Forget the billion, I just want quality footy
The newly installed NRL commission is deep in negotiations with media head honcho’s, trying to get the best television deal possible for the league.
Their aim is at least a billion dollars.
But is that it? Is that their only objective? A billion bucks and it’s on TV somewhere, some on this channel and some on that. There is some on your phone, some live, some delayed, some in really bad time slots, some stand alone, some on at the same time and all depending on what state you live in.
But hey, at least they got the billion bucks right? Right? Wrong!
NRL fans are sick of not knowing the details of when, where, what time their team is playing 6 weeks in advance. We are sick of seeing delayed football, watching football in bad time slots.
We are pretty much sick of Channel 9′s dictatorship and non promotion of the game, which has helped them become the station they are today.
Fans do not care if the NRL gets a billion dollar deal, they just need to get close. The priority should be quality footy.
We want football seven days a week, whether it’s a game, a panel show (and I mean a good one, not the crap on at the moment). It could be anything: a preview show or a magazine show. But it has to satisfy those of us who have an appetite for football all week round.
Some may say that quality footy is what the players have to produce, but I don’t think it is? Rugby league players just like every other sports athlete in the world respond to atmosphere, fans, attention, adoration. Saturation of the market place will bring in more fans, it will convert the occasional fans into passionate fans and members, and the non fans into occasional ones.
I would like the NRL to remember this ‘quality footy’ when negotiating, it’s time to reward the fans, players and Rugby League.

If Rugby League matches AFL’s TV deal than you would think Rugby League has already bettered the AFL as apparently RL is less expensive… So from a perspective of profit margin RL does RL even need to match the AFL’s total deal?
Also while RL obviously should at least get parity with the AFL deal, I do believe it shouldn’t be at the expense of other factors. Channel 9 have proved themselves to be completely incompetent, channel 10 ftw!

Thank you Eaglerock, i have been saying this for years. Give me rugby league 24/7, that is all i want.
And i would even be prepared for rugby league to take less money to have the game shown live and have a shedule.
Do you have to sell the game to the highest bidder and continue to get screwed? No.
I dont want to sink the boot into you Eaglerock, i also think we really need to be looking at moving a couple of Sydney teams. Take yesterday, 12 thousand at Mackay in the cold rain wind, all wearing raincoats. They still turned up to what might have been the game of the season. Thats passion.
Now look at our 2 glorious Sydney clubs, 1 a 100 year old orginisation, the other last years premiers. 10 thousand. Crikey.
Now take players like Barber, SBW, Kasiano and even Stewart.,,, Markee players who could be selling our expansion plans to Central Queensland, Perth, second Brisbane teams , you also have another Burgess boy running around in England and the Sensational Sam Tomkins who would be brilliant out here.
Mate, i think it is time the game made these hard calls, some teams will never grow, no mateer what you do. The area wont let them grow. We need teams in areas with unparrelled growth , big cities for a start.
Imagine a second Brisbane team signing Sam Tomkins and Kasinao, imagine Perth signing SBW. Imagine Central Queensland bringing home Ben Barba and Dave Taylor.
The game can explode , now we need to make sure the guys running the show know what they are doing. If we dont make changes in Sydney, the game will never grow.
Not to mention the sponsers, or the world wide exposure we would get for buying SBW adding him to a new expansion team.
This is the opportunity of a lifetime for rugby league, lets hope we dont blow it.

And that still does not embarress you at all. Let’s say 14 thousand on a perfect Sunday afternoon.
Mate we are talking about a Sydney team and a Melbourne team playing in a Queensland Country town. Come on, this is the think9ing i keep talking about, wqe cant bury our heads in the sand forever.
Its just one excuse after the other. Like Gus said, i love my Sunday footy, apprently our top 2 Sydney teams dont seem to care.
Not sure what the Western clash got, Panthers Eels, but here is another exapmle of the game not selling itself to the public. I have more faith in Eels Bulldogs and Penrith.
The other 2 teams cant grow, they are in a geographic position where it is impossible.
Perth hase 2 million punters to grow a team, Melbourne has 4.5 million. Brisbane has 2 million.
Mackay has 80 thousand, they got 12 thousand on a wet cold soggy day. Sell the game to country towns if Sydbney does not want to turn up. We cant keep making excuses forever.

