Chiefs skipper Craig Clarke has a fair idea of what the Super Rugby leaders can expect when a wounded Crusaders side come visiting in front of a sold-out crowd at Waikato Stadium tonight. Join us for live scores from 5:40pm AEST.
The Crusaders are backing up from a 23-22 defeat to the Hurricanes and sit precariously placed at fifth on the table with two rounds to go.
“When they come off losses, they’re pretty ruthless and pretty fired up,” Clarke said.
“It will be intense all right.”
The Crusaders will be desperate to ensure they don’t miss out on making the play-offs for the first time in 11 seasons.
In Hamilton, they will have a starting line-up with 12 All Blacks, including fullback Israel Dagg, five-eighth Dan Carter and No.8 Kieran Read, who are all returning from injury setbacks.
The Chiefs can’t boast the same star power, but their 24-19 victory over the seven-time champions in Napier in March remains in the memory bank.
“I know we can’t rely on that because things evolve,” Clarke said.
“But we can take confidence that, if we do things well, we can beat them.”
The Chiefs have huge motivation as well to secure a victory at Waikato Stadium as they look to their own agenda.
They’ve already wrapped up the New Zealand Conference – even if the Crusaders, their closest pursuers, make up a 10-point gap, the Chiefs would still finish ahead on tiebreak because of more wins.
However, of far greater importance is staying top of the overall ladder – they have a four-point lead over the Stormers – so they secure home advantage throughout the play-offs.
Three years ago, Clarke was a member of the only Chiefs side to have reached a final.
Their reward for beating the Hurricanes to make the title decider was the long trek to South Africa to play top qualifiers the Bulls, who walloped them 61-17.
“We’re focused on accumulating more points,” Clarke said.
“I was part of the team in `09 who had to travel to Pretoria and it’s a tough thing to do.”

The Cheifs were given a lesson in final footy intensity from the Crusaders.
Not sure what happened but the Chiefs tight 5 were showen up big time by the Crusaders and thats why they lost IMO.
The Crusader TMO try, SBW not passing in the last minute didn’t help but the Chiefs had a horrible night with their set pieces.
They had enough opportunities to mount something but their set pieces just let them down. Crockett rolled Tameifuna all night. The big man would be shatttered after that. The hunger from the Crusader pack was really on show.
When Guildford threw that pass dead and the Cheifs had 5m scrum you could feel the Chiefs backline buzzing about getting a shot with so much space. Scrum time and the Crusader Pack absolutely smash them and keep smashing them downfield till Carter kicks the ball 15m from the Chiefs line. Opportunity lost and the Crusaders get a huge lift from that.
Hopefully the Chiefs learn from this. At least they’re not playing finals footy yet.
The Chiefs tight 5 need to pick up their game if they want to win their first title..

Chiefs should/could still have won that game even though set piece was off all night, they lost their captain and Lawrence cost them with an absolute shocker. I’m not worried about them whatsoever. That was finals intensity against a team that will probably now make the final. I am going to pick a rematch in the grand final if these two don’t meet before hand.

Agreed.
Thats the positive the Chiefs can take out of the game.
The tight 5 was off, lost their captain and they didn’t get any help from the TMO and they still almost beat a fired up Crusader team.
I’ve got no doubt the Chiefs will be meeting the Crusaders for Rnd 3 later on.
What a game though. Almost makes you feel like you wasted your time watching the Ireland tests. (Except the 2nd one.)

Massive Crusaders scrum. They get the turnover. 13 minutes to go. This is setting up for a ripper finish. 2 more chief tries, 1 crusader try and a 35-35 draw would be a brilliant result

6:49pm
KiwiDave said | 6:49pm | Report comment
Well the NZ rugby contract states he cant sign anything in another code until it expires. He was able to sign with the Japanese because its the same code but not with the NRL (different code). Hopefully he sees common sense

BL must have watched last week’s replay and realised he owed us a couple…
Tough call that. Could Ellis legitimately play the ball with Kerr-Barlow’s arm around it?
6:32am
Jerry said | 6:32am | Report comment
I don’t think Ellis played the ball at all. Ellis, and the ball, were driven over the line by Whitelock. I dunno if it should be a try.
Was quite funny to hear Marshall’s reaction though.

Chiefs have looked panicky and messy, missing Clarke’s leadership on the field at a guess, but a good fightback, I hope they can calm it down and work a win.

First half was a half of two halves
Crusaders came out on fire. It was the Crusader side who thrashed Auckland and Otago in the opening 20 minutes. Everything was firing and they racked up a 20-6 lead. Chiefs were looking in trouble at all set pieces. Then suddenly the Chiefs found their form and came storming back scoring the next 10 points. Carter missed a penalty right on halftime from right out in front and the score at halftime 20-16
Highlight of the half. Without doubt Taumalolo’s brilliant burst up the field. Shame a try couldnt be scored from it. Deserved it.

Wow i can’t wait for this game. The intensity will be huge. i would not be surprised to see some biff in the front row also. Not often you read about banter between two NZ clubs but apparently the Franks boys are seething over the last encounter and big Ben Tameifuna has told them to bring it on. The first scrum is going to be Epic.
What an absolutely massive night of rugby we have coming up. I have not been this excited about watching super 15 for a long time.
