a job but i dont think its becuase he cant coach, I dont think he has the man management skills required to earn the players respect for them to believe in him as a coach. On stuart, i agree with Sam, we need to be realistic about SOO. Qld are a team with experience in playing together and untill we get a team thats had more than 2 or 3 games together we will always be trying to catch up.

Not a Ricky Stuart fan, but very harsh to place him on this list. The Blues have been going pretty well this year and last (against a champion team). They played very well in Sydney last year, well in Melbourne, and I expect them to win well in Sydney next week. Stuart has created a close knit team full of passion and commitment.

Why leave out Hayne from game one last year and watmough from game one this year, he just want to be recognised as a master coach by pulling off a win with these shock selections. Bellamy would have created a stable environment and given the current player roster for nsw I think he would be a much better coach.

Ricky Stuart has an abysmal coaching record at every level.I have no idea why he keeps being considered for any coaching role whatsoever.
Bennett is safe. No way will he get punted.
Furner and Kearney on the other hand…

Totally agree on Stuart. As soon as Freddy retired he was exposed. Not to forget the only reason his Roosters team was so good was because they decided 5 in a tackle was the way to go. This was the beginning of the end for a fair, black and white ruck area.

Agree with the above, Sticky has a terrible coaching record and has been sacked from two (?) clubs before NSW signed him up. Sure he is playing against arguably one of the best sides ever, but the way he has handled himself in defeat has been embarrassing as has his weird selections and back-peddling – I remember him stating that Hayne was not a fullback and was instead a 5/8 before selecting him on the wing???? Before the 1st game, Gus (in one of his pre-game talks said that “Ricky Stuart said to me that a person who keeps doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result in insane” (or to that effect) – well Ricky – might be time for a change hey?

To be fair, they choked massively. They won every game in that tournament by a massive stretch before the final (lowest pre final was a 24 point win against the Kiwis).

Ricky Stuart has very poor judgement of selecting players and in their rightful positions. He rules on his emotions instead of facts and figures. He spends too much time on pumping players up instead of providing a sound game plan. I get sick and tired of people saying how good QLD are, we know that but any team can be beaten! Choose the right players and in the right positions with a sound game plan and we will get a lot closer then what we have been so far. He is improving to some extent in that area having a much better team this time around but still far from being perfect!

Furner teams seem uncoached and seem to have no structure in attack nor set plays. Raiders have been held scoreless only twice at Bruce, last week and last year.

I can’t believe people are sticking up for Ricky Stuart. He’s actually got a pretty poor coaching record and been fired from the Roosters, Sharks and Kangaroos. If NSW lose next Wednesday, we should add the Blues to that list. Overrated isn’t a strong enough word to describe Stuart.

He took the Roosters to 3 Grand finals and won a premiership. Not many coaches have done that. People then dispute this saying that it was such a great team, anybody could have coached them. Yet in the next breath praise Bennett as a supercoach who has had a near rep team at his disposal every year. Now that he doesn’t he too is faltering.
Coaching is a tough gig.

Good point eagleJack.
Stuarts achievements are often glossed over because people have a strong reaction to him.
He only won at the Roosters because Gould had set the team up. Yet he went to 3 GFs for one title. Gould never made a GF in 5 or 6 years in charge.
Flanagan is hailed for his season so far at the Sharks with limited resources. Stuart took them to equal first on points in 2008 and was one game away from a GF – but all you hear about is how he was sacked.

I agree regarding Stuart, the Blues are more competitive under him than Bellamy. On the Club scene the Raiders have been so disappointing the last 18 months. After there breakout season in 2010 they have reverted to type. There is plenty of talent and resources in Canberra. Maybe favourite son Sticky is the man to right the ship. Kearney has been under the pump since day 1 and the Knights have been woeful for most of the season. You would expect Bennett to get a second season.
