There is usually somewhat of a lull after the State of Origin series, as fans, players, coaches and the media readjust to focusing on club football.
However, this season, some sensational NRL action and some big headlines have ensured that rugby league has sustained momentum after the representative season, rather than experiencing any sense of a letdown.
WIZ: Cleary rebuilds, Sonny Bill reloads, Sharks resurge
After an interesting week of footy, it’s time to dust off the old ‘ranting and raving’ segment and analyse what issues have me seething and what topics have me smiling.
Rant: The Luke Lewis situation
By now everyone knows that club legend Luke Lewis has asked for a release from Penrith, and despite Lewis being the team’s best player, and its heart and soul, the Panthers have granted it to him.
The question everyone wants to know is why, but sadly with both parties determined to keep their lips sealed for the time being, the truth is in no danger of being revealed any time soon.
Luke Lewis is a club junior and revered within the local community. He should have played out his career at the only club he ever knew, but something has gone drastically wrong, with both Lewis and the Panthers evidently happy that he’s departing.
There is no doubt that there is more to this story than has been told. The issues seemed to have arisen when Lewis was stripped of the captaincy during the Origin period, with coach Ivan Cleary stating at the time that the decision was made so that Lewis could focus on his representative duties.
However, reports have surfaced that Cleary felt Lewis didn’t have the required football brain to be skipper, which seems absolutely ludicrous. Whatever the truth, the whole situation has been extremely poorly handled.
It seems unfathomable to me that a side that is second last on the table would be so accommodating in allowing their captain and best player to leave the club.
It’s a disgrace, and Penrith fans deserve some transparency on the whole matter.
Rave: Ben Barba
The Bulldogs fullback is in a purple patch of form at present, and Friday night was no exception.
Opposition coaches must surely be on the verge of instructing their halves to kick the ball to anyone but Barba, such is the maestro’s extraordinary ability to counter-attack, even from deep within his own half.
A few weeks ago we saw Barba orchestrate a 100 metre try, and against Parramatta on Friday night, he once again regathered a kick near his own try line, evaded the Parramatta kick chasers, and then pinned his ears back to race the length of the field and score a sensational solo try.
Far from being the sole highlight of his game, Barba also registered three try assists, and was brilliant in defence.
Does a Dally M Medal await him?
Rant: Sonny Bill Williams media coverage
Last week also saw the news that Sonny Bill Williams, one of the most impressive athletes in the world, was reportedly returning to the NRL.
This should have been something of a coup for the code, as Williams could have easily earned more money elsewhere, or played in a game with a greater global presence, but chose rugby league.
Yet instead of his comeback being heralded as a victory for the game, it was met with bitter opinions that he shouldn’t be welcomed back. It seems many in the rugby league fraternity have long memories and are not willing to forgive and forget.
The question needs to be asked: if Williams had simply left the Bulldogs and headed to another NRL team, would there be the same animosity towards his decision to (allegedly) play for the Roosters next season?
Sonny Bill’s return should be celebrated, plain and simple.
Rave: The Reynolds boys
Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynolds and Bulldogs five-eighth Josh Reynolds are not related. But they could be playing a lot of football together if they maintain their current form.
It’s silly to speculate on who will be playing State of Origin next year, such is the amount of time before next year’s series. But by the same token, Blues fans should be salivating at the thought of the Reynolds boys being selected as the Blues halves pairing.
Adam has shown a tremendous skill level that the Blues were sorely lacking in this year’s Origin series. His split second decision, on a broken play, to kick for his winger against Newcastle last week showed composure, creativity, vision and skill. The rookie looks the goods.
Meanwhile, Josh is a tough little customer. Early in the season, he showcased plenty of aggression and spirit. Though, as he has gained confidence, he has also started to demonstrate plenty of talent. He has a brilliant kicking game, and good footwork, as evidenced by his Brad Fittler-like double step try against the Eels.
If both players can maintain their performances, they won’t look out of place on the representative scene next year.
Rant: Jason Taylor’s Bulldogs complaint
The Bulldogs are the form team of the competition, having won seven games in a row. Behind the sensational and scintillating play of fullback Ben Barba, the Dogs should be the toast of the NRL with everyone celebrating their turnaround under the leadership of Des Hasler.
Instead, the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald sport section on Saturday contained a story in which Jason Taylor claimed the Bulldogs consistently use illegal obstruction plays to score tries.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Bulldogs use of decoy runners. The Bulldogs don’t run behind a teammate while they’re carrying the ball, and if an attacking player receives the ball outside the decoy runner, and a defender isn’t physically impeded – which is exactly how the Dogs score their tries – it cannot be obstruction. End of story.
However, my real issue is that Taylor called referees boss Bill Harrigan to complain about the Bulldogs tactics. Yes, you read that right, a Fairfax journalist called the referees boss to complain about a team’s tactics.
Missing the limelight or something, JT?

Agreed on Sonny Bill. I actually dislike the man on a personal level to an extent which surprises me, but there’s no way his return can be anything other than a good thing for the code (even if it ends up being a bad thing for SBW or the Roosters on an individual level)
All NRL fans are going to be sure to watch his return: viewing figures, attendance figures will go up. Union fans from around the world, NZ, France, Japan- stand a much greater chance of tuning in, and if they tune in, the scales may well fall from their eyes as they watch. If that isn’t worth celebrating, I don’t know what is.

