The tough times have commenced for the GWS Giants, but can they pull off a surprise result when Adelaide comes to Skoda Stadium? We’ll have live scores from 1.10pm AEST.
The new boys had a respectable start to their inaugural campaign, putting in some highly competitive efforts.
But the past few weeks have seen the big losses start to pile up, as evidenced by the massive 162-point thumping they received at the hands of Hawthorn last week.
It’s a bit of a contrast to Adelaide, who are one of four teams that share the top four positions on the ladder with 11 wins.
Today’s match is an opportunity for the Crows to catch up to Sydney and West Coast on percentage, which may be a critical come late August.
In the short-term, though, four points will almost certainly see them rise up the ladder as the Eagles host the Swans this weekend.
The Giants clearly had a game to forget last weekend, with the small positives including Chad Cornes’ two goals and the game of Toby Greene head-to-head with Sam Mitchell.
Greene had a team-best 34 touches to Mitchell’s 33.
The Crows won a Showdown battle with Port Adelaide by 58 points.
The hero of the contest was ruckman Sam Jacobs, who had a record 61 hitouts. Closely following him was Ricky Henderson, who had six goals.
The Giants have made six changes, including bringing back Israel Folau, who will be under continued scrutiny. The Crows have made three changes to their line-up.
The “elder” statesmen of the team – Cornes, Ward, Davis, Brogan, Power – have been important in the development and have led from the front.
But when you’re carrying around 15-17 teenagers in your team, it’s never going to be easy.
Today for the Giants will be about containment. They know they have a team against them that will be keen to put a cricket score on the board. So, don’t be surprised to see more defensive tactics from the Giants for the first half of this game.
We’ll have live scores from first bounce at 1:10pm AEST.

Just a suggestion if the AFL are worried about the attendance. Giants play an afternoon game at Skoda and Swans play a night game across the road at ANZ Stadium. I would be happy to walk across to go to both games. However again I have no concerns about the size of the crowd at a game as it takes only a couple of minutes to grab a pie and a beer with a small crowd there. Its the footy I come to watch. I remember the small crowds at the SCG watching the Swans back the 80s. It all takes time and the Giants will get Giant crowds.

Attendance of 7,699 is disappointing, especially when measured against the massive 12,384 crowd at the West Tigers V Penrith match.

If you have a choice of watching the top of the ladder side play (Sydney), or a side that is doing their best to finish last(GWS), and both playing in the same city, now, which one would you go and watch?

Cman, Think you better start worrying about Storm crowds in Melbourne, the AFL drew more in Cairns on the weekend. lol

You’d have to wonder what crowd they’d get if they were coming last instead of first!

wow from 38,000 first game to 7,669 today, giants indeed, think giant dud better get a few more million to cover the cracks.

Yep poor crowd but what do you expect from a team that has one win and getting flogged week in week out. They have a low fanbase that is not news and it is unlikely to grow whilst they are on dead last on the ladder.
Comparing to 38,000 is dumb. They played the Swans in that first game and thus had the novelty factor and Swans away fans in Sydney to attend.
Is any of this too obvious for you

So you’re saying now that the novelty factor has worn off and no one will attend GWS games unless they’re playing the Swans.
You paint a grim picture for the GWS Redb and their future.
But at least you’re speaking some sense for once.

Now it is dumb. When I raised the crowd average in a previous post excluding the first game I was told it their avergae is 16k as you need to include the first game. Now it is dumb to compare this crowd? How so? are you saying there were 35,000 Swan supporters to the first game? or the rest came, saw and thought they would give it a miss? Which is worse?. Make up your mind.
The Melbourne Storm is a perfect example of why expansion does not work, without News money it would have been dead years ago and they were winning premierships. Expansion into territories where you are not the number 1 sport will not work because there are not enough players, sponsors or TV money to make it work – relocate a club like Brisbane and Sydney and you have more chance as you still have the diehards from the original market. Maybe you should take up your Channel 7 Rights Issue so you can ensure you get your next batch of TV money. Believe whatever you want but instead of propping up 3 or 4 clubs add 2 more to the list.

The usual story of a young team against top quality opposition- The GWS contained them to 9 goals in the first half – After the break it got ugly in the 3rd – Can they stem the tide a bit in the 4th.

Look at other sports..When the bronco players are playing SOO,the average age of the team out there is about 20.
Yet they are still competitive & actually win.
The Young & Brave mantra is getting old.

Good point.
The baby Broncos are proof that kids can compete if they are good enough. Being young can even be an advantage.

Except that endurance is built up over several pre seasons in AFL. The Suns and Giants often start well but dont have the endurance to last the game.

When the “baby broncos” played the Roosters without their origin players their youngest player was 20 and most were 22-25. There’s a massive difference between a 22 year old and an 18 year old.

I would like to pre-empt some of the comments sure to come from the anti GWS “stalkers” who aren’t interested in AFL but can’t help stalk the threads.
“The young GWS team will be brave.”
“No one wants the foreign game.”
“10 free tickets given away with every McHappy meal”.
“Dogs are counted in the membership numbers”.
“Izzy is going back to league”.
“They live at Potts Point not Western Sydney”
“They are doomed to fail”
I’m sure I have missed some and no doubt our “friends” will be happy to keep us informed of the “facts”.
Anyway, the brave young GWS Giants from Potts Point will probably get smashed by the Crows today in front of a sub 15,000 crowd. Most of whom are McHappy meal eaters, not interested in the foreign game.

It was more the commentators doing the trolling;
“the lights are on but no-one is home”
“some of the players are going to move out of the gated community at Breakfast Creek” (I am assuming they meant Breakfast Point)

Mainly cause they have upset the other residents. If you have been into that joint, you would understand that it is it’s own little world. Not really the place to have young males between 18 and 25 enjoying life on their terms.
