Graham stars as Sharks down Broncos
Related coverage
Cronulla showed they don’t need Paul Gallen and Todd Carney to impress as they ended an eight-year Suncorp Stadium drought with a 26-12 NRL victory over Brisbane on Friday night.
Wade Graham, playing in Gallen’s No.13 jersey, starred for the Sharks as he set up a 16-0 lead in as many minutes at the start of a topsy-turvy and sometimes spiteful clash.
Utility Graham scored one try, set up two others and menaced the Broncos in defence but finished the night on report for a controversial shoulder charge on Josh Hoffman.
Carney’s five-eighth replacement Chad Townsend also performed strongly and kicked superbly for two tries as Brisbane’s undermanned pack, missing six Queensland Origin forwards, was dominated early.
But it was a 90m intercept to winger Nathan Stapleton which ultimately settled the result midway through the second half after the Broncos launched a gutsy comeback to have all the running at 16-12 down.
An Alex Glenn try from a rare tight-head scrum win had given the home side the momentum in front of 26,268 parochial fans, and they continued to hammer the Sharks line.
But Brisbane halfback Peter Wallace, in a game he’d rather forget, threw an ill-advised cut-out pass that Stapleton plucked out of the air for an unimpeded run to the line.
Colin Best crossed for two tries and Ben Pomeroy also bagged a four-pointer in the five tries to two victory to move the Sharks to third past the Broncos on the ladder.
Rubbing salt into the Broncos’ wounds, centre Jack Reed (quad) and fullback Hoffman (head knock) finished with injury worries after failing to play any part in the second half.
The Sharks had lost their past five matches against the Broncos by an average margin of 22 points and tasted victory just once in 12 trips to Suncorp Stadium but they started on fire and took the home side by surprise.
The corresponding match last year saw the Broncos jump to a 20-0 lead after 20 minutes and for five seconds the Sharks had the same advantage midway through the first half.
Hoffman suffered his head knock when Graham pulled off a huge in-goal tackle which saw the ball jolted free and pounced on by rival fullback Matthew Wright.
Referee Gavin Badger immediately awarded a try before calling for a video review which saw Graham penalised for his shoulder striking Hoffman’s head and the try disallowed.
With a groggy Hoffman replaced soon after, youngster Aaron Whitchurch started the fightback when he scored in his NRL debut in the 32nd minute.
Sharks captain Jeremy Smith was also placed on report for striking Brendan Gibb.
There are fears Reed, who was pushed off by Ben Pomeroy for the Sharks’ third try, may have fractured his fibula and will undergo X-rays.
In a brutal clash despite the absence of Origin players, Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan was upset by the decisions to place back-rowers Graham and Smith on report when neither deliberately attacked the head.
Flanagan said Hoffman was just a victim of an accidental head clash with Graham while Smith was trying to protect himself from Gibb.
“No one wants to see anyone get injured but for me I thought it was a really good shot,” he said. “Wade went in there with the intent to put a good shot on him and no intent to hit him in the head.
“I just thought it was a good tackle, and Jeremy was put on report as well.
“He’s dived on a loose ball and put his arm up to protect himself.
“We’re trying to soften the game up. That’s happened forever and a day. There was no intent in that either.”
Broncos skipper Glenn said he was devastated to see Brisbane’s fightback undone by one bad pass from Wallace.
“It was a bit heart-breaking,” he said. “We had a lot of momentum and confidence before that intercept.”
While Broncos hooker Andrew McCullough got through a mountain of work and finished the match with 61 tackles, coach Anthony Griffin was disappointed in regular halves Wallace and Corey Norman.
“The panic came from the guys you thought wouldn’t panic tonight – Wal and Corey took a few wrong options with the footy,” Griffin said.

Wallace had a shocker. New south Wales should think themselves lucky to have Pearce as their half.
You would not give 2 bob for Wallace after last night’s performence, and he is a senior player.
He made 10 decisions and every single option he took was the wrong option.
The baby broncos performed well apart from that, except maybe Hofman. Makes you ask the question why the Broncos let Bearle and Teo go next year, yet we keep Hofman who seems to rather take head hots than try to run around players.
2 weeks now he has run straight into Inglis and now Graham, and he runs right into them.
We wont be winning much at all if this is how he is going to play, you have to put a step in your work, not charge headfirst into players.