Now i am not going to have you cry baby Sydney siders try to tell me or anyone else otherwise. It is time for you to listen to truth, not bullocks you you think is truth.
Queensland has unparrelled growth for rugby league. Only a few days ago some guys paid off a 5 million dept to be part of the Titans, now getting ready to be run by a board of 8 directors.
Forget that, we have a billionaire who cant even get a lookin the way this game is run. Clive Palmer, and we have billion dollar companies wanting to sponser the game. Queensland Rail. We have Central Queensland’s richest man wanting to buy into the game. Geoff Murphy, we have Chinese and Indian interntaional flooding into Queensland, owning and operating huge mines along with Australia’s largest coal mining Area, the Surat Basin.
On top of that we have Brisbane sponsers sitting and waiting to get involved as they cant nowq with only 1 Brisbane team, yes 1 Brisbane team.
I think it is time we started to open our eyes and realise. We are sitting on a goldmine in Queensland, just sitting their waiting to be discovered.
If we dont take advantage of this now, even while the world is in recession, our game could be booming, why , what are we waiting for, Santa Claus. There is no Santa Claus, live in the now, rugby league’s time is now. Grab it.

Oikee I don’t disagree with you but I think having a 1st and 2nd Division will help your call for less Sydney teams. If you allow for relegation and promotion it means you don’t “turn the light of off” for some of those olde clubs.I think the comp could expand to 20 teams easily at the top level…. I think Central QLD and and WA are the where we should be heading and a second brisbane team however Central Coast would be the cheapest expansion team for the NRL still. Not the best but the lowest cheapest fruit.

The reason the game is in the state its in is because of Qld billionaires matey. They decimated the BRL to create one team and when that team became successful they thought they were bloody geniuses.
When people in Sydney were making decisions Qld had 4 teams. That’s one more than now nearly 20 years later. And a team in Perth.
Don’t believe everything you read in the Courier Codswallop mate. The NRL may have offices in Sydney but it’s controlled by News Ltd. in London.
And the reason Brisbane doesn’t have a second team is because of Brisbanes’ other team also controlled by your Qld friends at News Ltd.

Brisbane city central has 1 million patrons. This covers the Broncos. They have Ipswich which is growing fast, they have Redcliffe/Cabolture and Logan. Any of these areas could support and sustain a NRL team.
This is not in the Broncos area. You cant stick another team in Brisbane Central like the bombers are trying to do and tell the supporters to support the team. It has to be another city near Brisbane, which i have mentioned, all are cities around Brisbane area.

Get real. The broncos raised the bar. You’d be dead via afl now if not for the professionalism the broncos brought.
THE. MERE. FACT that bringing that about caused the super league war and sydney traditionalists to dig their heels in, shows how far you old style people will go to keep your heads in the sand.
That you could not negotiate properly, or defend against richer people in the first place via the administration.
There’ 2 types of things in this world: that which makes it happen, a success; and that which fails.
RL= FAIL in many regards. But don’t let that dent your enthusiasm for the game.

I like the Broncos but this is drivel…. Broncos and there owners tried to kill the League. It was not Sydney digging it’s heals in that created the Super League war it was NEWS Corp and their greed. You are not remembering that NSWRL brought Brisbane into the comp. You are forgeting that the QRL/NSWRL would not sought out their differences to place a QRL side in the NSWRL so the NSWRL had to establish the Broncos from scratch. The NSWRL brought in the Auckland Warriors , Melbourne Storm was the idea of the ARL but you keep reading courier mail and their drivel.
They set some standards NOW but the real money in league moving forward is using a modern digital platform to deliver the game via a “ARLC Digital Channel” I am of the belief that the ARLC should say “table something huge to FOXTEL or we will send it all to FTA” On a year by year basis and set up their own channel. This where the money is it will be worth more than attendance sad but true.

He seen the light and Paul White showed him everything to make your team successful, Gus said as much on TV the other day.
Like i said, Sydney is so far up its own backside it has no idea how outsiders are veiwing them. a bit Like New York thinks of itself, the world revolves around them. ?
The last time i looked, i was not buying my greens from Grenish village, and i dont have a townhouse in Harlem.
The simple fact is, you are not voted the most popular Australia team, or most supported by doing nothing. This club is a powerhouse, it would be nice to be supported by a few Sydney teams doing well, most get 2 men and a dog turn up.

