Two teams at opposite ends of the NRL’s annual mid-table log jam do battle tonight when the North Queensland Cowboys take on the Canberra Raiders at Dairy Farmers Stadium. Join us for live scores and commentary from 5.30pm AEST.
It’s a sign of the times in the NRL that, despite the fact these sides are only four points apart on the competition table, the Cowboys will start this as heavy favourites.
North Queensland are favoured as NRL finals contenders while the Raiders are tipped by most to miss out on the top eight.
Indeed, the Cowboys have had the much better of this fixture in recent times, winning four of the last five clashes, and they’ll be helped by the warm Townsville climate, which will no doubt comes as a shock to a team like the Raiders who play their own home games in sub-10° conditions.
North Queensland will, however, be missing their inspirational co-captain and forward leader, Matthew Scott, whose mother sadly passed away on Thursday night.
His replacement is yet to be announced, but with Ashton Sims also on the sidelines, even more responsibility will fall on the shoulders of James Tamou to turn in a big performance, especially up against a front row featuring Origin-level players like David Shillington and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs.
Still, the Cowboys have two X-factors in the form of playmakers Johnathan Thurston and Matthew Bowen, and with hard-running back rowers and outside men that can easily sniff out a try — Ash Graham is the leading try scorer in the NRL — they’re always a chance of posting points when close to the line.
For the Raiders, we’ll watch closely the continuing development of Josh Dugan as a five eighth, the talented fullback having been thrust into that role due to the Raiders’ excessive injuries in the halves. He was hot and cold in his first two performances — probably more cold than hot — but his talent is undeniable and, if things click, the Raiders could surprise the Cowboys this evening.
Will the Cowboys hold strong at their home fortress and take an important step towards a top four finish, or will the Raiders spring a big upset and shore up their own finals credentials? Join us from 5.30pm for live score updates and debate on our live blog, and be sure to give us your opinion in the space below if you’re watching.

Ha, you’re right, close! You said Thurston MoM too, who did you think should have got it in the end? I thought he took a backseat to the other playmakers tonight, which is definitely a good thing for the Cowboys.

Full-time: Cowboys 40 – Raiders 18
A dominant first half from the Cowboys has sealed this one. The Raiders came out and performed better in the second half, though the Cowboys definitely took their foot off the gas pedal.
The big news out of this match though, at least for Raiders fans, is the injury to Josh Dugan, who was taken from the field with what appears to be a broken ankle. Dugan joins a long list of injured halves for the Raiders, and is another huge loss for the Green Machine who just can’t seem to take a trick when it comes to their playmakers.
Matty Bowen was probably the best on field for the Cowboys alongside Aaron Payne, and Bowen will have done his Origin chances no harm tonight.

79′ TRY COWBOYS! Scott Bolton crosses under the posts running another good line off Aaron Payne from dummy half, and again it’s too easy for NQ, putting an exclamation point on this win. That will take us to full-time as Matty Bowen lines up the conversion.

One funny moment from that half was when Aaron Payne broke away after a loose ball from the Raiders. I would have backed Canberra’s outside men to run him down within 30m, but with Dugan the closest to him, Payne ran him about 60m and Dugan still couldn’t catch him. Not sure if Dugan is carrying an injury but I thought he was faster than that! At the end, Payne actually started pulling away from Dugan and he was forced to make a diving attempt at tackle, at which he came up short. Eventually Croker caught Payne 10m from the line.

Half-time: Cowboys 30 – Raiders 6
After a dream start from the Raiders in which they hit the lead after four minutes, it has been all the Cowboys as they scored 30 unanswered points against a brittle Canberra defence. It looked like Canberra’s left-side defence was going to be the target early in the half, but as time went on it became clear that the Cowboys weren’t going to have any problem scoring right across the park. Canberra are deadset terrible both in attack and defence.
Cowboys, after a shaky start, have done everything right. Bowen, Thurston and Thompson all look dangerous with the ball in hand and likely to create something at any time. Not sure how the Raiders can turn this around — we could see a cricket score here tonight.

Good evening footy fans and welcome to tonight’s coverage of Cowboys vs. Raiders on The Roar.
Team changes:
Ricky Thorby comes into the starting line-up for Matthew Scott after the sad news of his mother’s passing earlier this week.
For the Raiders, Bronson Harrison has been ruled out with injury, so he will drop off the extended bench, with Trevor Thurling playing his 100th first grade game.
