If there’s been a more uplifting piece of play in the AFL this year than Karmichael Hunt’s after-the-siren goal to give Gold Coast victory over the Tigers, I haven’t seen it.
Even this hardened Richmond man can’t help but smile when watching the replay on Youtube (below).
Even in the heat of watching the game live, you had to marvel at how far the former rugby league national has come, and feel good about the evolution of his story.
Since making his debut for the Brisbane Broncos at the age of seventeen, Hunt has achieved more in nine years than scores of men could dream of in ten lifetimes.
Youngest ever Bronco. Rookie of the year honours in 2004. NRL premiership in 2006. Australian representative in a victorious Tri-Nations. State of Origin fullback for Queensland. Professional rugby union in France. Senior football at VFL and now AFL level.
It’s a glittering array of honours, and to think Karmichael is only 25 years old! (Sonny Bill Williams, take note.)
The history of Hunt’s move to AFL football has been well documented, and the vocal condemnation of the long line of critics even more so.
Short-sighted ex- and even current players voiced disapproval at his inflated wage, failing to understand that there was a picture much, much bigger that just one man. It can easily be argued that such was the publicity surrounding the coup, Hunt had paid his way before even pulling on a Suns jumper.
But back to that magical kick.
We all know the ‘boyhood dream’ story of kicking the winning goal after the siren, but in reality it seldom happens at the highest level. Jordan McMahon, in 2009, was the last player to do it, which was the only time it had happened in the last seven seasons.
In fact, Karmichel joins Chris Tarrant as the only current player to achieve this feat.
The youth and future of the Gold Coast Suns was on display. Trent McKenzie, in only his 33rd game, won the centre clearance with 16 seconds to go and unloaded one of his patented spearing punts. There are few with a more lethal left boot. Brandon Matera, a natural crumbing forward playing match number 22, fed on the crumbs, and used his guile and smarts to centre the ball.
Had he seen Hunt there, free in space 25m out from goal? I think he had. An almost imperceptible flick of the head as he stumbled while picking up the ball had given him all the information he needed.
And who had read the play better than 34 other players on the ground? The rugby league convert who would ‘never make it’. The struggler who would ‘never have a feel for the game’. The mercenary who was going to be ‘a waste of time and money’.
Hunt calmly went back, accepting some advice and words of comfort from his close friend and protégé Harley Bennell, and skipper Gary Ablett. It’s not a stretch to say that those three will be filling the podium positions of the Suns best and fairest count right now.
Pressure? Karmichael eats it for breakfast.
To perform to the level he has throughout 2012, despite his detractors looking to pick him apart at every turn during his first season, already suggested that he had the intestinal fortitude to thrive in the most trying of circumstances.
A few deep breaths. A calming look at the yellow Sherrin in his hands. A glance at the goals.
In he ambles, shrouded in the relaxed air of confidence that all elite athletes have when it’s crunch time, and the game is riding on their shoulders.
Well, you know the rest.
Was the sound of ball hitting boot the kick that was heard throughout the country? It was surely the sound of the Australian sporting landscape being forever altered.
When Karmichael Hunt retires from elite sport, he will be remembered as an AFL footballer, and given his storied past, that is an astounding truth.

Hardly got a mention in the papers. You do realise this team is running near last. And it is not Hunt being talked about, it is Falou.
Hunt was a international. Looking at that 2006 Broncos premeirship team, Lockyer went on to be possible future immortal, captained Australia and the Origin teams, Brad Thorn went on to win a Rugby World Cup. Darius Boyd moved to the Dragons and won a grand final. Not to mention the start of the greatest sporting run in State of Origin history, the magnificent seven origin wins, started without Hunt in the team. All this come from the 2006 squad. Hunt was never the star of the show, Lockyer was the star.
They also had Shane Webke and Petro Civinociva in this team.
He played rugby in France? so did Gasnier and Sonny Bill. It is not a biggie.
I would be more interested in the Swan players, they absolutely destroyed the Eagles. Jetta sounds like a goodie.

It was awesome and we all know it was. Hunt’s experience in the NRL has given him exactly what I thought it would, coolness under pressure in big moments. Lets not underestimate exactly how much pressure that kick would have been. Every doubter hoping he would miss it, his team mates all depending on him to give them their first win in 22 games and the first of the season.
When you listen to Billy and JB on Triple M, Billy doesn’t bring up his 440 other goals, he brings up the after the siren game winner from the 1994 Qualifiers against Footersgray…. He didn’t have anything to prove either.
Well done Karmichael, I never had a doubt.

