Hansen hails mental strength of All Blacks

The performance may not have pleased All Blacks coach Steve Hansen but his team’s character left him a happy man after they left it late to down a gallant Ireland in Christchurch on Saturday night.
A Daniel Carter drop goal with seconds left handed the All Blacks a 22-19 triumph that they barely deserved at a bitterly cold Addington stadium.
After a comprehensive 32-point win a week earlier, they produced a bumbling display which saw them escape with their unbeaten record against Ireland only just intact.
“We certainly didn’t play as well as we would have liked but we showed some really special character to hang in to win the game,” he said.
Hansen said the team’s big players stepped up in the closing stages to pull the game out of the fire.
“We had a plan everyone did their job under extreme pressure.
“It’s a game were probably shouldn’t have won. Plenty of young men and some older men have been reminded about what Test rugby is about,” he said.
Tries to halfbacks Conor Murray and Aaron Smith and a conversion and four penalties apiece to Jonathan Sexton and Carter esnured the match came down the the wire.
The All Blacks found a determined Irish defence difficult to break down as the tourists made 138 tackles, missing just seven in the match and earning Hansen’s admiration.
“They played with a lot of conviction, a lot of energy, a lot of urgency.”
Ireland fed off the home side’s frustration which led to the All Blacks being hit with 11 penalties which Hansen attributed to how they had prepared for the match.
“You just don’t give away stupid penalties like we did tonight if you’re in the right zone.”
Hansen reserved special mention for Chiefs flanker Sam Cane who made several strong runs after coming on for an injured Kieran Read at halftime.
The 20-year-old says he feared his Test debut would not end on a winning note until Carter’s late heroics.
“I was on the bottom of a ruck and looked up and saw that fly over – it was a bit of relief, I was stoked.”

Good for us non-AB fans to see the invincibles can be lulled into same deadhead space we reserve for ‘non’ games. Tapping into that will become the mission for anyone involved with the Quatre-Nations.
ps: Just can’t bring myself to believe the phrase ‘Rugby Championship’ in that context.

Don’t discount the Irish playing a big hand in the way the All Blacks played. Much like the final where the French played with so much intensity that we had no time or space to create anything. That is what a real test match is like. I’m not happy with the way we played, but i don’t think it was one sided, they did not let us play well.
I also thought Cane was awesome as soon as he came on the paddock. He broke the advantage line on his first two carries and he nailed his tackles, for a 20 year old in that type of pressure situation i thought he couldn’t have done much more. Give the man a start on the open-side with McCaw at 6 and Read at 8.

Very true re the Shamrocks lifting themselves, great to see, great for Rugby, but still sub-par from the ABs. Hansen could (and possibly should, the clubs would appreciate it) rest everyone and still put out a great team, would love to see Jamie have a run as a back rower, don’t know why he isn’t in the mix.

Six – The ‘Quatre Nations’ has a way better sound than the RC which to me sounds like some average Joe run around the park kids comp.

Morning BBoB,
Thats what I thought too, also a bit pretentious on another level. Maybe India-Pacific Ch? Southern Nations Ch? Antipodean Ch? All South Ch? Southern Cross Ch? Demi Monde Ch? 30th Parallel Ch? Here’s hoping they do some research.

the ARU advertises IT as the Castrol Edge Rugby Championship
NZRU – Investec Rugby Championship
SARU – The Castle Rugby Championship
Argentina – The Personal Rugby Championship

Also liked to thank the irish for the game they played last night. Think they brought the all blacks and their fans back to earth. The all blacks before the world cup were the biggest scalp in rugby, now they are world champions it’s doubly so. We all black fans have got to get used to teams bringing everything they’ve got to every all black game.

much credit to the Irish, now one can really see how they beat the wallas last year, the best performing team of the 3 NH thats playing the SH at the moment, any other team would have succumbed to that pressure, just shows the guts of the ABs, Richie was into everything not sitting back and waiting for someone to do the hard yards, make a tackle then jump in and pinch the ball, he is still the best 7 running around

I thought Richie had a shocker to be honest even though he had plenty of effort. But 3 or 4 basic handling errors that put us under pressure, no dominance at the breakdown and was outplayed by his opposite O’Brien .

I agree. I was at the game and haven’t seen a replay but that’s the first time I’ve every thought they should have pulled McCaw at the 50min mark. WOuld have been interesting to see what Hanson would have done if Read hadn’t gone off.

He had a number of strong carries, but his handling was poor and he struggled with the shift to No.8 especially at the kick-offs.

Yeah he made some pretty basic errors, but hit twice as many rucks as any other player on field, had a good last 10 minutes, which was important given how the game was poised in that final 10.

richie had a blinder. ok he knocked on 4 times but other than that he was a work horse. was tackling like a demon and securing most of the rucks. richie was at fault but he wasnt the only one. richie may not have had an ideal game but work wise he did more than any other AB forward in this game. had samCane started i imagine he would’ve had a similar work load.
said it last week to some aus supporters and i’ll say it again never never underestimat the irish. thats why aus lost to them last year and why AB’s almost did.
this wasnt a case of the AB’s playing badly this was a case of the irish not letting the AB’s dominate and dictate the game. AB’s were never allowed to play their A game and had to react to ireland deciding how it was going to be played and at what pace. ireland were accurate and brutal on D. had sexton got the penalty when dagg was sent off the game would’ve been over. there was no way the AB’s were gonna cross the irish line. also all the handling errors stopped the AB’s from building any momentum and that was due to irish pressure.
much respect for the irish. i almost wanted them to win as they were tireless in defence and played the better team game. AB’s learnt a big lesson and that is every team can beat them (on any given sunday) if they’re allowed to.
i hope the rookies have learnt what test rugby truly is. scrum suffered big time when benFranks came on. wow ireland were punishing us. savea went missing in the 2nd half and played average in the 1st. guildford may have cheated for holding that player back but based on his effort and work load i would keep him in the squad for next week. outplayed savea. savea i would give another chance but be prepared to sub him if he doesnt fire.
thank you ireland for giving the AB’s a good kick in the but. AB’s were lucky to win, but then u make your luck

Kuruki;Thomson was strong last night I thought.Moving Mccaw to 6 would be hard on him and possibly our issues at the breakdown could be laid at Richie’s feet and not elsewhere?

Lol cover the other eye, the Irish 3 was clearly backpedaling to screw it.
Always dodgy when one Prop has a straight back and is pushing and the other is almost standing up with a bent back…….

That’s funny. Other people say Healy wasn’t pushing.
So neither Irish prop pushed, but the scrum still spun….
There’s another theory that says Owens shouldn’t have given a 5m scrum after first failed drop kick that was touched by O’Brien. NZ players were offside…

PeterK – this is a pet peeve of mine and ref was right to penalise them. ireland #3 prop wasnt moving forward and just pivoting on the spot. if your gonna turn the scrum then your all front row should be going forward. annoys me when team get away with a wheel of the scrum without getting forward dominance.

i don’t mind everyone knocking Richie…he made some important carries in the second half and kept his cool. ok so he dropped the ball a few times. i think we learnt some valuable lessons from that game. Still more work required at the breakdown.
you can guarantee there will be improvements at Hamilton….and they will be applied in the Four Nations, RC ..

Richie McCaw : butter fingers ,someone who is clumsy with objects, and tends to let them slip out of their hands. Someone who can’t hold anything without dropping it. Great Richie, you dropped the ball, how many times? Nice going, butter fingers.
