Why Rabbitohs vs Roosters is really Bunnies vs Dummies

Brian Smith is a very good coach. No, he’s not an all-time great coach, you have to win titles to be one of those, and he’s had his chances (I’m looking at you, Parramatta 2001). But he is one of the better coaches to have plied his trade in the NRL.
Which means three things: either he’s lost his players. Or his players are dumb. Or he’s lost his players and they are dumb.
I choose option number three.
In anticipation of this round’s local derby between the two inner city (one of which now plays 613 miles from the inner city) foundation clubs, I thought I’d venture a closer glance at what’s happening in Chook and Bunny land.
It’s hard to believe it, let alone say it out loud: Souths are good. They’re going to make the semis. Enormous credit must be given to Michael Maguire. He’s devised a structure which doesn’t require dominant halves, because Souths don’t have any.
Adam Reynolds is having an excellent year, because he’s staying within himself. Right now, he’s Mitchell Pearce-lite: quality kicker, ball distributor, not much of a threat running the footy. Add brilliant goalkicking and you have a good result for the Bunnies.
Then there’s John Sutton. He’s like the schlubby character actor in action movies who dodges all the bullets, helps nobody, and ends up poking his head out of the rubble at the end, cracking one-liners as the credits roll. He was there all the time, but when the important stuff started to happen he calmly hid under a desk until the dust settled. The man plays rugby league like he’s on a construction site. Except construction workers experience more physical contact on an average work day.
Maguire punctures the opposition defensive line with his two main weapons: Dave Taylor on the right and Greg Inglis anywhere he likes.
But the man at the controls is Isaac Luke. His dominance at dummy half begins the Bunnies’ attacking vacuum, sucking in opposition defenders. A venomous short passing game among the forwards continues the process before Souths begin to spread to the edges. To beat them, teams must lock Luke down and stop Burgess, Crocker and Taylor from advancing beyond the initial tackle and releasing the ball.
Good luck.
Souths are a half or five-eighth short of being an upper-echelon team, joining the Storm, Manly, Brisbane and Canterbury in that class. But they can beat any of those teams if everything works perfectly (the Cowboys, Warriors and Wests Tigers also fit that mould).
The Roosters present a different challenge. One must find a way to sit back and let them destroy themselves.
Brian Smith is a very good…no, hang on, I’ve already said that. So, we now know that his players have tiny brains and those brains have already decided not to listen to Brian Smith, who is a very good coach.
If the Roosters pack could harness its size and aggression in an efficient way, they’d be hard to stop. Tasi, Masoe, Hargreaves, Guerra, etc are the reason this team has won games: they’ve been able to roll down the field and get teams going backwards.
The problem is, this doesn’t always happen and when it doesn’t, the Roosters don’t have the creative players who can re-ignite a stagnating attack. There’s no effective dummy half, the fullback can no longer punch holes in the opposition and the halves are tradesmanlike, with Mitchell Pearce keeping the NSW No.7 jersey lukewarm until an elite halfback comes along.
The one thing this team needs, until it can find a top-tier half, hooker, fullback and ballplaying backrower, is ironfisted discipline and resolve. Instead, the only contest they can count on winning every week is ‘penalties given’.
Tautau Moga, pronounced ‘Moa’ by those idiotic Warriors commentators who sound like they’re speaking a combination of Spanish and Arabic when they say the Maori players’ names (Matulino and Ropati are my two favourites), will be a dominant three-quarter but he’s not there yet.
Shaun Kenny-Dowall’s haircut is awesome.
Anthony Minichello, one of the best fullbacks of the modern era, will do his best work finding a cure for arthritis off the bench next year. He’ll have plenty of time to think.
Yet this game is impossible to pick. I’m going with the Bunnies but the Roosters fluked it in round one and fought hard against Cronulla on Monday night. They’ll miss Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, as will anyone who enjoys slapstick comedy. But they’re a chance nonetheless.
And Brian Smith is a very good coach.

Loved the call on the Warriors commentators! Good god, they sound like the biggest muppets. Everytime the boys sit down to watch a Warriors game being played in NZ, there’s a collective groan at having to listen to those two idiots talk for two hours. They’re just awful

I enjoy how they pronounce the Islander & Maori names. Bet they have more of an idea on how to pronounce tricky names than the Aussies commentators. Also enjoy their enthusiasm in the call, it’s not like watching a funeral procession.