I hear ya Oikee. I don’t think your necessarily disregarding what a great sporting moment it was, I think he’s making a point about the sudden love affair with K Hunt, as if this one moment vindicated his move. I don’t remember John Aloisi getting an article about how amazing he is, and how his hair spells of cinnamon as this one seems to do.
Lets just get a bit of a grip here, he’s far from earn’t his pay packet yet and has a long way to go before he does. So before this stinks anymore of a HA HA League we got one up on you, take it for what it was, a good kick, by a great athlete who unfortuently will never be known as a great in either sport, and I believe that is the real tragedy.

What sudden love affair is that. There have been several articles about K Hunt’s progression this year. This is putting some icing on the top.
In any case, the Hunt will fail type article would get more coverage because it gets more of a reaction than a good news story. Want proof? see Folau.
I dont hear any RL types like Matty ‘loveabun’ Johns calling for Hunt to return. Why? Because he is actually doing well in AFL and that doesnt sell as many papers.

He is doing well in comparisson to Folau, without doubt. However he certainly is not doing well in comparisson to other players on the same money. What is your yardstick?
I believe the call for Folau to return to League is due to the fact he quite clearly isn’t built, nor does he suit the AFL game. And instead of being wasted like he is at the moment, we would much rather see him prosper back in the NRL.
But really, I see them both as AFL boys now anyway, good luck to them, the NRL certainly hasn’t suffered from their loss.

And this line is why AFL people dont really get it, outside AFL cirles is a world being played out right now. Lets take Wembley, ok lets say Wembley next weekend. Did you know that their will be some aussie boys playing at this ground, on a world stage next weekend,. ?
No of course you didn’t.
And Lockyer during 2006, you know he captained the Broncos Maroons and Austrlia each to victory that year, won nurmerous awards, like man of Match, Wally Lewis award, Golden boot award amoung others.
No of course not, your more interested in Hunt kicking a goal at Cairns at a satdium called cazely.
Not Wembley, not Old Trafford, not the Olmypic or the mighty Suncorp.
Up the road at Cairns in front aof a few thousand expats, meanwhile this weekend, Aussies have 4 or 6 players about to run around wembley for a almighty clash in the oldest comp cup tie fianl in the world.
Lets just put Hunts kick in perspective now, compared to the drop goal where Johnny Wilkinson got Knighted winning a worldcup against the Wallabies In Sydney.
Now you tell me, which is more important, because according to you, worldstage does not matter.

GCS, i am not upset, i am just trying to put this into perspective for you, you refuse to even think about what i am trying to say.
Look, picture this,
Origin, biggest rugby league stage in the world, over 4 million Queenslanders watching, over 7 million NSwelshmen watching, a few million Kiwis scattered here and over New Zealand, 6 million Papuans New Guineans along with it being beamed “live” and delayed BBC in England, and Ameirica live as well on sportone or whatever, showtime into The Middle east and where ever else.
Now you got that pictured. Cooper Cronk slots a 75th minute field goal from 40 metres out on the biggest stage and biggest pressure ever, a Origin decider. In front of 52 thousand mad raving lunatic Queenslanders who pay 130 dollars a head for the privalige.
It landed 10 metres behind the goal posts as well.
A slap on the back get on with it. Hunt and Falou cant kick goals, and never on a world stage, and never will.
Cooper Cronk has, Johhny Wilkinson has, Benji Marshal has and Darren Lockyer, well he gets a highway named after him, plus a statue, plus whatever else he wants.
And when him and Mal go to England, people will be looking for them, looking out for autographs and what not.
Mal is God in PNG, God. Go have alook if you dont believe me.

And let this also be a lesson for anyone who cares. You can’t play in the Rugby League World Cup if you dont have a domestic league. Italy has this, along with America and all the teams lining up next year, even Cook Islands.

Appreciate it for what it was, a newcomer to the code, reading the play better than nearly everyone else on the ground at that moment and when the pressure was really on, he was able to stay cool and win the game for his team.

