Cooper to fight for Wallaby No.10: Deans
Related coverage
Wallabies coach Robbie Deans issued a stern warning to Quade Cooper and his other injured stars that they can’t expect to walk straight back into the starting side for August’s Rugby Championship.
Stand-in five-eighth Berrick Barnes starred in Australia’s 3-0 whitewash of Wales with two man-of-the-match performances and Deans admits Cooper has his work cut out to win back the No.10 jersey.
Cooper was told by Wallaby medical staff before the June Tests to get more fitness into the knee he ruptured in last year’s World Cup semi-final, however he’s expected back on the field for Queensland’s Super Rugby clash against Melbourne on Friday night.
Deans welcomed the likely headache for the chief playmaker position and hopes James O’Connor, Drew Mitchell, Joe Tomane and even Lachie Turner can also strengthen the Wallabies heading into the Bledisloe Cup and Rugby Championship opener against the All Blacks on August 18.
“I hope so,” said Deans of the selection dilemma between Cooper and Barnes.
“That’s fantastic. It’s great. It’s optimal.
“When (Cooper) left camp there was a series of benchmarks he had to achieve in order to return to play. I understand he’s ticked some of them, I don’t know if he’s ticked all of them yet.
“The next month will be key for them (injured players) no doubt.
“The good thing is no one will be able to amble back into the group now.
“They’re not waiting until they’re called to be selected before they get serious about it, they’re going to have to actually convince people that they’re ready to go prior to re-entry.”
Adam Ashley-Cooper said his NSW teammate Barnes would thrive on the chance to battle it out with Cooper for the No.10 jersey and believes Australia can receive a major boost from any in-house showdown.
“Absolutely you want to have that competition for spots because it only brings out the best in individuals when we’ve got all that talent competing for the one spot at training.
“You’re not only challenging yourself you’re challenging the blokes around you, and that’s how we’re going to become No.1 in the world,” said Ashley-Cooper.
“He’s a good director and he’s well organised but the best thing about Barnsey is he’s an absolute competitor. He just loves the contest and he’ll never give up.”
Deans was encouraged by the Wallabies ability to win tight matches against Wales, despite the host of stars sitting on the sidelines.
Kurtley Beale made his return in Saturday’s 20-19 win at Allianz Stadium and will be better for the run, while Mitchell and Turner trained with the Wallabies in Sydney in the lead-up and will add depth in the outside backs.
O’Connor has recovered from liver damage but is still troubled by a hamstring injury as he fights to prove his fitness for the Rebels.
“I hope they’re all available to us because they do have the ability to unlock sides,” said Deans.
“To beat teams like the All Blacks and South Africa you have to be able to do that.
“To add that X-factor back into the group is good, because there’s been some good solidity around the rest of the group.”

Hopefully one of the benchmarks is to learn to tackle in the no. 10 channel and tackling low. I want to see him back in the green and gold but not at the expense of our current defensive structures.

Dingo should always be doing this. Why now? Is he saying in the past that players could just “…amble back into the group now.”
“They’re not waiting until they’re called to be selected before they get serious about it, they’re going to have to actually convince people that they’re ready to go, prior to re-entry.” As opposed to other times where players didn’t need to convince anyone that they were serious or ready to go?
Who cares about their re-entry either? Surely if they have a problem with re-entry it’s a private matter for the team doctor to sort out

Evidently Robbie has the optimal position in which to own the reality and let his team play what’s in front of them

Why not Barnes at 12 and Cooper at 10? Quade’s brilliance and Berrick’s solidity. A perfect foil! Imagine a 12 that actually passes the ball.
Biggest concerns though are TPN and Palu. Both appear to be passengers. Moore should be a definite starter and Higgers move to 8 with Dennis or Mowen on the side.
Odd though, that the Waratahs, all 9 of them, played quite well with the Wallabys. Is Foley really that crap of a coach?

