NSW have wrong mentality, says Meninga
Still shaking his head over NSW’s game one reaction, Queensland coach Mal Meninga has taken a shot at the Blues by claiming they don’t have the right “mentality” to play Origin.
In the fallout from a host of NSW complaints over Origin I’s officials, whistleblower Matt Cecchin and video referee Sean Hampstead were sacked for next week’s second game in Sydney.
So incensed was coach Ricky Stuart after Queensland’s 18-10 win, he threw a media ban on his team – which he was later forced to withdraw – and hired an independent analyst who reportedly revealed Queensland went unpunished in game one for 10 incidents that warranted penalties.
Stuart hasn’t backed down ahead of game two, threatening to speak with league officials about the new-look referees before next week’s Sydney showdown.
But Meninga said Queensland would never let the referees become an Origin issue no matter what happened on the field.
“If we get beaten we just put our hand up and say ‘we should play better’ – they (NSW) don’t seem to have that sort of mentality,” Meninga said during a team visit to Roma, in the state’s south-west on Wednesday.
“We understand the referees have got a tough job to do – all we can do is play by their rulings.
“We just get on and do the job. That’s who we are.”
Meninga rated Origin I as one of the great series openers – and he should know as a 1980 original.
But the Maroons mentor was frustrated that game one had been overshadowed by controversy, namely Hampstead’s awarding of a contentious second-half Greg Inglis try.
“I was fortunate to be involved (in Origin) from the start ..(and) that was one of the best first games I have seen in a long, long time – it doesn’t get the recognition that it deserves,” he said.
Asked about NSW’s post-game complaints, Meninga joked “that’s Ricky”.
However he was deadly serious when he said he was already sick of the negative press from NSW ahead of game two.
“The first 24 hours (after game one) I read the papers (then stopped) – you get sick of it after a while,” he said.
“We are not like that. That’s not the way that we prepare.
“Obviously they (NSW) are trying to instill a bit of hatred into NSW supporters, trying to boost their team’s morale by saying they were unlucky but that’s not the road we take.
“Now we’ve got to go to Sydney and prove them wrong.”
Queensland were honoured with a street parade on Wednesday in Roma – hometown of Origin godfather Artie Beetson.
It was an emotional time for the team, especially after Beetson’s death from a heart attack on the Gold Coast in December 2011.
Roma – which was also where retired legend Darren Lockyer grew up – saluted their other favourite sons, current Maroons flyer Brent Tate and ex-internationals Willie Carne and Wally Fullerton-Smith on the main street.
The only Maroons absent were Ash Harrison (groin) and Matt Scott (personal reasons).
Officials were still confident Harrison would play and hoped Scott would enter Origin camp on the Sunshine Coast on Thursday.

Saint Mal the benevolent. Reverse the decisions and subsequent result and I’d bet my left nut he’d be singing a different tune. But I guess someones gotta stir the pot up North, now over to ‘one eye Wally’ on the sideline.

The rats and filth rant will go down as the biggest whinge in Origin history. Both he and Ricky are disgracing the sport. This 3 game sideshow is losing its shine. Seems the off-field theatre is taking a higher priority to the game itself. Both sides of the border are guilty of dragging the game into the gutter

Agreed – this so called psychological battle is getting tiresome. I think I preferred it when neither side made inflammatory comments before a game to avoid giving the opposition a cause…

Queensland play the victim and underdog better then any other club/team/state/country in any code this is another spin or attempt to do so. Nsw, the media and the public get suckered in by articles like this every time, someone tell Mal to uppercut himself and someone tell nsw to not put up with ten infringements on the field that go the other way. Good teams read the ref and adjust.

I think Mal is doing a fantastic job of uniting Queensland behind his cause. It must be tough to keep the fans and players up for as long as Mal has, and Queensland is behind him 100%, not 75% not 60%,
Like Emerald last year, the town of Roma shut down yesterday and closed the streets for the Maroons, now that is loyalty, faith, pride, call it what you like, Queenslanders are Gods North.
Maybe that is what NSW are having problems getting their heads around. You only have to look at the half hearted crowds turning up to games , they have lost faith, and have no idea how to regain that now it has vanished.
Its a beautiful thing to watch.
Have they sold out their one and only game in Sydney yet, ? i still see it being advertised.

Mate you QlDers keep crapping about Nsw lack of passion but you have to realise we understand that its just a game and theres more to life than a bloody exhibition game. its well known that there isnt much happening north of the border but me personally, i dont have time to drive to everygame of footy and go to stadiums like a sold out suncorp and loiter out the front without tickets . If i had to go to everygame my team plays, i would be sacked from work and have limited time to spend with my kids. Word of advice mate, get a life and stop whinging about nsw fans not going to games and worry about your own or should i say your mums backyard. I believe Rugby League is dying in NSW and AFL is slowly taking over so maybe in 10years you can make your own NRL comp or should i say QRL comp and keep the shield forever and relieve us of your bickering.

Why are we pointing fingers over the media circus that is just there to incite some passion? This whole thing of ‘he said she said’ by commenters demonstrates that the people doing it don’t fully understand the entire point of what both Ricky and Mal are culpable of. The media is the playground of the off-field arm-wrestle, and those buying into one message or the other don’t really see the irony of what they’re doing. QLD won game 1, that is done. Very nice piece of footwork by Mal to turn Ricky’s message on its head and portray the Maroons as the underdog once more, but the bystanders should realise that that is all that it is.

“Obviously they (NSW) are trying to instill a bit of hatred into NSW supporters, trying to boost their team’s morale by saying they were unlucky but that’s not the road we take”.. Meninga, 2012..
He acts as if NSW supporters need the coaches, players, whomever from the NSW hierarchy to tell us what to think or believe…. as if we couldn’t see how blatant the poor refereeing decisions were at certain periods in Game 1 ourselves – and we don’t need that to instill any hatred into us anyway…… just look at the comments on here from QLD supporters and you’ll see why the dislike is already there (because “hatred” is such a strong word – maybe Big Mal has a hatred of others in him?),,,,
and how can any team play better if there were any poor refereeing decisions? I bet that is one of NSW’s game plans for Origin 2: we got a few poor decisions that went against us made by the refs in Origin 1… so we just have to adjust our game plan and play much better than we did in Game 1, just in case of more ref. blunders then we’ll have ourselves covered to win the game…. yeah, right!…… nearly as funny as his comment that if the boot were on the other foot then Mal would zip his mouth, or about him keeping quiet about decisions at the judiciary that don’t seem to be in his best interests….

Who cares what Mal thinks,he doesn’t even coach QLD, he’s just a figurehead. Blokes a dud, look at what he did when he coached the Raiders………..NOTHING!. How he is even in consideration to be the next immortal is beyond me, overated as a player & coach!