We had Mundine Williams and Thorn, Gasnier well before Hunt or Falou.
The only reasons these guys moved was the money, it is well known fact. Nobody can say otherwise.
The reason they are coming back is also for money. League coffers will be overflowing with it soon enough, and we wont be wasting it on ex-players.
You see league is a funny code, it gets right into the unwanted, the down on your luck types, the ones others spit out, the fat boys, the small boys, the guys who got sand kicked in their face as a kid./
You know the guys, the ones in the magizines with huge musles are girls hanging off both arms.
oh yeah, we are that sport.
And Micheal of Brisbane, is their a world stage somewhere around the world you play on, please dont try telling me it is in Cairns.
World stadiums are where the games from around the world can play. In unions and leagues case it is Wembley, Old trafford, Olmypic stadium and Suncorp is now known worldwide.
Same as Origin is being beamed worldwide to broadcasters. Played at Suncorp.
The soccer final, held at Suncorp, the rugby union final, at Suncorp, the Bledisloe Suncorp, The NRL semi’s Suncorp, Rugby league world cup, Suncorp.
Its a well known fact mate, lets not pretend we dont know, it just makes you look silly.
It is the only purpose built rectangle stadium over 50 thousand in Australia. Denying this is futile.
It is revered by 3 codes, not 1, not 2, but 3.
Finally, you can talk Hunt up all you like, but compared to bargain basement worldclass Sonny Bill Williams, Hunt is b-grade.
Sonny Bills return to league will net the game at least 20 million first year alone. We can double his pay the next offer, which as it stands is only 800 thousand.
This guy is a athlete, everyone knows it, the world knows it. He is the jewel in the crown, so to speak. Wait till next year, league will be going to another level, big fire, big aircraft(bombers) big men and sexy girls. Proper cheergirls.
We have the worlds biggest human, the worlds biggest dog, not digby, Dogzilla, Ali Barber and now $BW.
All this being towed by a coal-train and their billions. .
It does not get any better than that, trust me.

The irony of AFL fans expressing admiration for the Wallabies and wishing their success cannot be overlooked on this site. AFL poses the single greatest threat to the success of the Wallabies in the next 20 years. Rugby is becoming by far and away the biggest loser from AFL’s recent growth in Sydney for example.
Its funny cause Rugby League and AFL actually have more in common culturally in this country than any other codes, yet their fans are becoming increasingly antagonistic towards each other.

As a Richmond man, I actually like the fact that we’re playing a home game there, because if we can’t beat Gold Coast wherever we’re playing them, then it shows exactly where our team is, and how far we still have to go.
I’d like to think next year they’ll be mature enough as a group to win this match, which will provide the impetus for our first finals appearance since 2001.

Both Syd and Hawthorn are MCG bound in September, Richmond I’m sorry to say, are heading down the same well worn path. Well done to GCS & Karmichael Hunt all the same. Well done to Cameron Rose for keeping his composure after this disaster for all Tigers supporters too. Other teams supporters I don’t think really know what it’s like to be a Richmond person. One word: Excruciating!!

Very Exciting, great for football in the far north, which is becoming a bit of a hot spot.
Q clash should be entertaining …… hopefully.
Have the Suns turned a corner of sorts ?, can they match it with middle of the road sides reguarly ?.

Anyone who watched that moment felt the sheer joy of it. Amazing that Chris Tarrant is the only current player to have kicked for goal after the siren to win. Lucky boy indeed K.

And yes, it was a great moment in AFL highlights for this year (highlight of the year?).

micka….I am just saying that as he is a highly paid player earning a million plus it would be expected that he kick the goal from 25m directly in front….let us not put his 7 disposals up on a pedastel….he is paid as a footballer to perform…in my opinion he did what was expected.
Had it been from 45m plus out then he may be given higher praise….
you blokes are the ones adding mayo to a situation that at the end of the day was a gimme

Yeah… Im just saying that it was on a 45 degree angle not out in front (have you actually watched it? Geometry not a strong point?) and Buddy Franklin is also a massively high paid player and I would NOT have put the ball in his hands to do the same thing. I would NOT expect him to have kicked straight despite people calling him the best player in the game. Nothing is a gimme in that situation.
No one is talking about disposals so I’m not sure where that came into it, we are talking about high pressure after the siren kicks to win a game for an underperforming club with a mountain of pressure and ridicule.
I know he is paid an absolute mountain, noone would argue that point, but that doesn’t automatically give you skill or poise under pressure. If anything it makes it harder and gives doubters an out. If he missed it he is a massive waste of money by the AFL and if he kicks it he is just doing what he b****y well should have. If only Buddy could do the same reliably.

sorry micka i dont agree with you….he did what he was supposed to do so let us not carry on for days talking up how good a kick it was.

