Essendon will be looking to bounce back from a shock upset last weekend, while the Sydney Swans can return to the top four if they get up. We’ll have live scores and a live blog from 7.40pm tonight.
Essendon were on the receiving end of one of the biggest upsets in recent memory last week, going down to the winless Demons by six points at the MCG. In the slippery conditions they looked nothing like the confident, skilful and quick side that had lost only one game in the first nine rounds, and that by a point.
There’s no reason for James Hird and his charges to overreact though. Even good teams have off games, and the conditions last Saturday night really didn’t suit their style of play.
Colyer and Lovett-Murray, who were ineffective last week, have been dropped, and Pears misses with a knock to the knee. Dyson Heppell and Cale Hooker return from injury and mid-sizean>d defender David Myers comes into the squad.
There would have to be a nagging fear at the back of Hird’s mind. In 2011 the Bombers were flying high going into round nine, only to be surprised by the lowly Tigers. That was the start of a five game losing streak that effectively ended their top four chances.
It’s very important the Bombers win tonight so they can go into their round twelve bye with a nine and two record, and head off any danger of another mid-season funk.
They’ll need to be on their game to beat the Swans, who will have plenty of motivation this evening.
After going unbeaten for the first five rounds, the buzz died down for Sydney after they lost three games out of four.
A thumping win over the Bulldogs at the SCG last Sunday put them in fifth, just one game behind the ladder leaders and with the best percentage in the league.
If they can upset the Bombers at Etihad, they’ll go into the bye in the top four, and with Adam Goodes to return in the second half of the season they can start to seriously think about a premiership run.
Ben McGlynn is out for the Swans, after being charged with striking by the MRP. Luke Parker misses with a broken collarbone. Nick Malceski and Andrejs Everitt come in after strong performances in the NEAFL.
The loss of two contested ball winners in Parker and McGlynn is a real drawback for the Swans, because I feel that this game will be decided by the clearances. That’s been Essendon’s real strength this season, with Stanton, Watson and Howlett all in excellent form.
Kennedy, Bolton, Hanneberry and Jack should make them earn every possession, though.
These two teams played a couple of genuine thrillers against one another last season.
The Swans pinched a five point win at the SCG in round 3 after trailing for most of the day.
In round 20 luck was on the Bombers’ side when Adam Goodes narrowly missed a shot after the siren to give Essendon victory by a point.
If tonight’s game is anything like last those two we’re in for a treat tonight.

Pretty good TV ratings for this game on 7mate, 103k between Sydney and Brisbane, guessing more in Sydney, and 220k on fox.
532k on 7 Between Melb, Adelaide, Perth.
I actually watched the first 3 quarters on and off and switched it off at 3/4 time, could not believe the full time score.

The Swans defence was unbelievable for the first three quarters. They just strangled the Bombers out of the game and left them shattered, bereft of confidence, and trailing by eight goals at three quarter time.
Then all of a sudden the Bombers flicked the switch and rampaged back into the game in the last term. Where they couldn’t buy a goal in the first three quarters, they couldn’t miss in the last. The Swans managed to pinch a couple of goals against the run of play which I suppose in the end was the difference.
It’s seems incredible that the Swans kicked as many goals in that last quarter, when they hardly touched the ball, as the Bombers kicked in the first three quarters put together.
Ultimately, this was a win for effectiveness over romance. Poor Courtenay Dempsey. He did absolutely the right thing by running around and kicking long…if there had been two more seconds on the clock. He ran off his line right as the siren went. Just terrible timing.
For the Bombers, Watson was their best. He was great all day and that goal near the end was almost a matchwinner. Hooker and Howlett were also busy and Davey kicked three and provided some run.
For Sydney, Lewis Jetta ran all day and found plenty of space. Some of his disposal was a bit questionable but he kept the Swans going forward with 21 kicks and three goals.
Bolton, O’Keefe, McVeigh, Bird, Jack and Kennedy were good inside and made it difficult for the Bombers to get clean possession from the contest. Grundy was a rock in the backline for the first three quarters, and had good assistance from Richards and Nick Smith. The Sydney defence just seemed to disappear in the last though, after being dominant for most of the game.

The Bombers kicked 2.15 in the first three quarters, and then 9.1 in the final quarter.
The only explanation I have for that is a combination of the Swans’ defence dropping off and the Bombers very quickly getting their confidence back.
Sydney pretty much went to sleep in that last quarter, after keeping up an amazing level of intensity for the first three. Were they complacent, or just tired? Whichever it was it didn’t hurt them in the end, and at least for the moment they’re top of the ladder.

Essendon will do it – too much momentum and Swans have lost their heads. This is a rout and I really don’t understand how it has happened. That was confusion in the defensive ranks that failed to defend that. Can’t believe the running game has turned on in the fourth quarter where that sort of play should be hardest to effect.

The third quarter ends and it was a lot like the first two. Essendon had their fair share of the ball, but just couldn’t penetrate the rock solid Sydney defence and couldn’t convert when they did.
The Sydney wingers again found plenty of space and again made the Bombers pay.
There’s just nothing Hird can do. He doesn’t have an effective forward out there and his team doesn’t have the pace to run with the Sydney midfield.
At three quarter-time Sydney lead Essendon 11.8.74 to 2.15.27.

