New Pumas jersey spits in the face of tradition

As I browsed through the rugby news this morning, I stumbled upon something that seemed like blasphemy.
The sky blue-and-white hoops of the Argentina jersey, donned by the Pumas since at least the 1960s, had been replaced by something else.
A predominantly white jersey with blue shoulders.
I can’t help but think this move was entirely the fault of Nike, rather than the UAR.
How can a team so passionate be willing to throw away decades of history, pride and heritage in favour of a jersey that appears to resemble the Uruguay team more than the Pumas?
I’d be willing to put money on the players’ disdain of the jersey.
The opinions of Argentina fans online confirmed my belief that the jersey is also wildly unpopular among the fans.
Would Agustin Pichot, in his passion-fuelled and fervent 2007 World Cup speech that began with “this is more than a jersey!”, approve of this new move?
I’d assume not.
What Nike has done is completely spit in the face of tradition.
Then again, we’re not exactly unacquainted with Nike’s ways.
The 2011 black England jersey sparked much controversy and was viewed as some as Nike’s attack on Adidas, the manufacturers of the All Blacks jersey.
Unfortunately, we’ve come to the point where the decisions of large corporate sponsors and manufacturers are the be-all and end-all.
If the players don’t get a say, why would the fans?
We’ve also had the lime green of the Highlanders and the Bulls’ pink away jersey.
Honestly who makes these decisions?
The yellow, blue and maroon represent the provinces of North Otago, Otago and Southland.
What does lime green represent?
The Bulls’ pink jersey looks more like something worn by the lead singer of a 1980′s glam metal band.
The All Black of New Zealand has been around since the early 1900s and is nothing short of a legacy.
It is a jersey that is respected and steeped in tradition.
Now, imagine if it was thrown out in favour of black-and-white hoops, or a green-and-gold jersey?
There would probably be riots.

Please change the title to “PUMAS” jersey, not Wallabies. That aside, I agree, this is a disgrace. It’s the same template as the Brisbane Broncos – which in and of itself isn’t the issue but the lack of hoops is a joke. Typical disrespect from Nike.

I don’t or didn’t like the striped Pumas jersey which made them look like a club team. However if they’re going to change it then out of white and light blue it would make sense to change it to light blue as no major team has that colour.

The Under 20s wore light blue. They might as well call themselves Uruguay. Uruguay might not be a major team but they play a lot of lower level rugby against Argentina and are rivals. As for the white jersey odd considering that is the colour of the country they despise, England.

National rep jerseys (and here in Aust the state rep teams Waratahs & Reds) have been more commonly a single colour jersey, with (as kingplaymaker notes above) the hoops being a jersey for clubs & schools. Of the older rugby playing nations, Argentina provided the exception using hoops, but presumably that wasn’t so much about building a rugby style hoops jersey, but a desire to mirror/wear the blue & white bars design of their national flag.
I may be incorrect, but I was under the impression that this jersey was re design just for the game against Italy, and the Pumas will be wearing their traditional jersey in the new Rugby Championship.

That’s exactly what I read too, the traditional hoops should be back for the 4 Nations.
Incidentally, the image at the top of this article is the change strip, the home one being much the same but with the colours inverted. Quite when they’re likely to wear the blue kit, after arranging matches against Les Bleus and the Azzurri I do not know!
This was probably just a marketing idea to see if fans were receptive to the idea of a move away from hoops. They weren’t and so the hoops return.
Personally, I love the Argentina strip for its club rugby styling, and have been on the lookout for a retro-type one for years.

On the whole that’s correct. I can recall 3 of the inaugural RWC invitees wearing hooped jerseys. Japan, Zimbabwe and Argentina. Can’t remember when Japan got rid of the plain hoops but they still have it albeit in a stylised fashion to some degree, dont they?

Guys – This nike jersey is only being used for the tests against Italy and France. For The Rugby Championship, Argentina will wear the adidas jersey that is more traditional. Personally though, I don’t mind the Nike jersey.

Alan surely it would make more sense to have a light blue jersey with white shoulders rather than the other way round, given that England play in white?

New strip, new comp, new future? If it involves lolly from the providers then that is the reality. Looks quite smart, do they have an away strip as well?

Sixo, their U20s side has been wearing the reverse of this strip at the JWC (so sky blue, with white shoulders).
Personally, I think the Puma’s hoops is one of the best strips in world rugby, I’d hate to see it gone forever….

Luckily the sky blue and white hoops are back for the 4 nations, as Alan Nicolea said above. The hoops seem to be copping a bit of criticism in these comments due to the fact that it resembles a club side. I’m pretty sure though that the hoops are meant to represent the flag of Argentina though, just like the Argentina soccer team that has the vertical stripes.

Not as bad as the revolting grey Hurricanes change strip. If it’s a marketing ploy I can’t see a lot of fans lining up to buy that one!

Good looking jersey, buts no Argie Bargie. as an AFL fan i’ve never understood why other codes (league being to worst culperet) need to change strips yearly.

marketing i guess: more jerseys = more fans likely to buy the new home jersey, the new away one, the new 2nd away one etc…Football teams (soccer) are the worse/best when it comes to that. All european teams have at least 3-4 different sets changed at the start of every season. money talks. I read that “Manchester United sells more jerseys in a year than every NFL team combined does”. ouch