Well said oikee. While not a huge Pearce fan I have never understood the fascination with those calling for Wallace’s inclusion in the Blues squad. The only way you would change your halves combo for a decider would be through forced injury or an absolute superstar is returning from one. Not bring in a bloke who has been playing ok but hardly setting the world on fire.
The Broncos will take a lot out of last nights game. They withstood an early onslaught and showed great character to fight back for such an inexperienced side. Some quality youngsters up north.

We are a long way from a premiership, maybe 3 years, and i dont have confidence in Wallace if we make a final.
He showed last night how devoid of ideas he really is, like a zombie programed to go through the motions.
The other half Corey Norman has really got to stand up and be counted, or we wont be going anywhere.
You know it is bad when in the last 20 minutes your yelling at the TV shouting “hook him, Hook Him”.
Dont pass it to Wallace whatever you do, oh no, he run the ball again on the last tackle. Oh NO.
It was a damm nitemare watching him play. My wife was saying, what about Macullock, i use to be shouting his name every 2 minutes last year.
He is better now.

What an unbelievably easy draw the Broncos have had by the way. The only other team in the top 8 they have beaten is Souths (twice) and they have lost to the Cowboys (twice), Manly, Storm, NZ and now Cronulla of the other top teams. For a team with so many superstars?? this is pretty unimpressive. Cronulla on the other hand have beaten all of the Cowboys, Manly, Storm, NZ and now your mighty (pretenders?) the Broncos.
Seriously the refs have been responsible for all those losses or something? i think you Donkeys supporters are suffering a few delusions as to how good your team really is. on form it would appear they are nowhere near premiership contenders (no matter what morons like the shires greatest resident Sharks hater Gus Gould imagines) but rather seem like border line top 8.
To say that Sharks supporters are looking through rose tinted glasses is absurd. You imagine yourselves premiership contenders, while we’re happy to take any win as a bonus.

I agree Wallace had a shocker. But then I have never rated him as a player. Norman is young and learning the game. His dummy and step back is being read too easily now so he needs to add more variety to his game in attack.
But the big thing for me now is the Broncos have completely lost any form of attacking threat. Earlier in the season we used the ball, now no one in the team is prepared to pass the ball. Even last night, two tries down with eight minutes to go all we would do is hit it up or one pass from dummy half and hope the receiver could break the line. As the season has gone on this has become worse and worse. We have no hope in the finals if we attack like that.

Its been said before and it will be said again, the scheduling is a joke. In terms of points and the ladder, this is a hugely important clash, as both sides are inside the top four and looking to string together wins and form before the finals. One team missing their two best, and another missing at least six (that I can count) is in no way fair. And then you have my Cowboys, who have to travel over to NZ, one of the toughest road trips for any team, minus JT, Tamou, Scott and Tate. They then front up to a Warriors team missing exactly no-one. Seriously NRL?? This has to be one of the first things the commission changes, along with stripping of the ball… but dont get me started on that.
June 30th 2012 @ 8:43am
oikee said | June 30th 2012 @ 8:43am | Report comment
You mess with the ball stripping and players will just punch the ball out every second tackle.
And we will be whinging about how slow the game is because of all the ball stripping. Dont listen to Gus, one or 2 ball strips and he goes off.
Last night before he mentioned the strip it was 9 sets of tackles without 1 mistake.
Soon as a ball gets dislodged, this is all he wants to talk about for the next 6 sets of tackles. He is a nitwit.
July 1st 2012 @ 2:37pm
Mantis said | July 1st 2012 @ 2:37pm | Report comment
Yeah but it goes both ways too. A player with no intention of stripping the ball will be penalised more often then not if the ball comes out in the tackle because of poor ball security by the player running the ball. That is frustrating as hell. Obviously you cant make it a free for all in the tackle, but there has to be a bit more liability by the player running the ball.
While were whinging about rules, the double movement rule is also in my sights. If a player can reach out and score, why shouldnt he be able to?