I like your summation of Sutton.
Not sure the Roosters problems are players not listening to Brian Smith. I just think they are not that good, or have players out of form (ie Pearce). I will say this though, I think Aubbusson runs much better lines when he has played on the left side of the field, but Smith continues to play him on the right (as much for balance for the other players I assume). I would like to see him venture across the otherside.

You may be right about Aubusson, but he’s not the kind of player who’s going to make much of a difference, no matter where he plays.

The Kiwi commentators pronounce the name ‘Monga,’ which is how it’s supposed to be pronounced.
And, seriously, what was the point of throwing that reference into a column on the Rabbits and Roosters?

MG Burbank said | July 13th 2012 @ 10:11am | Report comment
Um… why not mention it? And you’re dead wrong- they don’t pronounce the g or make it ‘monga’- it’s moa, like ‘goer’.

No, i’m dead right. The ‘ng’ sound is a quick sound which comes from the back of the mouth, so if you’re used to everything being pronounced with an Australian accent (i.e with upward inflections at the end of each syllable) you might miss it.
Husband, the main NZ commentator, pronounces it correctly. I wouldn’t put any weight on how Halligan pronounces it. He has trouble enough with his own name.

You’re a true Kiwi. Personally, I couldn’t care less how they pronounce their names- those commentators are dead average.

Don’t know why the Roosters don’t get my son from Redcliffes Intrust Super Cup side, he would give them more drive from Hooker than the current pair they have, in fact he is a better player than the Broncos hooker and thats a fact.

Mike, I hope your son is as good as you say and I wish both of you the best, but Nate McCollough is a very good young number 9 and will play representative football one day.

Is Smith that good a coach ? No premierships in 20 odd seasons. No GF wins from 5 or 6 attempts. Has he ever left a club in better nick than when he took over ? Has he ever even left a club in good shape ?
As for the Warriors commentators they pronounce the names as they’re meant to be pronounced rather than just FO-NET-TICK-LEE like Aussie commentators usually do.
This is a true story. Lote Tuqiri was on the footy show not long after he started in the NRL and was asked how he pronounced his name.
His reply was “LOR-TAY TING-GEERY”. At the end of the interview they said “thanks LODDEE” maybe 2 minutes after he told them how to pronounce it properly…

Smith has consistently taken average teams and turned them into contenders: Saints in 92-93, Parramatta in 2001 and the Roosters in 2010. That takes talent on the part of the coach. One could also make the argument that Saints and the Roosters overachieved, another sign of good coaching. And remember, taking a team to a grand final is an achievement in itself.

When you say upper echelon team with halves, you have Canterbury in that league. What great halves do you see in that team Burbank?

MG Burbank said | July 13th 2012 @ 3:55pm | Report comment
Grazer, I don’t know who you are, but you need to read my articles more carefully. I never said those top-tier teams all had elite halves- just that Souths will need one to join them. Canterbury have enough strike power spread across the park to be an elite team- Barba at the back, Morris in the centres (Souths don’t have an elite three-quarter with Inglis at No 1), a massive forward pack that plays with discipline and a quality hooker. Josh Reynolds is a good player to link them together. But yes, Canterbury’s lack of an elite half or five-eighth will hurt them against the Storm and Manly.

I happen to agree with you MG & not because I am avid souths fan (maybe partly) but because Souths have done well this year. At my work place everyone knows that I am a Souths fan but even the die hards are starting to praise Souths, why – Michael Maquire, man he deserves a medal for bring Souths around & obviously the players listen to him (unlike the other team, as reported by MG).
By far the best decision was to make GI fullback & wow! has the man moved on in heaps & bounds! I have to admit that at first I thought GI another dud (much like an ex-souths fella that has not earnt his money this year!) but then he got his feet & off he went. I will be truly saddened at the departure of Dave Taylor (the only Queenslander I have ever liked!) but at least we have him this year & he is not letting he departure get in his way to going to the top (mind you I would not to get in his way at all) Go the Bunnies