Would have to see them in big game atmosphere before we put them in sky blue. We should get a chance come semi’s

The extra fans at Roosters games, and the increased TV ratings that SBW will generate, off er no benefit to the game?

Hey Ryan, I’m yet to meet anyone thats willing to part with their hard earned to go see SBW specifically, even the roosters fan fans that i know. I like most people watch and go to the footy when possible, but I won’t be changing my habits for SBW, and would venture to say the same applies to most peolpe. It seems the people most excited about his supposed return is the media. I have no real issues with SBW, it’s just his fly in fly out contract offers little more than a sideshow for the above reasons.
On another SBW point, I would have thought everyone has learned their lesson. When a single player is eating up 30% of the cap the players around that highly paid player are ussually not Preimership material, look at the players the Dogs were letting go to keep him before. League is a team sport and needs to be approached as such. Perhaps SBW isn’t interested in preimerships, perhaps his interst lays in pay day ( can’t blame him, I know mine does ) but the point is yopu need a good team, even the storm are struggling with the Big 3 concept.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on your first point, mate. I think SBW will generate extra interest that will transfer into more people watcing when he plays, both at the game and on telly. The difference may be smallm, but it will still be a positive for the game.
On your second point, totally agree, 100%. Someone else mentioned it already, but I’d prefer the Dogs had their current forward pack, rather than SBW and a bunch of scrubs.

Fair enough, on the NSW halves / Reynolds senario, who ever the the Blues coach is next year, they should consider this semi’s as an audition, we should have, Carney, Reynolds, Reynolds, Wallace and maybe Moloney if the warriors get on a run. NSW NEED halves that can control a team and a game when the bright lights are shinning.

Can’t agree on SBW . You ask ” The question needs to be asked: if Williams had simply left the Bulldogs and headed to another NRL team, would there be the same animosity towards his decision to (allegedly) play for the Roosters next season?” ……
Not all as he would of stayed in the game every player did what he did there would be no Rugby League. The man knows no loyalty and is without honor. Basically he lacks the qualities you rely on to be successful team – never letting your mates down. Any coach who would consider signing this looser deserves everything they get.

Mark Gasnier essentially broke contract with the Dragons. He did it in a more formal and respectful way, but he did it nonetheless. He was welcomed back. As for no loyalty, you could leverage that claim against almost everyone in the modern era.

I think he found a loophole (though a fairly big one, because it was actually third party payments that he hadn’t received), because he wanted to break contract and go overseas.
As a Dogs fan, I hated the way Sonny Bill left more than anyone. But you can’t ban a player for life for breaking a contract. Boo him all you want when he returns, but the fact that he chose rugby league should be celebrated, because he had plenty of other options up his sleeve. That’s my only point.

Ryan – I’m a Dogs fan also. When Sonny Bill left I wasn’t filthy that he’d left, more disappointed that he felt that was the only option he had.
I don’t think he should be banned. He’s served out his time that he can’t play for another NRL club.
I disagree with you that he’s “choosing rugby league”. It’s more that it fits in with his schedule. The indications are that it’s one year and back to rugby. As long as he can play RU in Japan and box and miss the Bulldogs game. Anything else SBW ?

Re: Gasnier. They didn’t pay him everything they said they would. That’s a pretty fundamental breach of one of the terms of his contract. That’s not a ‘loophole’. Sonny Bill on the other hand got everything he asked for, and then did a runner in the middle of the night. Not really similar at all.

The point is that many players have left rugby league, and then been welcomed back. Yes Sonny Bill left under much worse conditions and circumstances, but considering drug takers and other law breakers have been welcomed backed more warmly than he has, I find the animosity bizarre and out of whack.
Fine, boo him. I probably will too! But saying he shouldn’t be allowed back is childish and stupid.

SBW should NOT be welcome back into the game. He should be banned from the NRL. It’s not leaving the code or the club halfway through he contract that’s the issue. it’s how he did it, just walking out, not even telling the club his intentions till he left. He should have done what any player with integrity would have done and asked for a release.

If i remember corectly, Sonny Bill was banned from the game, for 3 years i think. Like anyone he is now allowed to come back without any hard feelings.
He does not even have to apoligise to the dogs , it is up to him. Remember, he piad them 700 thousand as well.
The NRL sshould be able to sit back and enjoy the fruits Sonny Bill will bring to the code, see how he is travelling after 12 months, if everything is good, lots of stories, heaps of rivalries, massive interest, then throw the book at him. ?
yes get excited.
The money book, that checky booky thingy.
The guy is worth 2 million a year to rugby league, he will be making the game and clubs 10 times that amount just bringing him back to the game.
Its a business rugby league, once we start to treat it like a business we will be all better off. The game still produces, you only have to look at the game last night, and finally in front of a great crowd, 20 thousand lucky fans who witnessed what was close to the game of the century.
Now imagine next year if Sonny Bill is running around for the Roosters,
This game will probably be a Sunday game, and you will double that crowd. So, you tell me he is not worth the money.
The Warriors and Broncos will pack out their games, the kids and women love this guy, cant get enough of him.
I will be one welcoming him back with open arms. we have bought a lump of gold, it is now up to the game to show off that lump and make some money outta it.
Treat him like a commodity and you will be fine. He is a walking money pit. Time to put the sooky sulks away, enjoy a supreme athlete. He makes the ablett’s, the Falou’s, the Hunts look like amatuers.
And he can box as well.
