The third one-day international between England and Australia at Edgbaston has been abandoned because of rain without a ball bowled.

The umpires inspected the ground regularly on Wednesday but every time it seemed play would be possible another downpour arrived.

There was not enough time left to dry the ground sufficiently and still allow for the minimum of a 20 overs per side match.

England, 2-0 up in the five-match series, will no longer be able to go to number one in the one-day international world rankings ahead of Australia because they needed to win 5-0.
