Beale and Cooper in Brisbane hotel incident
Related coverage
The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that the Australian Rugby Union is investigating an incident that allegedly has involved Wallabies stars Kurtley Beale and Quade Cooper at a Brisbane hotel.
It is reported that one of the two players was involved in a scuffle at the hotel resulting in police attending the scene, but no arrests were made.
Neither Beale or Cooper are involved in Saturday’s Test against Wales.
It is understood the ARU is yet to be informed of the full situation, and that the ARU’s disciplinary committee will investigate the events.
“We’ve been made aware of an incident overnight and are still making our own enquiries,” an ARU spokesman confirmed.
“As a matter of process the issue will be referred to an ARU disciplinary review procedure. We have nothing further to add at this stage.”
Former Wallabies team manager and federal policeman Phil Thomson is the ARU integrity officer and will be in charge of the disciplinary review.

“Cooper and Beale hammered at a brissie pub last night. Beale kicked out, tries to get back in, security escorts him out. He starts punching the security guard (fore arm to the head, followed by an upper cut to the stomach) onlooker starts filming it on his mobie, cooper tries to take a run at him. Has to be restrained.”
(sigh)

Is that what happened? Up until punches being thrown, it’s not too bad.
What these footy players need to learn is that if you want to go and get hammered, do it in private, not public. You’re just asking for trouble.

This is from a Fox Sports News employee. How accurate their information is I don’t know. Danny Weidler will probably have something on it in about 15mins.
I hope it’s just a storm in a teacup.

So two guys in their early twenties that aren’t playing professional rugby on the weekend, get thrown out of a club by a bouncer when on the piss. Shock-horror!

Yeah the only concern for me is “punches being thrown” although if beale was p*ssed enough to be thrown out I have to question the severity of the punches being thrown.
And if coopers punches are as hard as he’s “knees to the head” then we have nothing to worry about

I wonder if rugby superstars around the world ever wish they could be like many of us were every weekend in our 20s….getting pissed with our mates after rugby and causing trouble. Obviously ‘the system’ can’t turn everyone into a Pocock. With fame comes great responsibility and it’s no surprise many 20yo men aren’t ready for that. No kidding.

Well at least they aren’t avoiding contact situations.
Any word on whether Quade tackled someone effectively. That’d be a first.
And what on earth is an “Integrity Officer”.

He nailed that Bok in the RWC last year, effectively saving the game for Australia.

I just had a further horrible thought that this means they may both get suspended for a few games by the “Integrity Officer”. That would mean Barnes at 10 not just for the Welsh series but the 4 nations. Arrgghhh ….

What concerns me is they are both supposedly rehabilitating from injury, yet are out on the sauce at 2am. These guys are professionals, they are employed by their franchise and the ARU and I would have thought that means overcoming their rehab as quickly as possible so they can play (which is what they are ultimately paid for, taking the field).
Then there is this being on top of the Scotland result, so much for maintaining team morale in the face of adversity.
And finally there is Cooper grabbing and smashing some blokes phone. He seems to have a fetish for nicking other peoples electronic equipment.
Most drunken young louts (including almost all of us no doubt) who get thrown out at 2am and stagger off and don’t beat up the bouncer and smash other peoples stuff. Its not ok to laugh this off as young blokes letting off steam RK.

Jutsie said | June 8th 2012 @ 3:46pm | Report comment
Yeah if it was just getting kicked out for being drunk its one thing but if there is truth to the other stuff then some discipline is required.

Firstly my comment was the second in the thread (meaning not a lot of info up). If he’s had a go at someone’s phone then he deserves to be disciplined, but don’t go overreacting either. It is not like he’s hospitalised someone in a rage. As for rehab, he’s done, he is playing again, just because he isn’t ready for the Wallabies doesn’t mean he needs to be wrapped in cotton wool. People are entitled to make idiots of themselves on their own time. So he missed an engagement the next day. So what. Dock his pay move on. And put away the holier than thou attitude.

sittingbison said | June 8th 2012 @ 6:23pm | Report comment
Don’t know what holier than thou about it RK, I can recall plenty of times going out and getting smashed, but not too many times bashing a bouncer, smashing other peoples stuff and getting investigated by the cops. Does that make me holier than thou?
These guys have behaved worse than idiots right when the entire Australian rugby community is reeling with most of the start players (including these two) injured, a loss to Scotland and t tough game against Wales tomorrow. TBH I’m just a bit tired of the usual suspects getting the “boys will be boys” platitudes. They have done Australian rugby another disservice.
BTW Beale just had shoulder surgery, why is he throwing punches? And Cooper is cut from the squad because he is not fit enough and needs intensive rehab.

Red Kev said | June 8th 2012 @ 9:11pm | Report comment
No No and No.
You don’t know what the hell happened. Nor do I. All you have is hearsay. “Bashing” a bouncer? I doubt it, a couple of shoves or hits while attempting to extricate himself from a bouncer’s grip is more likely.
Do you know Beale threw punches?
Do you know Cooper smashed anything?
Let the police investigate and if there is anything to answer for let it go through those channels.
Replace Cooper and Beale with two of your mates and this is not a news story. I don’t buy into the personal brand nonsense. Nor do I believe that your job owns your conduct outside your work time and place. Nor do I put any weight into the “role model” argument. People choose who their role models are, it is incumbent on them to choose good ones, it is not incumbent on anyone to ensure they themselves act like a good role model. People who try to hold sports stars to higher standards than the rest of the public are nothing more than sanctimonious hypocrites.
Cooper does not need intensive rehab. He is fit. He has played 80 minutes of a match a couple of weeks ago. Deans doesn’t want to risk re-injuring him after major surgery before the rugby championships and that is fine, but if the Reds were playing this week so would Cooper be. He doesn’t need intensive rehab.

Can’t agree more. If 20 something Rugby players are my son’s role model then shame of me and my brother and my mates – we should be their role models.

I have had a lot of time for both of these players in the past because they are both unbelievably talented and exciting, players who really pull in the crowds. Sure they have had a few misdemeanours, but they are really just kids…… However I recently came across QC’s “official” website which contained the following:
Quade Cooper, is a Fly Half in the world game of Rugby Union, whose extraordinary skills, creativity and sensational athleticism have seen him entertain Rugby followers and non-followers alike. Quade is arguably the most exciting and electrifying player on the planet.
http://quadecooper.com/welcome/
Now I think he’s just a tosser. And I’m not talking about his long distance passing skills. It seems he will not learn and it seems its a matter of arrogance, not naivety and inexperience.

This line from the SMH report made me laugh:
Cooper was due to attend a Queensland Reds business breakfast this morning but made his apologies due to a “sore throat”.
Not only can Cooper not handle his grog, he can’t back up. Both these guys have had plenty of chances, warnings and support. If the reports are accurate, there are no excuses for Beale and Cooper.

Greg growden has now added to his report that the owner of the hotel said the incident was minor and they would not be taking further action.
See this is what annoys me about journalism in this country and the 24 hour news cycle. Why couldnt he have spoken to all parties to verify the story before going to print.
