The AFL’s newest club hosts its second game at their new home ground, still chasing an historic first win in Sydney. Join us at 2:10pm AEST for minute-by-minute commentary and live score updates when the Giants host the Tigers at Skoda Stadium.
The true sleeping giant of AFL, the Richmond Football Club and their Yellow and Black Army, has stirred this season with some rousing victories against well-credentialed teams, but their run up the ladder was halted last week by an unexpected home loss to Fremantle.
Thus a follow up game against the Giants comes at the perfect time for the Tigers, who will be keen to atone and coach, Damian Hardwick, will ensure that complacency is not an issue.
The Richmond spearhead, ‘jumping’ Jack Riewoldt, is getting over an ankle injury, having kept it in ice the past week, but it looks like he is a certain starter as he chases after Buddy Franklin in the race for the Coleman Medal.
In the pre-season game at Manuka, Riewoldt led the Giants defence a merry dance, but on this occasion, co-captain, Phil Davis, will be there to stand Riewoldt, and that will be one of the key battles in the game.
At the opposite end, last year’s number one draft pick, Jonathon Patton, will debut as a key forward. After an interrupted pre-season, it’s unlikely he is anywhere near full match fitness, so we can’t expect too much from him, nevertheless, the debut of a number one draft pick always carries its own interest.
Over the last few weeks, we have become accustomed to the Giants staying with their opponents for the first half of footy before being overrun in the second half to the tune of 10 or 11 goals.
A key focus for the Giants’ coaching staff today will be in imploring their young charges to stay with their opponents for an additional quarter, as they continue their development at AFL level.
It’s worth noting that last season Richmond was one of the scalps that the then newest club, the Gold Coast Suns, earned, but we are talking about a different Tiger outfit today, with real potential to figure in the finals.
That being the case, there is no way the Tigers will let this one slip, especially with a midfield division in great form, including ruckman Ivan Maric and prolific onballer, Trent Cotchin.
It’s also worth noting that two of the Giants’ better players in the last few weeks, ruckman Jonathon Giles and midfielder, Stephen Coniglio, are out injured, although Dean Brogan and Rhys Palmer are handy replacements.
With too much to play for, Richmond will win this with or without Jumping Jack. The fighting fury from Tigerland to purr to a comfortable win.

Worthwhile recalling that on top of Jonathon Patton’s exciting debut, two NSW boys also debuted.
Sam Schulz, from Culcairn, started as a sub, while Mark Whiley, from Finley was there from the opening bounce and got some good early touches, he certainly went in hard after the footy.
Finley is not a bad recruitment spot for the AFL, recalling the brownlow medalist and premiership player, Shane Crawford, also hails from there.

Before I sign off on my live call, some 24 hours after the game finished, let me say that it was a real pleasure calling this young team and seeing Jonathon Patton on debut, backed up by Jeremy Cameron, one of the best on the ground.
Sydney footy fans have two beauties there, you are very lucky – this team will be something special in a few years time.
Thank you to all the League and soccer trolls for giving me a great post count.
Afterall, you too are part of this journey, the Giants exist as much for you as anyone else.

Well, until this weekend, the live calls of all games, in all sports have been sacred and off limits of trolling – so it beggars the question why things changed this weekend?
How far do you reckon you’d go jumping on the soccer and League live calls quizzing them about their pathetic crowds – I mean seriously – we’re talking absolutely pathetic crowds – the lowest of the low.
God – we could jump on every single game – and remind them of how pathetic their crowds are – even with their half decent crowds, we’d still be able to say: meh, not that good, to be perfectly honest – we could do it every weekend for ever and ever – we’d have a ball!!

Dozens of new teams have been formed over the past decade in different sports – for the most part – no one gives a damn, and the majority are lucky to survive more than 10 years.
The A-League has lost 4 teams alone the past 5 years, while League has had five different attempts at establishing a team on the Gold Coast, supposedly, League heartland.
One thing is for sure – the Suns and Giants will outlast them all.

But you know what, if someone is prepared to buy a membership for their pet, and the club gets the money who cares, except haters of course.

The four nations (and that rotates among several differnt countries)
The World Cup.
The chance to represent your Country.
The RU test in Melbourne last night really showed that there is interest in RL in Mlebourne just like there is interest in AFL in Sydney. The RU test could only get 30,000 and I bet there were 5,000 from north of the Murray and about 5,000 Welshmen. RL scored over 55,000 and only between 5 and 10 thou were from interstate.

