Today’s 2012 NBA Draft will see the latest crop of college stars and international prospects come together at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Join us from 9am AEST today to find out all the latest draft buzz, trade rumors and drama associated with picks one through 60.
Each will arrive with one wish; to have their name read out at some point during the next three hours.
Who will land where and under what circumstance?
It’s no secret that the New Orleans Hornets will be selecting Kentucky power forward Anthony Davis with the first overall pick, thus the majority of attention has been directed towards the remaining 59 picks.
This is a rare draft in the sense that it doesn’t have a clear-cut second best player. From all reports we can expect this to be one of the most trade heavy, action packed draft days in recent memory.
The Michael Jordan owned Charlotte Bobcats will have all eyes on them with the second overall pick.
Will they take dynamic Kansas power forward Thomas Robinson, or look to go small with Florida’s shooting guard Bradley Beal?
Could they attempt to trade down the order and opt for the youngest prospect in this years draft, Kentucky small forward Michael Kidd Gilchrist, or former #1 high school recruit Harrison Barnes? The simple fact is nobody knows, and that’s the beauty of this years draft – we can expect twists at every corner.
Some general managers such as Minnesota’s David Kahn have already demanded to be let off the Draft rollercoaster. The Timberwolves got the player movement ball rolling by trading the 18th pick for Houston Rockets small forward Chase Budinger. Others, such as Brooklyn Nets GM Billy King, are moving in the opposite direction and doing everything they can to jump back on.
One general manager who has us all scratching our heads is the Houston Rockets Daryl Morey, who has stockpiled picks 14, 16 and 18. Are the Rockets in love with numerous players in this draft, or are they trying to position themselves to make a bid for disgruntled Orlando Magic superstar Dwight Howard?
In a matter of hours, all will be revealed.
The NBA Draft is known for generating numerous side stories outside of the selections themselves. Will we see someone dethrone Utah Jazz legend Karl Malone for worst suit in Draft history?
Will a prospect opt to hug it out with commissioner David Stern, as opposed to the more formal handshake? Could one of the green room invitees slide down the order and break our hearts like a tearful Rashad Lewis did in 1998? Could a European prospect one up Jan Vessely’s makeout session with his girlfriend upon hearing their name read out?
We can’t predict what will happen, but we can guarantee that there will be fireworks one way or another.
Whether it’s a rumor heating up, a trade being announced or a selection out of left field, we’ll have you covered.
“With the first overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the New Orleans Hornets select…”
Let the fun begin…

Exciting times for Hornets fans.
New Orleans absolutely nailed their picks, as did Golden State, Washington and Sacramento.

With the final pick in the draft the Lakers select centre Robert Sacre out of Gonzaga.
That concludes the 2012 NBA Draft.
With zero NBA players switching jerseys, and just three trades of minimal influence taking place, it’s safe to say that this years draft was incredibly underwhelming.

No worries, appreciate the feedback.
Turned out to be a bit of a lackluster day considering the mountain of trade rumors circling around earlier in the week.
I’d expect those same rumors to show up again once free agency opens.

Marcus Denham is off to the Spurs at #59.
Knowing the Spurs he’ll probably end up as an All Star and 1st team all NBA candidate.

Minnesota selects Robbie Hummel at #58.
Hummel can’t do anything outside of bury three’s from anywhere.
This is a straight up Adelman pick, the Wolves are adding a buffet of shooters around Rubio and Love.

Without a single NBA player switching uniforms, I think the highlight of this draft has been the Nuggets selecting a guy that you have to take a 3 hour ferry ride to see play.

Dallas select the undersized Darius Johnson-Odom at #55.

The Mavs really crapped the bed with the Zeller trade, they missed Fournier and then ended up with a bunch of guys they don’t need. They get a nice big chunky “F” for their efforts today.

The New York Knicks are on the clock and their fans go wild as if they just traded for the #1 pick.
They take Kostas Papanikolau, the Knicks fans reaction has been a highlight of the draft.
They waited 4 hours to hear a name they can’t pronounce.
I love New York basketball.

With the first pick of the 2012 NBA draft (2nd round) the Bobcats take Jeffrey Taylor.

Perry Jones lands inside the first round, Oklahoma will select him at pick #28.
This is a low risk high reward move from the Thunder. Another Presti home run?
The jealousy among neutrals grows.
12:14pm

If PJIII matures and his knee doesn’t end up bothering Sam Presti is going to end up looking like a genius.
12:17pm
Scotty Barby said | 12:17pm | Report comment
I argued all year that Perry Jones should have been in this range from the get go.
I’m more concerned about his consistency and love for the game than his injuries, he has the tools and the talent.
It’s 50/50 from here on out, he’s landed in the perfect situation.
Presti would have wet himself when PIII fell in his lap.
12:19pm
josmiller said | 12:19pm | Report comment
I think we may look at this down the road as a blessing in disguise for the guy. He would probably have mentally checked out on a cellar-dweller, but he’s going to realise really quickly that he needs to pull his weight on OKC.

