In one of John Grant’s first media interviews after taking over as Chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC), he poured cold water on the idea of expansion in the NRL.
It was a slight shock to those who thought the Commission would be in favour of such bold moves. It also had several bidders scratching their heads, wondering whether pouring money into a potential rugby league side was a good idea. At that point, sending 50 dollar notes into a paper shredder would’ve yielded the same return.
It seems Grant didn’t want to over-promise and under-deliver though because yesterday another suitor nailed its flag to the mast.
West Australian Rugby League (WARL) chief executive John Sackson gave life to the West Coast Pirates.
It followed discussions with the ARLC where Sackson was given the impression that expansion would be welcomed once the new TV rights deal was signed, sealed and delivered in September this year.
The Pirates are believed to be a key component of the ARLC’s discussions with the various media outlets. Having a side based in Perth provides plenty of scheduling options for rights holders and fans alike.
But this isn’t just a quick grab for cash.
Sackson has been working on the WARL’s bid for three years and has mapped out pathways for the game in the state that run from the Pirates brand right down to the junior leagues.
Perth Glory owner Tony Sage and Balmain and New South Wales legend Benny Elias had previously spoken to the ARLC about a rival bid that had no association with the WARL.
Sage intended to mirror what Nathan Tinkler had done with the Newcastle Knights and while the money attached appeared inviting, blindsiding the WARL was a strange choice.
Working in conjunction surely would’ve been a better option.
The two parties met recently and found little to no common ground. A relationship, at this stage, appears unlikely.
Ditching the ‘Reds’ name was also a smart move.
The colours remain, but the brand needed to start from a fresh base and the Pirates name provides that.
Similarly, it would’ve been a disaster if the Titans had have called themselves the Chargers or Seagulls.
Player agents picked up the scent around 12-months ago and Sackson has had discussions not just about players, but coaches as well.
He’s also known to favour recruiting, not just good players, but a name capable of providing “cut through” into the local market.
That market, in many ways, already exists.
Plenty of rugby league loving people have moved west from Queensland and New South Wales chasing opportunity in a state thriving on the back of the mining boom.
Those people have been in the stands at recent NRL matches that have attracted impressive crowds when compared to several Sydney clubs.
Some club CEOs remain wary of expansion. The ARLC will need to show them that their own fortunes won’t be harmed by any new clubs.
Grant himself has said in the past that the competitions existing tenants deserve to share in the riches of the new TV deal before expansion is considered.
But that TV deal may not be as big if expansion isn’t included in the deal.
A team in Western Australia and a second team in Brisbane could deliver the big bucks required. More content equals more money.

I understand the need to move on from the Reds, and ‘Pirates’ is fine I suppose but I think they’ve missed a trick overall.
Why wouldn’t they include ‘Perth’ in the name? There will only ever be one West Coast in Perth, and therefore these guys will just be referred to as the ‘Pirates’. Also, in the winter months, there isn’t actually a ‘Perth’ football team in any code. There’s a Fremantle, there’s a Western Force, and now there will be two West Coasts.
What wouldn’ve been so wrong with ‘Perth Pirates’??

* In the WARL launch of the ‘West Coast Pirates’ yesterday, they included these lofty ambitions in their “Pirate Plan”:
“Our cannons are loaded and we’re aiming high. By 2020, The West Coast Pirates will be among the top five most recognised and respected Sporting Brands in Australia.
We’ll have our own state-of-the art training facilities and clubhouse and having won the SG Ball competition, we’ll have our sights set on winning our first NRL Grand Final and be poised to play in the State of Origin.”

It’s called setting benchmarks. They are hardly going to say we just want to be competitive, get a few people to attend,be recognised just south to Fremantle.
Any new club should make aspirations.OK some may appear outlandish ATT,but who really can predict what will happen 10 years down the line.

I have read some pretty strong predictions by new clubs, from other codes a swell as NRL over the years, which were left many times unchallenged.

I’m puzzled as to why there has been much discussion about the ‘Pirates’ part of the name, and almost none of the ‘West Coast’.
As you say, there can only be one West Coast in Perth.
I have heard it said ‘. .. but there are two Gold Coast teams…’, but Gold Coast is a clearly defined geographic/local Gov. region, similar to Melbourne which has 4 football codes with clubs including the Melbourne name.
West Coast is just a successful naming/marketing concept, claimed years ago !

Yeah alot of history and tradition to be made and kept in between 1995-97.Also lets keep the Reds name that is already taken by a Rugby team and Soccer team in the national football markets. While were at it lets bring back the Reds because they were the team cut to bring the comp back together,I’m sure the locals would really embrace that wouldn’t they1).Kids love the Pirate theme, if u want the team to grow than start with engaging the kids with something they can relate too.2)Correct me if I’m wrong, the only other team using the Pirate name/moniker is the West Harbour Rugby team in Sydney so u have a brand that isn’t being used in a national comp unlike the Reds name.3)A fresh start is better you would think instead of reopening old Super League wounds.4)Pirates=Boats and Treasure,Perth and W.A. in general is a outdoor, coastal, boating type of place that even today is still thought of as sort of isolated and undiscovered by the majority on the East Coast who probably couldn’t even name the next largest city after Perth. This is what we are dealing with and I think the Pirates is a great choice and will prove to be a winner along with a 4th Queensland team.

