Australia play Wales tonight at Suncorp Stadium under immense pressure from the Australian rugby public. A poor loss to Scotland mid-week has many concerned that an injury-hit Wallabies can perform against Six Nations champions Wales.
With nine changes to the team that lost 9-6 on a wild night in Newcastle, coach Robbie Deans has again had little preparation, with just two training sessions for preparation.
The Wallabies depth looks short, and they’re missing would-be starters Kurtley Beale, James O’Connor, Drew Mitchell and Quade Cooper, while Ben Tapuai and Christian Lealiifano are also injured.
Berrick Barnes holds on to his spot at fly-half, with Deans left few other options. Rugby league convert Cooper Vuna starts for the Wallabies on the right wing after Joe Tomane was ruled out with an ankle injury.
The forward pack is heavy on Waratahs muscle, despite the ‘Tahs being the most maligned team in Australian rugby. The addition of Rob Simmons, Benn Robinson and Wycliff Palu adds strength to the forward pack. Roar columnist David Lord reckons Deans has risked his career on the make-up (and Waratah centric nature) of this forward pack.
Will Genia had a poor night against Scotland and even if the forwards are able to get on top of the Welsh it is his task to distribute good quick ball and make the right decisions. It will certainly be easier on a dry surface at Suncorp.
Australia does have recent success over Wales, beating them in the Rugby World Cup to take 3rd place, and away at Millenium Stadium in Cardiff at the end of the 2011 season.
Yet, this is no ordinary Wales touring side and the young Welsh team has grown from their Rugby World Cup experience.
Wales were unbeaten in the Six Nations tournament, and in direct comparison, Australia’s mid-week opponent Scotland didn’t win a game, including losing to Italy.
The Welsh are here to win and they bring a side that offer the best chance in decades to break the Wallabies’ unbeaten streak at home, a stretch that reaches back to 1969.
The real strength of the Welsh lies in the backrow – with Mike Phillips and Rhys Priestland outstanding during the Rugby World Cup and they have continued that form over the European season.
Can the Wallabies prevent Wales from breaking their win-drought against the Wallabies at home? The Australians will need to show far more than they did against the Scots, with more aggression, quicker ruck-distribution and more free-flowing play required.

Good effort. Big worry from 45 mins to 60 mins. The whole team seemed to be ball-watching and some of the big men (Sharpe and Palu) were lagging and should have been subbed earlier. Vuna should not have started (who is responsible for this). The Rebels really have to work on his D.
13 penalties ot 7 to Wales – so good result.

I think this match does serve to support the idea that the key to the Wallabies succeeding is attitude.
They all wanted it, they all showed up and the application to detail was there.
But it won’t mean anything if they don’t back it up the next 2 weeks.
I just hope everyone doesn’t start telling them how great they are until the series is over and won 3 nil

bmwwilliams said | 10:34pm | Report comment
Very valid comments Will.
Attitude was the main reason I was worried about having so many Waratahs in the side, rather than the qualities of the players themselves.
The history under Deans has been very up and down in terms of attitude unfortunately – Can’t remember seeing them turn up for more than one week at a time.
Hopefully this time will be different!

Wales were great tonight too. They didn’t fall off too many tackles. There was a few times I saw how great they can be out wide. Priestland needs to give them more chances. He can kick well, but in a SH test you aren’t going to win many games 14-10 like in the 6-Nations. He’s going to have to give Cuthbert, Davies, North and Halfpenny more touches to keep up.

Wallabies were great when the ball was fast.
The biggest problem I saw was that 10min period where I could see them leaking a couple of quick tries. Wales weren’t quite on the mark and only got 1. That will change next week when they click a little more together. Wallabies are going to need to dig deeper than that sooner to get themselves out of their own end.
9:55pm
ABfan said | 9:55pm | Report comment
Agreed. they ran fantastic lines when they attacked from deep, some very good support play too. I thought they dominated most facets of the game for a significant period. its just that final touch of execution that was missing and if that had clicked tonight. the score would have blown out.