Because it’s relevant. The possessions aren’t.
You’re saying that because Hunt is a highly paid player he should have kicked it 100% and you believe the goal is overrated.
I am comparing him to another highly paid player who is actually a forward, who half the AFL community would fellate, but who sprays (at a guess) at least half of his set shots. I just picked buddy because I assume you are a Hawks supporter. I’m a Carlton supporter. I would not back Eddie Betts to make the set shot under that sort of pressure.
It wasn’t a good kick, it was competent, but the key for me is that there aren’t many in the AFL who would be able to give that much and they don’t cop anywhere near the doubt and scrutiny as Hunt.

Micka – “It wasn’t a good kick, it was competent” That is correct so if Bett’s or Cloke did miss that goal you would say in that act they were incompetent, that they missed a goal they should of got, that they cost their team the game and they blew it.
Not stuffing up doesn’t mean your act was brilliant.

Not stuffing up means you didn’t stuff up when a lot of the people who have played the game all their lives do and frighteningly often… not to mention with faaaarrrrr less pressure on their shoulders.
Clokes a spud kick generally, I can almost guarantee he would have missed that shot. He has missed easier ones. But somehow he is so highly regarded that he is effectively holding Collingwood to ransom and actually threatening the viability of other players who haven’t signed yet.
If Abblet or Bennell kicked it they would have been ice cold operators, saving the face of a club in dire straits.

To be honest Macca I would have acknowledged the pressure of the shot. Given he is a forward and has been in the game a while I admit that I would be less understanding.
Has anyone ever looked into different strike rates between Karmichael versus some of these other blokes? I am very confident that even though he gets less of it he uses it more effectively.

I am with you Hawks – “magical kick” my arse, yes there was the pressure of taking a kick after the siren but the angle was slight (not directly out in front but definitely not 45 degrees) from 25m you see at least a dozen more difficult goals kicked every game.
And he had what 10 possessions, I think there are players much more resposible for the win than Hunt. Maybe The richmond midfield who at the last centre bounce left 2 blokes free on the wing and all the Suns on ballers free at the back of the ruck contest.

Unfair comment Hawks9108. If Hunt isn’t coming third in the Suns B&F right now (behind Ablett and Bennell), he’d be a close 4th or 5th.
Admittedly, his last three games have been quiet (even though 10 disposals, 6 tackles and 2 goals including the match-winner is still a reasonable game), but he’s actually been quite destructive at times this year.

Sorry Cameron I have watched a few games of the suns this year and i would not say that he has played any destructive games….if you are calling 10 disposals a game a good game then it confirms for me that the pass mark that you all have for this bloke is quite low.
My point is that all the work that has gone into him to get him to a 10 possession game is wasted as it would have been better being put into someone to raise their possession tally from 15-25…that is someone who can be considered a natural of the game..

Cameron Rose said | July 16th 2012 @ 10:07am | Report comment
Hawks, if you’re suggesting that 15 disposals a game is okay, then that’s funny because that is his exact average per game this year.
He’s topped 15 or more ten times this year (including a few over 20), but more than that it has been the eye-catching nature of his work, and his presence around the contest. He’s still only a second year player, so in that regard just think of how much improvement is still to come.

Macca said | July 16th 2012 @ 10:24am | Report comment
Cameron – He is averaging less than 15 possessions a game and only about 3 tackles, if that gets you in the top 5 of the B&F it isn’t a strong top 5.
His work is only eye catching because when he does the most basic thing (like kick a goal from 25m) everyone says he is the player of the century.

I’m not sure if he’s in their Top 5 in the B&F but he’s been a lot better then quite a few of the Suns’ second year players and probably one of the few to show real improvement. That being said if any club has a weak Top 5 B&F it will be Gold Coast

I’d like to see those players with better stats who aren’t playing. You would imagine that Guy Mckenna and the Suns selection panel would pick the team most likely to win so if there was a player like that in the reserves then they’d have been picked by now.
I’ve never agreed with picking players just because they may be good in 5 years time. What’s wrong with making them earn a game in the resveres and forcing their way in? If they’re not considered to be playing better then a player averaging 15 touches and 3 tackles then they can’t be doing that much in the reserves. You only have to look at the Demons (Bailey era, not Neeld) to see what happens when you hand games to kids who haven’t done enough to deserve them.

My point exactly Matt, here we have Hunt, averaging 15 possessions and having had 11, 8 and 10 in his last 3 games yet he isn’t demoted or even taken out of the midfield group.
He has 16 possessions or less in 10 out of 15 games, he has had 4 games where has had 10 or less possessions. the 2 games against North and one against Brisbane are keeping that average high.
And I didn’t say they weren’t playing at all but the come in to the side and go out, or don’t get the time on the ball that Hunt does.

