We’ll cope with Stewart loss, says Barrett

NSW assistant coach Trent Barrett says NSW have the depth to cope with the loss of Glenn Stewart for next month’s State of Origin decider.
Stewart was diagnosed with a partial tear to the medial ligament in his left knee late on Tuesday evening that will sideline him for between three and four weeks – ruling him out of selection for the July 4 encounter at Suncorp Stadium.
Barrett said earlier that the 2011 Clive Churchill Medal winner would be given up until the eve of the game to prove his fitness with the early prognosis claiming it may only be a strain.
But the club confirmed on Tuesday night that Stewart would miss up to a month.
Barrett admitted earlier that the 2011 Clive Churchill Medal winner’s unavailability would be a huge blow as the Blues look to win a first series since 2005.
“We’ll be okay but he’d be a huge loss. He’s a very important part of our side,” Barrett said.
Melbourne’s Ryan Hoffman and St George Illawarra’s Beau Scott would be candidates to replace Stewart, as is his Manly teammate Tony Williams who is recovering from a back injury sustained in Origin I.
“Ryan’s there and there’s also Beau Scott who has been there and done a terrific job for us before and T-Rex may be fit,” Barrett said.
“We’ve got some options.”
NSW back-rower Luke Lewis admits the injury to Stewart is a body blow for the Blues.
“We’ve got a great bunch of blokes and everyone gets on well and it wouldn’t be the same without him.”
“He’s played a lot of footy and played in a lot of big games and has been a vital part of the NSW team.”

I’ve never really seen the appeal in Glenn Stewart anyway. If anyone ever asks “What will Brett Stewart look like in ten years?” then he’s your go-to man. For State of Origin? Not so much.
Get Shaun Fensom in there. Hoffman has been found wanting at rep level in the past and Beau Scott has been woeful this year.

Gareth, it is obvious you have not watched Glenn Stewart games. Ask his team mates what he means to them! Ryan Hoffman could do the job I am sure but Ryan Hinchcliffe should be considered as he is playing well in 2nd row and he is also handy as a hooker if needed.

Gotta agree with you their Charles
Glen Stewart plays like another 5/8 on the right side at Manly and the Blues were just starting to gel with him so it’s definitely a big loss for NSW..

Stewart is a great club player but I can only remember him playing one great origin game. If it was off the bench and maybe in 2010 but don’t quote me.
Stewart is a great ball player but NSW haven’t been using him in that role. For Manly he spends a part of his time in tight and then drifts out wider on the right to ball play. For NSW he has been exclusively used 3 in from the right and not as a ball player at all.
While I agree that he’s a better player than say a Hoffman or Creagh type the role he plays in NSW he could be ably replaced by them.
I’d put Luke Lewis back in the 13 and play Williams if fit off the bench, if Williams is unavailable I’d go Mateo.

I agree with you on Stewart. Manly have him on the right edge trying to create overlaps with his ball playing ability. NSW seem to have him taking inside balls on angled runs back into the centre. So realistically for that role you could easily replace him with either Hoffman or Scott. I’d go for Hoffman but Scott would bring a fair bit of aggression which is basically our game plan at the moment. He’d happily get up and in the faces of the Maroons.
Im not sold on Mateo. He is a confidence player and when he is on he is on. But how confident will he be on debut in an Origin decider??? Worried he would bring his usual 3 or 4 handling errors when he is off.
T-Rex should only be considered if he turns out for Manly this weekend. Apparently he is a slight chance.

You may be right about blooding Mateo in a decider, I just really rate him and have for a long time. There was a time when he was at Parra that if he was playing 6 they’d win, if he was out they’d get done. I’m not a Parra or Warriors fan.
He gets tagged sometimes as being lazy but I don’t see it, more that sometimes he’s more effective than others. He can play a variety of roles. He has points in him as well – I think NSW need to think about that as an option off the bench considering what happened in Game 3 last year.
I’d forgotten about Scott. He’s another of my faves but he’s missed a bit of footy with injury and doesn’t look to be at his best. He is an Origin type player.
Gee I hope T-Rex is fit though…

I reckon Uate and Morris in particular have missed a couple of chances drifting in when Glenn was about to offload. Chances that would have been snapped up by Jamie Lyon had he been there but as I said I think they were just starting to gel with his style of play on the right side. Luke Lewis had a much bigger impact off the bench in game two than he did starting in game one so i’d keep him there and would be a bonus if T Rex is fit..

Good comments Barry and there is merit with Lewis as he plays best when he plays for 80 minutes!

T-Rex or T-Dog as I now call him won’t play in the 3rd SOO. Ricky Stuart has said he must play this Sunday against the Roosters to be a selection chance. Both the Manly medical team and the coach have said he is not ready for a return. They are aiming for him to play his first game back against Parramatta on the 8th July.

This is the team I would go with:
1. Brett Stewart
2. Michael Jennings
3. Jarrod Hayne
4. Josh Morris
5. Brett Morris
6. Todd Carney
7. Jamie Soward
8. Timothy Grant
9. Robbie Farah
10. James Tamou
11. Luke Lewis
12. Greg Bird
13. Paul Gallen
14. Aaron Woods
15. Anthony Watmough
16. Ryan Hinchcliffe
17. Anthony Minichiello (very competitive player in form who would play havoc around tired forwards)