John Jenkins is off to the Atlanta Hawks at pick #23, Jenkins has range from all areas of the court.
Pick 24 will see Jared Cunningham out of Oregon State head out to Dallas. The Mavs tried to flip this pick once Fournier was off the board, they were looking to stash some talent overseas.
Memphis will select Huskey Tony Wroten at #25.

Does anybody know what Houston are doing?
Patrick Patterson, Marcus Morris, Luis Scola, Royce White and Terrence Jones.

Boston send their combined IQ into the negatives with the selection of Fab Melo at #22.
The 7 foot Melo was suspended from the NCAA tournament for bad grades.
11:40am
josmiller said | 11:40am | Report comment
a) The guy can’t speak English
b) If there’s anyone who can make Fab play the game properly it’s Kevin “Death Stare” Garnett.
Fab’s strikes me as one of those “Right system, right teammates” guy. I think Boston fits that mould.

Scotty Barby said | 11:42am | Report comment
Melo strikes me as a guy who will be disinterested from the get go and out of the league in 3 years.
11:45am
josmiller said | 11:45am | Report comment
That’s why I like him in Boston. KG be on him from Day 1 and he’ll either be gone by day 2 or shape up.
1st scenario is highly likely, but I’m one of those people who likes to see the best in others.

Scotty Barby said | 11:33am | Report comment
Jared Sullinger and his bad back are heading to Boston at pick #21.
Relief for Sullinger, who was bookmarked as a lottery pick all year until an injury red flag saw his draft stock plummet.
I love this pick, huge value here.

josmiller said | 11:37am | Report comment
I see a bit of poor man’s David West in Sullinger. Someone who can manufacture points is something the Cs definitely need.

That’s a nicely balanced core, assuming Golden State are fans of logic.

They did the logical thing! Holy crap.

This draft is the complete opposite of everything I expected, a competent NBA?
What the hell?

Damian Lillard goes to Portland at #6.
He fills a need at PG, and will start from the get go.

No trades!
I didn’t see this coming.

Sacramento will form the latest pair of twin towers in the league.
Headcase twin towers, but twin towers nonetheless.
Robinson in tears during his interview, he’s taken the hardest road possible to become a pro.
You have to love this kids passion. Heartwarming stuff.

He’s one of my favourite people in the draft. Carries himself the way he plays. Tough, relentless. Obviously a mature guy, had no idea about that personal stuff. What a journey.

He’s a lock to succeed, he’ll do everything necessary to become a quality pro.
I love this pick.

Sacramento select Thomas Robinson at #5, falling in line with my mock draft.
I’m allowed to boast at least once.
This is the steal of the draft, great pick.

That’s the second year in a row that the Cavs have made tentative selections at #4.
Tristian Thompson last year, Waiters this year.

The Cavs just went backwards in my book.
That was a reach, and a curveball way out of left field.
Never change Cleveland, never change.

Cleveland select Waiters at #4.
This draft has officially been turned upside down!

Gotta be Robinson at #5 now.

The Wizards select Bradley Beal at #3, this was a lock.
They would be ecstatic, Beal was the #1 prospect on their big board.
Wall and Beal now form a must watch backcourt, they’ll be league pass darlings and a fringe playoff team next season

MKG mopes his way up to the podium, he looks disappointed.
The Bobcats problems were all on the offensive end, with the addition of Kidd-Gilchrist their problems are now still all on the offensive end.

The Bobcats select Michael Kidd-Gilchrist with the #2 overall pick.
Wow!
Robinson and Beal slide down the order

No way Washington passes on Beal here then. I’ll be stunned if they take anyone else.

Who do the Bobcats select? Beal, Robinson? MKG?

The Hornets shock nobody by selecting Anthony Davis with the #1 overall pick.
And we’re off and running in the “Long and Athletic” stakes!

Teams will have 5 minutes to make each selection, which means plenty of down time between picks.

I can’t believe this deal hasn’t happened yet, it makes perfect sense for both teams.
MJ will likely butcher the pick regardless, I can’t wait to see the Bobcats select Moe Harkles in the top 5.
9:27am
josmiller said | 9:27am | Report comment
The Cats haven’t shown that big of an interest in Beal and the Cavs are completely wet for him. Anyone at #4 will help the Cats about as much as anyone they can get at #2. And as you said, they’ll stuff the pick up anyway so why not do the deal.

Good morning all, we’re off to a slow start with little action on the rumor mill front.
The latest word is that Boston are trying to move up to take Austin Rivers.
It’s rare that we see a father/son combination at the pro level, personally as a non-Boston fan I’d welcome the drama.