People are sick of it, they are growing tied of Sydney. Honest, the only guys who cant see this is Sydney, they have the blinkers on. If they are not careful they will stuff origin up as well.
The game needs to find some balance. Its all NSW heavy and everyone can see this outside Sydney.
Stuart now cant stay at Manly, we all know he is worth 3.5 million.
If they try to make excuses to keep him under the cap, you will have yourself another super league war. The game is on a knife edge and we need someone to lead the game. The Oricle.
Manly let low paid players go, and had to fork out big money for foran and Cherry, plus the overpaid Lyons and Matai, T-Rex and Hoppa were on paupers wage, now getting big money at other clubs. Plus Manly have all the overs on watmough and Glen Stewart.
Now they have got themselves in a pickle and want the game to help them keep stewart, it does not work like that, the Broncos lost Petro and Falou, plus Inglis because of the cap. Yes life sucks.

And the only one who believes that London Irish tabled a $3.5m “offer” is you. I find it hilarious that a Broncos fans seems to have such a vested interest in another teams salary cap structure. When the only info he seems to get is from the Daily Telegraph.

The point is,
if his manager tried to talk his price up, bad luck. now everyone thinks he is worth this much. Look Manly have brought all this on themselves, i dont know why your trying to blame me. They lost fans, (women and kids) because of a massive brawl. They also paraded in public the famous nobody likes us we dont care image.
As for Lovkley, i have nothing to hide, the Courier Mail has nothing to hide, they produced the whole Broncos wages in the paper, The whole world could see what every player was on, nothing to hide, not a thing.
Now we all know we could not afford to keep Petro, so he moved to penrith on a good deal. Falou we begged to keep by paying him olutside the cap, Gallop said no, which is the right thing to do, You cant have a cap if you dont stick to it. We were going to buy Inglis, he got a bigger offer at Souths, so we could not afford him.
I also said, which was in the paper for everyone to read, that Lockyer was on 700 thousand, Cap Money, and was getting around 500 thousand sponsership money.
So he was on around 1.2-3 million a year. He was the Captain, plus the captain of the Queensland teasm, Plus the captain of the Australian team.
His last year with the broncos he took a 200 thousand salary cut, so that was off the cap, Not his sponser money. So he was getting 1 million his last year.
That is freeing up 1 million, because the sponser money can now go to another or other players.
Anything else you need to know. ?

turbo, I agree with that fixed scheduling is a must…it’s crazy to have the tv network calling shots on that.
But whilst $1B should be aggressively sought, it shouldn’t be the sole focus. I think the ARLC needs to decide: does it want the absolute maximum cash value (which could be $1B) or does it want a guarantee on other things, like all games broadcast live, including into Vic, SA and WA. If it wants the latter, I’d say it would have to take a reduced figure.

So 1 game live, only shown in 2 states yet look at where we are as a game. ?
I think it is up to the TV stations to seel the game for free, like they are trying to do AFL.
Our game is a monster, waiting to explode. We have a team in Melbourne, i think it is time to tackle the 2 or 3 other states where we could really start making a impact. Ladies and Gents, it is time to take the gloves off.
I love this one, a oldie but a goodie.
Open a can of whoopass.

Oikee,
When did Qld stop having their own footy show which I quite liked because it covered 3 codes at least occasionally??

Turboewd – I was more commenting on the obsession of the $1b mark. Why not sacrifice a little money to demand more out of the broadcasters, instead of going for the cash bonanza and in turn handing over a majority of control in what we see on TV.

That’s the point I was trying to make Eagle.
A lot of league commentators seem obsessed with this $1B figure, simply cos that’s what the AFL got. Guaranteed live games into every state – that should be the focus.

And a growing number of media people are mentioning the figure. It’s not just commentators. They have the least to benefit,.Again I repeat Simon Manning (Australian media sport) 11/6/12.
.
“Analysts believe the tV rights(that is not commenators) are worth about $950m,but bids could top $1bn if the competition between Nine,Ten and seven becomes heated.”
.Colin Smith of Lek is no a commentator but the adviser to the ARLC,he has been giving a range of figures, none under $1bn.
Grant has already stated maximising income is a priority(he mentions income time after time).Fixed scheduling and a national exposure, which is already in place via HD.Income is the focus, simply because clubs depend on it.
It was Gyngell that pumped up the argument that having a 2nd Brisbane side, would be worth $100m (5 years) to the Tv contract.

They aren’t mutually exclusive but they are counter intuitive.

i mean what you said. You can have both, but seems like one will be worse for it.
BUt then, I am sure there is a happy medium.