I’m not saying that Hunt’s figures have been great. However in the team that he’s currently playing in, those figures don’t nescessarily mean that he should be dropped. If he was in a better side then of course he wouldn’t be playing but Gold Coast are absolutely rubbish right now.
It’s all well and good to look at his figures in isolation but what about those of other weak performers? What about the reserves form of those trying to break into the side? They’re currenty 1-14 so I’d say that there’s a good chance that they have a whole bunch of players producing less than Hunt.
There’s also the fact that most of these kids are still 18-19 and don’t have the tank to play a full season so need constant rotation in and out of the side whereas Hunt probably doesn’t need to have a week or two off for a rest.

SO how long do you keep going, let’s say he has his fourth 10 or less possession game in a row, do you keep going with him?
And how does this make the other players feel, Hunt not only holding his spot but being lauded as brilliant while posting 10 possession games and they are getting dropped?
And even if there isn’t a kid knocking down the door in the 2′s could the result be much worse? And who knoes sometimes the step up in quality is actually the making of some players.
On top os all that Hunt will be 26 at the start of next year, given it would take remarkable improvement for him to be a quality player in the next couple of years why not promote youth?
July 16th 2012 @ 2:23pm
Matt F said | July 16th 2012 @ 2:23pm | Report comment
As I said, as average as Hunt may be playing right now their clearly isn’t anyone doing enough to force him out of the side. Given the pressure that Mckenna has been under i can’t imagine that he’d be playing Hunt if he didn’t believe he warranted a start. perhaps your questions shouldn’t be directed at Hunt, but at the fringe players who don’t seem to be doing enough to force out a guy who has 11, 8 and 10 touches in the last 3 weeks.
I wouldn’t laud Hunt as being brilliant (although any kick to win the game after the siren deserves some plaudits) but there must be a reason why he isn’t in the side. If it’s not because of his own form then it must be because the players waiting in the wings are doing worse then he is which is a real blight on them. God forbid they push their kids to actually earn their spot in the side.
Hunt potentially still has 5+ years left at AFL level. If they think that he can give good service for that time, and maybe win a premiership with them, then why would they move him on? Who’s to say that the 19 y/o they replace Hunt with, if they chose to drop him, and who clearly isn’t doing enough to force Hunt out of the side on merit, won’t be delisted in a few years?
On the weekend there were 6 players who got fewer disposals then Hunt while Swallow, their number one pick, only got 11 and Rischitelli only got 13. given Rischitelli’s pedigree, particularly how he ended his career at the Lions (B&F winner wasn’t he?) I know who I’d be more dissapointed with. In the game against the Eagles, where Hunt got 8 touches, the Suns had 12 players who got 10 touches or less and only 5 players who got it more than 14 times. You make it sound like every other player gets 20+ touches a week.

Macca said | July 16th 2012 @ 2:34pm | Report comment
I am not trying to make it sound like every player gets 20+ touches a week but a good player would. You say that there must be another reason that Hunt get’s a game every week if it isn’t form but don’t canvas the most logical, because they don’t want to drop him because it is bad for marketing and this “isn’t Karmichael great” articles they love to see in the media.
Also if Karmichael was a normal AFL payer who had played the game all his life then yes he would have another 5 years left but he is a bloke who clealry is still struggling with the game at almost 26 in a side choc full of high end draft talent (with more to come), in a couple of years time they are going to be hitting their straps and he is going to be turning 28 and an average player, he will be the definition of the term “list clogger”.

Matt F said | July 16th 2012 @ 2:48pm | Report comment
The point that I’m making is that the Suns don’t actually have many “good” players at the moment. They obviously don’t think that they have a player waiting in the wings who can do better then Hunt right now. In fact the stats show that there are a number of players who are currently in the 22 that aren’t doing as well as Hunt is right now. The stats over the last few weeks back this up.
That’s great that you think that Hunt will be nothing more then a list clogger, and you may well be right. Then again so may some of those high draft picks. Clearly those up on the Gold Coast disagree with you

Matt f – A 28 year old midfielderer who is getting around 20 touches a game (which would be a dramatic improvement from Karmichael in the space of 2 years) is a list clogger, no 2 ways about it.
A 18 – 19 year old kid who will be 20-21 in 2 years time can afford not to be doing as well as hunt because they have more potential and being exposed to AFL football fast tracks their progress.

Very harsh on Hunt. He’s one of the very few second year GC players who have actually shown improvement this season. Many at the Suns also credit Hunt with Bennel’s improvement this season. His attitude has apparently improved dramatically since he moved in with Hunt.
