Port Adelaide will be looking to continue their winning run when they host Hawthorn at AAMI Stadium this afternoon. We’ll have live scores and commentary from the match at 4:40pm AEST.
After being put under a great deal of pressure a month ago, Port Adelaide has responded in the best way possible – by putting three wins in a row on the board.
A come from behind win against North Melbourne had many thinking it was a fluke. Beating Gold Coast on the road was seen as a match they should have won.
But last week’s win against Carlton had credibility behind it. While Carlton have been struggling since the injury to Marc Murphy, the Power still crunched the Blues in the midfield, including in contested possessions.
Jay Schulz has been in good form up forward this season with 22 goals from 8 games, including three games with three goals or more. He’s been passed fit to play despite bruised ribs last weekend.
If they play the same style of football from the last three weeks, then they may be able to take their biggest scalp of the season and bring themselves into the running for a spot in the finals.
Hawthorn comes off a stellar performance in Launceston last week against North Melbourne.
Everyone has been raving about Lance Franklin’s bag of thirteen goals last week – it was a wonderful reminder of how good he is, even though his accuracy had been questioned throughout the year.
Generally when he kicks a bag of 6 or more, he follows up the week after with three or four goals on most occasions. Buddy kicked eight last time these two played, which resulted in a black out as Hawthorn won in Melbourne by 155 points.
Something the Hawks will need to shake is a poor record at AAMI Stadium – in twelve matches against Port Adelaide, Hawthorn has won just the four with an average losing margin of 52 points
That may just a stat for stat’s sake, or it shows that the ground doesn’t suit their style. I wouldn’t be expecting the Hawks to be getting near that sort of territory today.
Losing Jordan Lewis through suspension is a big loss for the team– he’s been one of the stand outs for the Hawks in season 2012 averaging 22 disposals, 4 clearances, 3 tackles, 9 contested possessions and a disposal efficiency of 75%.
Hawthorn should be able to cover him. But, as we’ve seen in previous weeks, if they don’t use the ball well enough like Jordan Lewis does, they will get punished.
The visitors will go in as heavy favourites mainly because of last week’s win and a belief that it could be the start of the resurgence. But if Port Adelaide can start well, we could be in for a really tight and tough contest.
Live scores kick off at 4:40pm AEST. Join in the conversation below and give us your predictions for today’s game from AAMI Stadium, as Port Adelaide take on Hawthorn.

FINAL | Hawthorn 16.12 108 def. Port Adelaide 9.8 62
So Hawthorn come away with a comfortable win this evening in Adelaide with Brad Sewell, Sam Mitchell and Grant Birchall their standouts while Jarryd Roughead and Lance Franklin were involved in a lot of the play today.
Port Adelaide with plenty of work to do to get anywhere close to the top teams, but I think they knew that, even after their win last week.
Thanks for joining me today. Don’t forget, we’ll be live with Cameron Rose tomorrow for the Demons and Pies for the traditional Queen’s Birthday match.

FINAL | Hawthorn 16.12 108 def. Port Adelaide 9.8 62
Hawthorn have come away with a big win today on the road. The Hawks really worked hard everywhere around the ground and out ran, out muscled and out played Port Adelaide today. It says a lot when you want the footy more and there were many times in the match when that was the case. Not enough work rate from Port – but that’s something they can build on after last week’s hard-nosed effort against Carlton.
Hawthorn now 7-4

A consolation goal to Andrew Moore – who brought up his 19th disposal with that goal. Not the best handball from Broadbent – almost sold him into pressure. But Moore did well to get around an opponent and kick the goal.

THREE QUARTER TIME | PA 5.7 37 | Haw 12.11 83
Despite a tight and dour struggle for most of the quarter, late goals to Hawthorn have blown the game open now. Hawthorn are marching on their way to their 7th win of the year. Port Adelaide were actually quite good with their pressure in the quarter, but just couldn’t get forward. For 10 minutes, they hung tough… but then the dam walls broke and Hawthorn are well and truly away
