Sport and television has always been a successful mix. What makes a sport telecast special? It has to be the theme music. Today, I present to you the top 10 sport telecast intro songs.
(10) Are you ready for some football/NBC Sunday Night Football Intros
Rock and American sport go well together. Both intros just represent the American idea of NFL Football. ESPN’s “Are you ready for some football” was at the cornerstone of football broadcasting as it was one of the first rocking themes (Part of ABC’s Monday Night Football). While not the best, they both get you pumped for the game.
(9) Nine’s NRL “That’s my team”
Ok it’s not an original but it speaks to the fan. That Hoodoo Gurus remake was a simple ode to the fan who screams “THATS MY TEAM!” (for better or for worse). Again, there are better but none seem to speak to the fan as much as this incarnation of a sports theme.
(8) World in Union
A simple song explaining the ethos of the game of heaven, I say no more.
(7) Sky Sports F1 Theme
A newie but a goodie. The song “Just Drive” is a pleasant intro compared to other motorsport intros as it reflects simplicity and nostalgia. Combine this with the nice walk through F1 history and it reminds you why you love F1 (if you are a supporter).
(6) BBC Match of the Day
40 years and still going strong. The chirpy and vibrant intro has been a fixture of British television for a long time. Just makes watching football fun.
(5) Simply the Best
Ok maybe it was an ad, but it still told viewers why you should watch rugby league. The Tina Turner anthem gave even the most ardent anti-NRL fans Goosebumps. It gets you singing really easily and makes you love league.
(4) Holy Grail
An emotional reminder of what sporting teams crave each season. Its use by Channel Ten in its AFL coverage gets the hairs standing up off your skin. It is adaptable as it can be transformed and used by any other sport to describe their goals for a season.
(3) Up There Cazaly
The ode to people who love Aussie rules. A simple song that describes what makes the game of Australian Rules fantastic. The chorus of “Up there Cazaly/in there and fight/out there and atem/show em your might” is the ethos of footy and will be for future generations.
(2) The Chain BBC F1 Intro
Partly because of my fondness for Fleetwood Mac but also because it fits within its chosen sport the best. The bass line equals the nervy build up to any race while the guitar solo like the start of the race, is a crazy explosion of passion. 30 years on, Chain has yet to outdate its chose sport and gets the blood pumping before every race.
(1) Channel Nine Cricket Theme
Cricketers have come and gone, matches have been won and lost yet the Channel Nine cricket theme still speaks true. It wins not just for its longevity but for the fact it has gone through many variations yet still it sounds so damn good! Couple that with Bill Lawry’s “Bowled ‘im” and highlights of yesteryear, it encapsulates the joy of sport.

List is missing ‘NBA on NBC’ and ‘Hockey Night in Canada’, both of which are much better than most that have been presented, and Greg Champion’s ‘That’s the thing about Football’ has always been a favourite of mine.

That’s the thing about football? is that the ditty with the line “catch a tram to my favourite ground”?
I liked that song it coincided with my uni days in Melbourne and brief flirtation with watching AFL footy. reminds me of good times:)

That’s the one. And unlike Holy Grail or Simply the Best, it is a footy song.

-I loved the terrestrial music of cricket in the 1980′s and mid 90′s in Australia. When Richie would go “and the 2 teams for todays test match”.
-Also loved the friday night lights in the USA, and the monday night football in USA to the music was good.
-WWF wrestling in the hook hogan era was always exciting too.
-I like the south africa test rugby music and super 15 music too in sty africa is good too at present really tense test match style music, especially during the 2009 british lions tour.

Happy to see Match of the Day in there. That music together with the Champions League orchestral music just screams”football is on!” to me. From an Australian point of view Number one is spot on, so many of us grew up laughing along and imitating Billy Birmingham imitating the Commentary Team, especially Maxy Walker and the Maxiphone introduction to WWOS:) Of note for those of us who grew up in the 90s, you might be familiar with the D-Generations, Late Show on ABC, they had a segment where they’d re-dub an old cop show staring a rather rotund Lucky Grills into a comedy called Bargearse. The theme music for the original show: called ‘Bluey’ is on this youtube clipFFWD to minute 1:27. You might find it interesting in light of this article:)

This is a bloody great article. I’ve always tried to sell to my buddies the importance of great lead-in music to big sporting events and I’ve always been widely panned. Why wouldnt you want to get the blood flowing? To read this is a beautiful thing!
The NBA Finals theme song gets me shadow boxing before tip-off each game. Channel Nine’s cricket theme gets me nostalgic.
Channel Ten’s old AFL intro music was super-ballsy also.
A few years back, Sky Sports used to play Andreas Johnson’s ‘Glorious’ for the cricket broadcasts which was a cracker. And who can go past Kasabian’s ‘Fire’ for the EPL.
My girlfriend once remarked about some sports theme songs that ‘it makes it sound like something important is about to happen.’ I’ve used that as my measuring stick for any network’s attempt at intro tunes ever since!

Oh the cricket intro is the best and the old Wide World of Sports theme was great too.I also like Kasabian for the EPL theme.Heres another topic i always thought it would be cool to see commentators from a code to commentate another code.I’d personally love to see Dennis Commeti call a Socceroos match,Bill Lawry calling a Rugby match.

Hi John – darn it, someone got in with the ELP “Fanfare” reference already…! A classic tune. Also agree the Nine cricket theme never, ever, EVER gets too old. Quite like “World In Union” and yes, the equally sweeping, orchestral “Champions” theme for Europe’s biggest club football competition also, as others have said, sets the stage for something really special.
My only other thought (and feel free to correct me if I am wrong…) was Nine (?) using Steppenwolf’s “Born To Be Wiild” for a number of years back in the 80s when the AGPIM (Adelaide Grand Prix In Melbourne) really WAS in Adelaide…

Yep, Fanfare For The Common Man should be at the pointy end of this list for sure alongside Nine’s Cricket theme and That’s My Team. And I always preferred What You Get Is What You See to Simply The Best for some reason.
Also, two summers ago one of the cable TV channels in the UK had Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful soundtracking the ads for a Darts Championship, whoever had that brainwave deserves a knighthood.
Great story idea!