It’s not important the interest in SOO – when are league people going to understand – it’s 3 games per year – in the grand scheme of things – it amounts to nothing.
And it’s the same two teams – year after year.
It’s a bit like saying horse racing is popular just because everyone has a bet on Melbourne Cup day.

Or even better play a test series against the NZer, in 50years, or in 250 years (if AFL still exists) the Chinese. You know you cant have a viable state series because the majority of the palyer come from Victoria.
Sorry TC but there is no need exagerate I can do it just as well as you can.

Stupid comparison. The Rugby union match was against the 6th or 7th placed team in terms of crowd drawing capacity, behind All Blacks, Springboks, Lions, England and Ireland. Re the crowd: I was at yesterdays game at Skoda Stadium. I walked around 3/4 of the ground checking out the new stadium and was a bit taken aback when the crowd announcement of over 7000 came out. I thought it was about 1/5 full at best, so about 5000, but I’ll take their word for it.
What I can say is that Sydney’s location of sporting arenas combined with the public transport on offer must greatly effect sporting attendances of all codes. I live on the northern beaches and it took me 4 buses, 4 trains, 5km of walking and about 10 beers to get to and from the ground. In all it was 4 plus hours of travel to see the game, its no wonder Melbourne gets bigger crowds for all their sporting events.

Don’t know where the AFL is sourcing these Chinese “athletes” from, but I’m assuming they would be from local soccer and basketball teams that have been invited by the AFL to try out, and lured by an all expenses paid trip to Australia for the two most promising athletes to come to the end of year combine.

Let us not forget that with the three rounds of byes, we had an unusual situation yesterday where there were no games played in Melbourne (there are two today), and the only two games yesterday were the two new clubs hosting matches.
The combined attendance was less than 18k which is disappointing by AFL standards, no doubt.
The Suns match drew 10,120, it’s on the low side, maybe even the lowest home attendance the Suns have drawn at Metricon, but then again we’re talking about a team that has never won a game at home.
Once the Suns manage to win even 5 or 6 home games per season, which aint’ asking a lot, I think we can expect their home game attendances to bounce back up to 14k to 15k very, very quickly – so no probs with the suns at all on that front.
The key thing amongst footy pundits at the moment is the overwhelming belief that the giants have done much better than the suns in building up their squads – we’ll know the truth of that next season, when the young Giants experience their own collective second-year blues.
Anyway, both teams got within 12 points yesterday, both were in the game till close to the end, both actually scored more goals than their opponents – so a great day of footy all round for the two expansion clubs.
11:39am
Cameron said | 11:39am | Report comment
Yes I have noticed alst of people mentioning the second year blues lately, almost as though it is some sort of right of passage for the new, young sides to go through. Personally I don;t quite understand why the Suns just could not have gone upwards upon a trajectory of improvement rather than go backwards, which they have seemed to heave done in 2012.
The scorelines for the games yesterday were a little deceptive, as Richmond had alot more of the ball in their forward half, and should really have won by about 10 goals if they had kicked straight. Ditto North. Too much inaccurate kicking from them made the Suns look good.

It’s amazing.
GWS get a modest 7k in driving rain, nothing to write home about it, a pretty low number by AFL standards, but League and soccer trolls come on here insisting the number is a fabrication!
Why should they care one way or the other?
Are they really more worried about their own pathetic crowds?
More worried that the Giants will outlive the Knights, Fury and GCU (guaranteed).
Can they see the writing on the wall?
Deep, deep down inside, they know where this clubs will be in 30 years?
Does it worry them? ON available evidence – you’d have to say it worries them heaps.
There’s an expression I remember hearing once: Smell the Fear.

If the AFL has developed a business model that allows it to place a second team in Sydney and help build it over many decades – then so be it.

I’d wait a good 20 years before feeling completely reassured. But below the surface – it’s a classic case of “smell the fear”.
At the end of the day – it’s still up to the new soccer club to reach 10,000 members – they might do it, then again, they might not.
Last year the newly formed Giants signed up 12,100 foundation members at $50 a pop – that’s no big deal – but let’s be honest, the Sydney rovers weren’t able to sign up a single foundation member.

