McKay happy to help young Aussie bowlers
Clint McKay insists he is happy to be the steady, quiet man of the Australian bowling attack while the faster bowlers grab the headlines.
Although England lead the five-match one-day series 2-0, McKay has been Australia’s most economical bowler, bringing control to an attack that also has the express pace of Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and tearaway paceman Pat Cummins (injured). James Pattinson is also in the squad.
McKay has bowled 10 overs in both matches and managed to avoid any serious punishment so far with figures of 1-43 and 1-42. Although he is keen to help the younger bowlers develop, he said he will keep battling for a place in the one-day and Test teams.
“It’s definitely something I’ll be trying to do,” McKay told reporters after the Edgbaston washout. “If it comes down to it and the young kids jump me, then that’s great for them and great for Australian cricket.
“There are some very exciting prospects coming through, guys who are going to be superstars. Anything I can pass on to them and help them improve and get to where they need to be as quickly as possible, I’m happy to do that. There are going to be some great players.
“(But) you need balance in the batting and balance in the bowling. I don’t have the pace of some of these young kids coming through but I think I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve and, so far, its all working out as a group.”
McKay, 29, said he is determined to add to his one Test appearance, especially if he could make next year’s Ashes tour.
The Victorian is well aware that some of his fellow pace bowlers grab the headlines and have more of a public profile but he would not have it any other way.
“I love it – it’s the best way to be,” he said. “The lesser headlines the better. I just want to quietly keep doing my job week in, week out.
“I won’t worry about the fanfare – the young kids can have it. Young James Pattinson loves the limelight so we push him forwards as much as we can.”© AAP 2013