The Raiders cover a multitude of things.Vikings/Norsemen/Saxons/Visigoths/Vandals the list goes on.
The name Raiders like many within the code of late, was chosen after consultation with fans, and other areas.I mean they could have chosen Gallopers afterr one of the local rl teams.
Didn’t stop the Brumbies having a horse motif, when the Broncos had the same.I see no problem with it.
Tuggeranong Vikings RU would have been well down the list of ,securing name titles from.
The reason West Coast was chosen is plain and simple. The Norrthern Mining regions have a strong rugby league comp with 800 registered players.By including the title West coast, they are not only acknowledging the fact, but bringing them in to the fold so to speak.
A hell of a lot of people bagged the Titans moniker,it is now part of the NRL.They have a competitve team, are ensconsed with the local community, and quite frankly now no one gives a rats whisker about the name.

AFL is so big in that state, they can pretty much decide when and where a 3rd team will be located.A rl team creating a niche spot will have SFA impact.

Sorry Will, but that’s utter, absolute rubbish.
You can have both Qld Reds RU & Perth Reds RU without any problem. There’s also (unofficially) the Adelaide Reds A-L.
At present we have the NSW Blues RL (SOO), NSW (Speedblitz) Blues cricket (Sheffield Shield), Sydney Sky Blues A-L.
We have Bulldogs, Tigers & Eagles (Sea) in both AFL & NRL. Also Tigers in NBL & Sheffield Shield.
The naming rights protocol as I understand it, is this. You simply can’t have two clubs/franchises sharing exactly the same name in the same city/region, etc.
Perfect example being Brisbane Lions. Although the soccer version existed first, when the Brisbane Bears amalgamated with the Fitzroy Lions to become the new Brisbane Lions AFL club, they had to buy out the name from the soccer team.
Which also explains why we have Brisbane Roar in the A-League.
However, there’s absolutely nothing stopping different sporting clubs calling themselves Brisbane Tigers, Sydney Tigers, Melbourne Tigers, Adelaide Tigers, Perth Tigers, Hobart Tigers, etc. You can Melbourne Tigers & Richmond Tigers & you can have Hobart Tigers & Tasmania Tigers.
Just as long as they aren’t exactly the same, like Brisbane Lions AFL & Brisbane Lions (ex) NSL.
Now the protocol at national level is that you can have only one Kangaroos, Wallabies, Kookaburras, Opals, etc.
Now, you can also have variations of a national animal, eg, Socceroos, Hockeyroos, Ollyroos, etc, which display the kangaroo, but only the rugby league national team can call themselves Kangaroos. The test cricket team is unofficially known as “Baggy greens”, depicting a Roo wearing a baggy green cap.
Australia’s naming of national teams is different from say, South Africa. In the apartheid days, all SA sporting teams were called Springboks. In the new SA, all SA sporting teams are referred to as Proteas, with two exceptions (that I’m aware of). The rugby union team remains as the Springboks, while the football/soccer team is known as Bafana Bafana.
I trust this helps…..

A league with the name such as Roar and Heart, hardly earth shattering.Oh wait maybe the Perth Wombats that will strike fear and terror,to the Easterners.
Rest assured FitzSimons will have his usual anti rl rant in Saturday’s SMH ,about the Pirate’s name.
Would someone please show me an Saxon Castle in the Hunter Valley ,where the Knights of the Round Table are domiciled.
No, Mr Tinkler is not Sir Lunchelot.Yet Knights is a selling point.
It’s all about the next generation and the WARL had that no doubt in mind..

Fitzsimons could have a larger NRL rant but refrains because his wife works for Nine…

It has never restricted him in the past, nor Ï suggest will it do so in the future. He is as the saying goes ä law unto himself.
His wife comperes Carols by Candlelight on ch9t,yet he bangs on about atheism. He is his own man,and answers to no one.

Carols by Candlelight has little to do with religion but in any case its allowing people their own beliefs has nothing to do with atheism….

My point was plainly to show his wife’s involvement with 9,has little influence with his views.
CBC was an example. It has more than a smidgin to do with religion
Definition of Carol:Religious song.Source Oxford Dictionary.

the article is discussing a WA NRL franchise and we’ve evolved into discussing whether Carols by Candlelight is a religious event. I love this. Not paying out anyone… just love watching how these conversations deviate

I think the Knights (and the Steelers for that matter) was meant to have a connection to the Steel Cities of Newcastle and Illawarra. Knights wear steel armour, geddit?
I could be imagining that though.

I think you are imagining the fact. The Knights (check their mascot has as much relevancy to the Hunter region,as Bears do to North Sydney.
IOW I have no problem with it.
When the game eventually settles down with the clubs on the sporting fields, people get on with the game.
The Steelers of course tied in with the region, yet we still had some complain it was Americanised.

i would imagine the connection between knights and newcastle comes from the name of the city?

The Bears name does have relevancy to the area. They were named the Bears in the 50′s after they were sponsored by the Big Bear Shopping Centre in Neutral Bay. One that is still there. I’d say that is a tie in with the region.

If it was the Perth Wombats they could have gotten a really big Wombat from Perth Zoo and walked it around the ground as a mascot before games

Perhaps they could have used the name Perth Prunes. They would be as regular as clockwork, with all systems functioning admirably.
One stage the name Perth Pumas was in the offing.
So many names,so little time LOL.

Great advert for fast food outlets.

Besides, chubby, lazy and adorable, surely the archetype of the modern Australian man?
I see that they are being sponsored by Maccas already (sigh…).

I don’t know whether the Pirates moniker is for everyone, but given that it was the name of our F Division indoor soccer team, I’m on board with it. It does seem like a good move to go with something new though. You’re going to get the Reds fans on board no matter what, so go with something that might bring people outside of the locality to the party. It’s essentially the opposite of what the Central Coast bid is doing in their bid to transplant and resurrect a brand that is far from universally loved.
