There is yet another star in Los Angeles. Look at who Steve Nash is and everything he has accomplished in his career, this move to acquire him by the Lakers from the Phoenix Suns is great.
A two-time NBA MVP, from all the suitors in the free agent season, it’s the Lakers that got Steve Nash’s talents.
He now joins Kobe and company out in Hollywood. In the sign-and-trade, Nash will get a three-year deal for roughly $25 million or so and in doing so, bypasses the Knicks and Mavericks who were after the star point guard.
In return, the Suns receive four draft picks, two first rounders and two second rounders as well as $3 million in cash.
Nash said when confirming the trade:
“After talking with (owner) Robert (Sarver) and (president of basketball operations) Lon (Babby) we’ve agreed that it’s time for both of us to move in new directions. I approached them and asked if they would be willing to do a sign and trade deal with LA because it is very important to me to stay near my children and family. They were very apprehensive and didn’t want to do it. Fortunately for me, they reconsidered. They saw that they were able to get assets for the team that will make them better, assets they would not have otherwise had. It made sense for them to do a deal that helps their team get better.”
So how did this all come about? Many teams were in the running or at least trying to sign Nash but LA seemed to come from nowhere.
On Tuesday night, Los Angeles front office made a push and saw the potential to get the deal done. The Suns were hesitant at first however, as we now know, the changed their minds and dealt.
Credit needs to go to Suns owner, Robert Sarver. He did what Nash wanted – enabled him to stay close to his family. It is a good place to be and now has a shot at that illusive championship ring. Nash has done so much for the franchise and in the end Sarver felt it was his duty.
With the trade exception from the Lamar Odom trade, they were able to get it through successfully.
The Lakers get Nash basically for free – the picks they gave away won’t be high. This move is only going to benefit the team going forward.
On July 11, when this is officially completed, there will be several bridesmaids looking for a point guard – Dallas, Houston, and Toronto. Phoenix were quick to move and come to agreement with Goran Dragic on a $34 million, four-year deal.
On face value, Nash is one of the best point guards to play the position in the last 10 seasons. He will make the game easier for the big men. He will also take pressure off Kobe as the facilitator with the ball.
There is a challenge in all this though. Head coach Mike Brown will need to work out how to run the offense – modification is required.
Since joining the Suns, Nash was won two NBA MVP awards, been named as an All-Star six times, starred in five playoff appearances and sits fifth all-time in assists with 9,916.
Nash has been the face of the Suns for many years and, with Charles Barkley, is in the top two players to play for the franchise. He set the tone, work ethic, built terrific camaraderie in the locker room and just made everyone better.
So let’s get down to the big question. Where are the Lakers? Although an LA fan, I still put the Oklahoma City Thunder at the top of the western conference – ahead of Nash, Kobe, Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Metta World Peace.
OKC is younger and they dominated the west last season – they will only improve and so will Kevin Durant. In saying that, Nash is still in the top six or seven point guards in the league and will make the Lakers better – just like he did in Phoenix.
Another advantage is he may well bring Gasol back to where he was a couple of years ago – both on and off the court.
However the Nash acquisition may not be the end for LA. Dwight Howard will certainly rethink a move to the Lakers. If that were to happen, Bynum and a few other elements would be impacted.
Nash is a defensive liability and the only move LA could make is to swap Howard and Bynum – any other player would affect the defensive game and put them at risk of being smashed by OKC or San Antonio pick ‘n’ roll games.
The Lakers are now the only team in the NBA with two league MVPs – Kobe and Nash.
Reaction in LA was that the team is back. The city is back, and total excitement.
The offense last year wasn’t exciting, but with the inclusion of Nash, that is about to change, it will be more diversified and unpredictable.
Exciting times ahead.

-it’s a signing that sounds great in theory but is it really a greet marquee signing in practice.
-Facts about Steve Nash
-He is 38 hardly a spring chicken , is in serious veteran status level now where if he gets a bad injury it could end his season and at 38 most players have past it.
-He is Canadian for those that don’t know so maybe Canada’s greatest ever basketballer, former LA Laker Rick Fox was another.
-He is a former NBA MVP
-but he is 38 will offer good tips to the younger generation , but this is hardly a marquee signing. I see very storng similarities between this deal and Shaq’s circus in the last 5 years or so of his career. Shaq one of greats maybe some say greatest ever player, just look at shaqs play off record if you don’t believe me he has the best stats of all time in grand finals that MJ never achieved shaq in his prime was phenomenal a 7’2 man ahead of his time.
-But shaq at the end just flip flopped a lot and basically was more of a useful bench player if nothing else. Who could offer tips to youngsters i suppose.
-So good in theory but hardly a marquee signing now that Nash is 38, he will be 39 next year in Febuary.

You can’t compare Shaq and Nash here. Look at Nash’s stats and PER, he will provide more and have greater effectiveness. This is a massive signing. Forget his age. He will make things easier, release pressure and put up very good numbers still.

You left off a few bullet points, Johnno.
- He finished second in the league in assists
- He shot a career high 52% from the field
- He shot 39% from the three point line
- He was an all-star
Despite his age, he’s still extremely productive and efficient.
This is a marquee signing, any way you look at it.

As a Raptors fan, it’s a sad to see that opportunity go, especially with Colangelo making the poker move picking up Fields to disway the Knicks for picking him up.
I do believe he still has value left as he’s a PG, which has a longer shelf life then centres/forwards (just look at how long Stockton played for the Jazz and still competed at a high level).

The big question I have is: how will this help the Lakers beat the Thunder? As much as I love Nash, I’m not convinced he get’s them over the line in the playoffs. I’m looking forward to seeing how he handles playing in matches when Kobe goes iso though. When was the last time Nash had to play with a black hole?

Nash obviously improves them but will it get them over OKC, we will have to wait and see. What I like about the timing is that both are in the latter stages of their careers. We will see changes from Kobe, the way coach Brown changes the O and how the team goes about overall.

Who here thinks LA will now chase Howard?

I don’t think they should now. Howard can’t be trusted. Who knows when he will change his mind, throw his coach under the bus, demand a trade, ask for an extension, etc, etc. He’s a flake. And integrating two new players into the starting five will take plenty of adjustment.
Nash will make what the Lakers already have, better. They just need to add an athletic wing defender, and an outside shooter (hopefully in the same player!)

Nash speaking on radio:
“For me, it was important to speak to him and make sure he was completely on board, and that he could kind of visualize this as being a good fit, and being excited about it. So I spoke to him,” Nash told Max Kellerman and Mychal Thompson on 710 ESPN. “Kobe, he was great. He was excited, and explained to me how he thought it would help, and why he thought it would be great, and I think a lot of the reasons he had were ones I could already envision before speaking to him.”

As a Knicks fan, even though it was always a long shot I’m sad we didn’t get him. Lin is overrated and we really need a veteran facilitator at least someone that can help Stoudemire look like a decent player.

Can’t see them keeping Pau though. They’ve been cutting salary in recent years and tough to see how Pau really works as a fourth option.

Hey Mushi,
Fourth option isn’t as bad it sounds when Nash is running the point. Nash is a brilliant point guard who keeps everyone happy, and gets everyone their shots. So I think they’ll keep Pau now.

I’d rather have Bynum as he has always been a Laker and can be trusted. Howard could well just ruffle too many feathers.

Pau will stay – Bynum may be traded to get Dwight. Dwight will have shoe deals, he will be in Hollywood and have a shot at a championship ring.