Oh come on Cattery tellling jibers that support other codes to “smell the fear” is a little over the top. Even as a mainly AFL supporter, I can appreciate other sports, as I know you do too, without being over the top like you have just posted.
Anyway. I don’t think the fear you are refferring to implies they are fearful of the Giants taking away support of their respective sports, but they are reflecting a cynicism about this new side or sides if we throw the suns into the mix, and express this cynisism by targeting the new clubs’ weak points.
As for your 30 years point, they may or may not have the level of Swans support in Sydney. The Swans for a large part have built their supporter base over the last 15 years not just on consistant on field success, but also a reputation for good character – you rarely hear of any questionable behaviour eminating out of the Swans. I suspect the Giants will need to build a similar reputation to experience that support level. And with that, the Swans certainly havn’t taken over or dominate the Sydney sporting landscape, certainly nothing that would be indicitaive of your smell the fear comment if the Giants were to garner their level of support.

YOu are being far too kind.
New clubs are formed in all sorts of sports, all the time, soccer, basketball, baseball, whatever – and no one says boo about it – most have minimal support and will be lucky to see the decade out – but no one comes down on them at all – we just don’t care one way or the other.
But GWS? well, we are talking about a very special team there – that’s for sure!!
It’s a classic case of smell the fear.

Point taken. Yes in Australia when do mainly seem to be fixated AFL-NRL “were bigger and better than them” jibes because the two sports are embedded in olden day intercolonial rivalry, which seems to be well and truly alive today. Obsession with the outcomes of upcoming tv rights deals is another example of this.
However I’m sure there will be cynism about the new NRL club in Perth when that eventually happens, and certainly a second NRL club in Melbourne if that ever happens, and AFL supporters will be called “trolls” and be accussed of “smelling the fear” also when making what will be percieved by NRL keyboard warriors as unfair jibes about these new clubs.
And i’m sure many AFL and NRL fans will be on the football tab, banging away at the new West Sydney A-League club. it will recieve just as much cynism from non soccer fans as GWS have from trolls from other codes

Well I didnt but this is comparable to us basing our whole idea of the Aleagues crowds on GCUs poor attendance. We dont do that..well at least I dont.
On the other hand if you really want to push the issue I can point to the fact that its only round 12 in the AFL, and the aggregate attendance is over 3.16 million, at an average of 32,949. Let me offer you a comparison – this is almost as much as the 2012 NRL season to date(1.69 million @ 16.4k ave) and the entire last A-league season (1.53 million @10.9k ave) combined.
GWS 2012 Average – 14,939
Gold Coast 2012 Average – 13,296
Lets no dwell too much then on the following clubs:
(NRL clubs 2012 season to date, HAL 2011-2012 Season)
Canberra Raiders (NRL) – 10,241
Gold Coast Titans (NRL) – 12,467
Penrith Panthers (NRL) – 11,331
Sydney Roosters (NRL) – 11,418
Newcastle Jets (HAL) – 12,117
Sydney FC (HAL) – 11,861
CC Mariners (HAL) – 9,505
Melbourne Heart (HAL) – 9,082
Perth Glory (HAL) – 8,972
Adelaide United (HAL) – 8,829
Wellington (HAL) – 8,780
Gold Coast Untied (HAL) – 3,438
I could have saved some time and wrote every HAL club except Victory and Roar I suppose. So Half the NRL and most of the HAL is doomed I suppose on your own judgements. Bear in mind that every single one of the clubs listed above is older than GWS and Heart aside (IIRC), older than the Gold Coast.
Honourable Mentions to: Cronulla (13,859), Manly (13,826), Melbourne (14,020) who fall between the averages of Gold Coast and GWS.

I hadn’t realised NRL crowds were so pathetic – and we’re talking about some long lived teams there, they’ve been around.
And yet we have League trolls coming on here worrying about our two newest teams, both with crowds over 13K?
Doesn’t make much sense.
And that’s before we even get to the soccer trolls whose crowds are even worse.

Maybe we need to give A-League clubs time cattery, your quite quick to point out GWS needs 20-30 years to grow.A-League crowds are pretty impressive when you think about it.7 year old clubs, minimal media attention and i think we can honest its not the Premier League(the NRL and AFL’s leagues are the pinnacle of their respected sports).I’ll be happy when all A-League clubs are averaging 15-20,000 which is a possibility as the standard improves which it has been season to season.

Yes I agree that’s quite possible when the FFA simply decides to cut it’s start up clubs that get bad crowds off at neck and not stick it out to try and build their supporter base.
If the AFL did the same thing their average crowds would be fantastic!
So it seems as though the FFA go out of it’s way to artifically boost it’s average crowds, which we will no doubt see next year with those embarrassing clubs like GCU and NQF out of the way.
It’s like trying to solve the problem of unemployment. How do you boost employment figures? Easy. Just shoot the unemployed!
4:01pm
The_Wookie said | 4:01pm | Report comment
OF course you give them time.
Its worth noting that the cost of running an NRL team is much less than an AFL club, and the cost of running an Aleague team should in theory be even less, so crowds and memberships dont have to play as big a part in the operations of these clubs.