My standouts in the pack:
Pocock, Higginbotham (not all the time, but was very visible for bursts) and Moore was great when he came on.
Backs:
Genia (MOTM)
Barnes (happy for him to stay there until Cooper demands selection again.
McCabe
Ioane (hunts for the ball like a beagle in the forrest)

3:11pm
Ceebow said | 3:11pm | Report comment
He tends to be reactive instead of proactive when it comes to the rotation, as soon as Wales made there subs they got momentum and troubled our defense, and after they posted points Deans decided to make his subs.

The Wallabies went through a very trying period in that second half. Wales came back from 14 behind to 1 point. At that point the Wallabies were able to clear their line for the first time in a while and capitalised on the next great attacking chance.
Pocock was happy that Genia and Barnes controlled possession well for the team for long stretches.

So Kepu deserves a lot of credit at tight head. He played the whole game and stood up. I also think Sharpie deserves a medal for coming out of retirement for the sake of the team, whatever people think of him. As far as Wales is concerned, I reckon their backline has too many big blokes for Australian conditions.

They get into the attacking area quickly and earn a penalty when Palu fell off his feet at the ruck. They need to move it now Wales.
Kick for goal. The contest needs this to go over. And it should. Just to the right of the right upright (hehe) and 38m out.

Really interestingly I think every member of the Wallaby backrow has out-played their counterpart; and that has allowed Genia to get a lot of quick ball. For mine that has been the difference.

Pace of the game is too fast for the NH sides. The ball is so quick and they’re behind the gainline so fast that Wales are back pedaling. In contrast Australia have so much time to wait for the welsh ball to move from the ruck due to great ruck spoiling play but also a generally slothful ruck attitude from wales. No pace at all

There is a nice ticky tack early jumper call from Joubert. He’s heard the calls of bias on the roar and evened things up once the other way.
Wales have the ball just inside Australian half now. They go wide once but only just get over the AD line. They are very well spread across the field, even the forwards. Need to get a little closer and shallower to push each other through gaps.
Now they make ground. It’s up near the 22. And then a penalty to Australia. Phillips held it in on the ground.

In what sense? Both teams have gone out to spoil each others ball and Joubert could have penalised each side much more, but hasn’t.
Technically, he is trying to let the game flow. It’s not his fault how the teams decide to attack the breakdown. But yeah, I think Wales have been unlucky with a couple of calls, but the Wallabies have been the better side.
Wales have played how I expected them to play, but they’ve still been disappointing. The execution is very much lacking in their game.

The black machine marches on.
I want the wallabies to win tonight, and im tipping them to do so by 10. but I dont want excuses if they lose. the international team needs to step up stop believing there own media hype and play their hearts out for pride of the jersey, maybe then the gap wont be so far between them and the all blacks.

Fantastic wallabie win, they had their heads down for a couple minutes half-way through the second half. but had really good resolve, and picked the intensity back up. I thought it was a comphrensive victory, the bench was used very well, match fitness concerned me alittle (although with two games in one week its expected) Genia man of the match for me. he took it upon himself, really stepped up. he was frantic and accurate all game. excellent decision making.
Having watched and enjoyed that game. my only concern as mentioned was a brief fade from the wallabies. they seemed really out of sorts when their heads were down, wales had them at sixes and sevens for several minutes. if it wasnt for the determination of Genia, Pocock and mcCabe it could have turned the balance of the game.

In recent times Wallabies have needed to be on the back foot before they pull out the big one.
I didnt think they played that bad on Tuesday (all things considered) just ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard, it’s a double edge sword that comes around like our qtr final against the Boks the owned the game but we ended on the right side of the scoreboard.
Especially with five debutants and nasty nasty weather i couldnt beleive my eyes when I seen poor will genia shaking with the cold like he was fxxKIn freezing !!!
Well be ok !!!!the public can be harsh but its only because people who follow the wallabies acctually love them in a way that no other sport can appreciate and when they loose its like they cheated on us.
My prediction is for wales to bolt outta the blocks then when its doesnt go to plan wallabies will prevail in the latter stages.
Around 13 wales to 22 aus.