Again, the Swans extra pace tells. Dennis-Lane takes the ball away from a contest on the wing and sends it long into the forward-line. Jack wins the ball at ground level and gets it off to Jetta who runs into an open goal and snuffs out any faint chance of a Bomber fightback.

Well, that won’t make the Bombers fans any happier. Pyke is dead set pinged for dropping the ball and the umpire inexplicably calls play on. The Swans sweep it forward and Jetta has a shot from straight in front.
Perhaps Lewis has a sense of justice as he misses to the right.
This time the Bombers sweep it from defence and Monfries finds some space 30m out on an angle. From a set shot he kicks it around the corner and…

Coaches should buy the DVD of that half of football, sit their defenders down and tell them to do exactly what the blokes in red and white did. Absolute textbook stuff. Everytime the Bombers went forward, every attacking option was covered by at least one defender. Every time the ball hit the turf, there were Swans players in positions to clear. When they got in trouble, there was always a couple of outlets. And when they cleared the ball from defensive fifty, there was always a winger running hard into space.
A beautiful performance by the Sydney defenders. They are superbly well drilled.
The Bombers absolutely dominated the first half of that quarter, without reward. Once the Swans got their hands on the ball they weren’t as wasteful as their opponents and managed a couple of late goals to extend the lead out to 38 points.
And considering the Bombers have only managed sixteen points in one half of football, that looks like a match winning lead.
Not a lot of standout performers for the Swans. It’s been a great team effort. Jetta and Armstrong have worked hard to find space, and are really exposing the Bombers lack of footspeeed. Grundy and Richards have been solid in the backline, as have all their colleagues. Bolton, Kennedy and Jack have worked hard at the stoppages.
For Essendon, Melksham, Watson and Heppell have been their leading possession getters, but no one has been all that effective.
At half time, it’s Sydney 8.6.54 leading Essendon 1.10.16
On another note, there were Essendon fans booing at the half time siren. I can’t see any reason to boo the umpires, so I guess they must be booing their own team.
Booing a young team that’s won eight of their first ten matches and is sitting in the top four. It’s okay to be frustrated, but some fans need a little perspective.

Now the Swans have it trapped in their forwardline. Hanneberry takes an intelligent mark on the fifty metre line, but his pass is cut off, and the Bombers get a chance to clear. Melksham finds some space on the wing and kicks it forward, but again the Sydney backline holds up.
Great work by the Swans to get back in numbers, The difference in the transition from back to forward tonight is really telling.

Again though Essendon are wasteful going forward. It winds up with Kennedy for the Swans.

That ends an outstanding quarter of football from the Swans. They’ve set up extremely well at stoppages and when clearing the ball from defence. The scoreboard might say eight scoring shots to six but in reality most of Essendon’s shots have had a high degree of difficulty and the Swans are finding it much easier to move the ball around.
Dennis-Lane, Jetta and Armstrong have been getting a lot of space outside the Essendon mids, who are badly missing Zaharakis’ footspeed.
At quarter time it’s Sydney 5.3.33 to Essendon 1.5.11

The Swans rebounding from defence has been outstanding. Dennis-Lane easily found space on the wing and he hits up Reid on the lead.
Reid is off target this time though. Should have kicked that.

Watson gets taken high by O’Keefe and finally Essendon win a clearance. Again the Swans look to clear but Dennis-Lane shanks his kick so badly under pressure it actually goes through for a behind to Essendon.

The Swans win yet another clearance, but this time they can’t find a target in the forwardline. Bombers clearance only goes as far as Everitt around half-forward for the Swans, and he kicks back to the goalsquare.
Reid comes across and takes a strong mark. Goes back and converts the easy shot.
The Swans now lead by four goals. Problems for the Bombers. They are getting smashed in the clearances.

The Bombers go forward, but again they can’t find a target in the forward 50. A quick shot is touched before it bounces through for a point. Sydney by 18 points.

The Swans clear again from a stoppage and Jack weights a nice pass to Mumford, who’s tarted in the forwardline.
Mumford from 50 just clears the line, and that’s four in a row for the Swans.

Watson given plenty of space for the Bombers on the wing. Finds Ryder on the half-forward flank. Ryder doesn’t look confident shooting from about 50 near the boundary. In fact it falls short and the Swans clear.
They’ve been very good when the balls goes to ground, the Swans. And at the clearances.

Some players to watch tonight:
Dyson Heppell makes his return from injury for the Bombers. He had a great start to his sophomore season and will be looking to pick up where he left off.
Michael Hurley and Stewart Crameri each kicked 0.3 in the Essendon forwardline last week, and will be looking to bounce back in better conditions tonight.
Shane Mumford is far and away the Swans best option in the ruck, and he’s still working his way back to full fitness. Will be interesting to see how he goes against Bellchambers and Ryder, particularly around the ground.
Josh Kennedy might spend some time in the forwardline tonight, with the Swans looking a bit weak down there.
Leroy Jetta is having a good season for the Bombers, while his second cousin Lewis has been a relevation for the Swans. They’ll be two of the quickest players out there tonight and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them go head to head on the wing.