I was at the game.
Wade Graham was immense. He was in everything early. His defense was brutal, with some massive hits. If the judiciary is in any way consistent (sorry, bad joke) he will be in trouble for his hit on Hoffman. It was a dead ringer for Pritchards hit earlier this year. A good shot, but unfortunately, his shoulder got Hoffmans head. Hoffman u a bit like Dugan. Every run he has, he gets up looking in pain.
The Sharks blitzed the Broncs in the early minutes. You had the feeling the Broncs would have won, but the intercept try was a bridge too far. It stopped their come back.
Also I thought the Sharks definitely got the rub of the refs. They were holding down, they were feigning falling over at the play the ball… Anything to slow the Broncos ball, and they got away with it.

I think Hofman got what he deserved. He always runs straight into players, if you let them line you up, maybe a few good hits will wake you up.
Carmicael Hunt use to do this as well, run straight back into players, imagine him playing now, they would drive him 6 foot under.
This is why Slater is so good, he never lets the opposition have a free shot on him. Hofman is a sitting duck for punishment, Inglis nearly klilled him, Graham just finished him off.
Lesson learned, i hope the young guy has learnt something.
Wallace use to do that as well, make a mistake then try to tackle a front rower head on to prove his worht. At least he did not get injured. The damm Bronx, they are falling to pieces. Again.

I’m happy for the Shark supporters they got the two points but in reality a team of men sent in to bash a team of boys maybe not as good a result as expected. Not a lot to be proud of really and remember, boys grow into men and I can assure you they will remember. I will be interested to see if Graham and Smith carry on with the same sort of rubbish against players of their own stature.

Gaz, Wade Graham is 22 years old. How old are your boys? Sharks had missing from their top 17 Gallen, Carney, Fifita, Toupou, Mills, Gardner. That’s 6 of their top 17. Exactly what extra penalties should have been awarded against the Sharks besides the 4 or 5 rdiculous ones that were already awarded in an attempt to even up the game and save Broncos fans the embarrassment. Has Brisbane beaten a full strength Melbourne this year, or last? I believe Cronulla managed it a month or two ago. Broncos are the richest most talent laden club in the league. You were beaten fair and square by a team missing just as many first graders as you were and who has far less money to buy back ups than you do.

Well in one instance Ben Pomeroy caught a bomb and then one handed threw Reed, an international and regular first grader, off him like a rag doll and over the side line in order to get across the line. The intercept was well anticipated. Obviously the last try was a bunch of bumbling Broncos, but the Sharks didn’t bumble it. But none of them were assisted by absurd penalties gifting multiple sets to the Broncos on the Sharks try line. Wallace making mistakes was not a product of inexperience. He is your starting half back.
The only reason that the Broncos came back into the game was because of gift penalties and the fact that through injuries the Shark’s bench is an iincredible drop off from the starters. Once the Sharks starting pack was back on the field the come back miracualously halted. When Ross, De Gois, Gibbs etc were on the field the score was 26-0 and should have been more. Similarly last game against the Warriors the Sharks starting side won the game 19-0, while against the bench the warriors won 16-0. It’s not rocket science really. Just look at the numbers on the players backs.
Unfortunately I guess for once the bullies got themselves bullied.

Lets see home ground advantage, home crowd, first Friday night game on 9,all favouring the Sharks.cough cough!!
The tackle on Hoffman in goal was shoulder shot which got him ,but it was the head contact that knocked him out.Even Gould said it was legit .It should have been a try.

The refs helped Cronulla … ??? What? I musta been watching a different match.
And Cronulla were delaying the play-the-ball when Broncos had the ball? Please … Brisbane were doing it to slow Cronulla down.
Fair result in the match, I thought.
And yes, Brisbane were depleted ,,, as were Cronulla. Yet don’t forget – Brisbane has a greater gene pool from which to get players to fill in for players absent on rep duty.
All clubs should acknowledge that if thay buy representative players, then you have to accept that they’ll be missing from time to time.