At this stage last season (101 games) the AFL had over 3.60m attendees for an ave of over 36,000 per game.
In 2012 the first 100 games have drawn 3.25m attendees for an ave of 32,500.
So in half a season the AFL have lost over 300,000 attendees or nearly 10% and don’t forget last year was 6% down in ave on the year before ( at seasons end).
Is it possible they could lose 600,000 attendees by the end of the season? In fact it is possible they will play 11more games this season and still draw a smaller aggregate than last season should this situation continue.
BTW update on the Giants att ave now down to just over 13,000 and GC down to 12,500.

Maybe, SCG construction, Kardinia Park contstruction, GC bad form, GWS new small team combined with bad weather as per the Swans, etc.
THe AFL had pretty well peaked as far as crowd averages go, they have expanded the game in new areas and it will take years to build up back to that average if ever.
Metricon, Skoda, Manuka, and ground in Tassie (?) all hold less than the AFL crowd average.
Give it time and it will build back up.
The reality is though for the crowd average to go back up, the Big Melbourne 4 and WCE and Crows must have good years

The first 11 rounds of last season produced 3,084,581. The first 11 rounds of 2012 have prodiced 3,163,135. Crowds are up 59,000 on last seasons aggregate. The average at the end of round 11, 2011 was 34,176. The average at the end of round 11, 2012 is down to 32.7k. These are things we know.
Your figures end in round 14 in 2011, and its disengenous to use number of games played. I know of no other statistifcal reference that doesnt judge this by round or season. If we get to round 14 and the aggregate is down on last year you may have a point. Its not.

see we KNEW and exepcted the game averages to be down – its happened to everyone when a new team is introduced. We knew there would be a certain amount of cannibilising of opposition support in NSW and QLD, and this was budgeted for by the AFL.
Yes the aggregate may well be down at the end of this round – bearing in mind this is the second of three rounds in a row that will feature only 6 games instead of 9 due to the mass byes being staged by 6 teams a round.

There are two competitions that focus on upping their numbers – I’m sure you know who they are – and if there is one league that doesn’t have to exaggerate its numbers – it’s the AFL!!

Greene was best for the Giants with 24.
Cornes and Davis had 8 and 7 marks, and they were instrumental in keeping Richmond at bay for long periods.

Richmond win by 12 points. They led all day and were clearly the better team, leading the clearances, inside 50s and were better with the ball around the ground, but as we can see from the scoreboard, they weren’t crash hot in front of goal.
It has to be said, I can’t remember too many gimmes being missed, it was more a case of the Giants defence limiting marks inside 50m and forcing the tiges to snap quickly out of packs and from distance.
At the other end Cameron and Patton took some terrific contested marks to help set up opportunities close to goal, Shiel was on the end of a couple of running goals, and all round the conversion from the angle and from distance from set shots was spot on for the giants.
The Giants kept themselves in the game with accurate goal kicking, a really good effort in such wet conditions, and with tackling pressure, leading the Tigers in tackles 87 to 69.

Richmond goes into the half time break with a 12pt lead, but the Giants actually outscored Richmond that quarter, helped along with two goals in the opening minute of the 2nd quarter.
Richmond quickly got back on top, with Deledio and Tuck dominating in the middle of the park, they ensured that they stayed camped in their forward 50, but crucially, the Giants defenders were ensuring there were no easy marks inside 50, and the tiges earned themselves only two goals in that period.
GWS responded with one of the best passages of play when Cornes and Ward combined to bring the footy to the top of the 50m, Cameron was there to collect the loose footy, handballed to Shiel running by for a very important running goal to keep them in the game.
Maric is doing well for Richmond in the ruck.
For GWS, Greene and Palmer have made sure their opponents have not had easy kicks, while Cameron and Patton have done well to get themselves 5 contested marks, a fantastic effort under the conditions.

It was a slow start for both teams, but the tiges were camped in their fwd 50 for the first 10 minutes and eventually forced the goal through.
They followed up very quickly with two more and it was the case of Richmond adapting to the wet conditions and using the footy better.
But something very special happened around the 20min mark when Patton took two contested marks inside 45 seconds, with the second of them leading to the Giants’ second goal, as they evened up the contest in the second half of the quarter.
Given the conditions, a good game of footy, with the Giants having worked their way into it, but tiges deserve the lead.