Agree re Barnes and Cooper.
You have no idea whatsoever on Palu though. Look at the stats, Palu broke 4 tackles, most runs, hit the rucks hard, splintered a welsh maul by himself, made a lot of tackles. His work rate far higher than Higgs who got subbed.
Mowen is a journeyman. Dennis is slightly better than Mowen.
Before the complaint was Palu couldnt play 80, he plays hard and high work rate for 80 when he is given the opportunity, and no credit.
TPN outside of the lineout issues (which Moore had and could of been the jumpers problem) broke tackled, smashed them in tackles etc. Moore had little impact when he came on, not noticable at all.

PK ton was terrible at the LO and was fortunate Pocock and others cleaned up a couple of more poor throws. Moore missed one from what I saw which Sharpe got a hand too.
Ton general play has been much better, he needs to keep it up.
Palu has become a worker with less impact. He had a few turn overs though and missed/passive tackles . I prefer him as a destruction machine playing 50mins than a worker, the former are much harder to find.
Higgers hasn’t been as good as I had hoped in the loose but his LO work has been superb, has work to do but his running on the edges is still dangerous

What about:
cooper(10)
o’conner(11)
Tapuai (12)
barnes (13)
diggers (14)
Beale (15)
I know it seems a shame to put Barnes at 13, I know its a difficult position that to my knowledge he hasn’t played, but hes a solid defender, good runner and at least can pass, attributes a lot of our other 13′s seem to be lacking.

Exactly. I’m tired of reading about this. The best arrangement of the australian backline was against france in november 2010. Halves : Genia and Cooper, centres Barnes and Ashley Cooper, Wingers O Connor and Mitchell, Fullback Beale. It positively “zinged”.
If Quade gets all flakey then they can hook him ad move Banres into fly half. It allows us to both have the x factor (cooper) to creat things and solidity (banres when we want to control things.
BTW am i the only one who thinks Digby is a little overrated? He’ great when he holds the ball, but he has hands worse then wendel Sailor! Give me a fit Mitchell over him any day.

That does sound like a great backline. I hope we can see it again soon.
Oppositions now know that Digby won’t pass so that has nullified some of this play. Kurtley better watch out there, too.

bucket06 no youre not alone, digby makes many simple mistakes from catching to mistackles to illdiscipline.
scored one try this season? and has a lot of energy because he has only played half the season.faingaa and digby play as loose forwards for reds which supposedly helps others perform mid table.

What an embarrassing comment from Deans. His playing favourities always walk straight back into the Wallabies the moment they get the all clear from the doctor, no form or fitness necessary. Beale this weekend. Rocky the last 3 years. It is Deans’ signature move. I expect nothing more. I don’t even get worked up by his selections with obvious inform omissions. It’s just Deans bring Deans. His lip service means nothing.

I have no doubt the backline Deans WANTS to start providing the injured guys get SOME RUGBY and FORM under their belt over the next few weeks is as follows:
9. Genia
10. Cooper
11.Mitchell (currently training with the Wallabies)
12. O’Connor
13. Ashley-Cooper
14. Ioane
15. Beale
Reserves: Barnes, McCabe and White
This team has the experience, plenty of X factor and solidarity to beat the All Blacks and Springboks
My only second option would be to put Barnes at 12, JOC on the wing to replace Mitchell as he’s played the least rugby out of everyone

Kuruki said | June 25th 2012 @ 1:54pm | Report comment
I don’t think Cooper and JOC are the best option for 10 and 12. if you are going to put JOC in there he really needs solid defenders either side of him and Cooper is barely able to secure his own channel. I would start Barnes and have Cooper on the pine. I think Barnes style suits a starting role he would bring less impact from the pine then Cooper would.
June 25th 2012 @ 2:18pm
Nick A said | June 25th 2012 @ 2:18pm | Report comment
Kuruki, you seem to lack confidence on JOC’s defence – on what grounds do you question his defence and can you pin point a time when he has not delivered? He is yet to falter defensively at Test level and anyone watching closely knows this. I would even go as far to say that JOC is a better offensive tackler than Barnes. If you look at their profiles on the rugby.com.au you’ll find JOC is fractionally heavier as well.
I like Barnes kicking game, decision making, competitive spirit and even defence but he’s not going to be the game breaker or creative genius against the All Blacks. What we need more of than the current team is pure speed and foot work to provide that half break…enter JOB, Beale and Cooper. Having AAC, Mitchell, Ioane and Genia give the team more solidarity.
