It is one of the most important matches of the season not just for the two teams, but also for the finals race. Adelaide Crows host the West Coast Eagles at AAMI Stadium this afternoon. We’ll have live scores and commentary from from 2.10pm AEST.
One of these sides will firm as favourites for a top two spot today, while the other will be hoping to get some luck along the way, or they could fall into the risky fifth or sixth spots by the end of the season.
Last week was a nice little warm up for the Crows leading into this massive game – on the road against Greater Western Sydney, cruising to a massive percentage booster.
There didn’t seem like there was much that needed achieving for the Crows. But with a string of players being rested for the game, those fringe players would have got plenty out of the game, as well as knowing the side wasn’t at full strength, yet able to play a sublime second half of football.
The age-old question ‘Is that good preparation for a big game?’ will no doubt get bandied around. I don’t think it matters that much. Adelaide’s such a good team right now that it doesn’t really matter who they come up against.
There were a couple of weeks there that might have had some fans a little worried. However, with the inclusions of Michael Doughty, Graham Johncock, Kurt Tippett and Jared Petrenko, it only solidifies the team’s chances today.
For West Coast though, last week was rough. They got belted for most of the match against Sydney at home.
Sure, they kept in touch for most of the first half, but never seemed to have that killer blow that could topple the Swans.
If anything, it’s probably the warning sign of the Eagles reaching crisis point with its injuries and suspensions.
Remember, they’ve been without Mark LeCras, Mark Nicoski and Andrew Embley for pretty much the entire season, as well as other regular injuries as the season’s progressed.
Losing Luke Shuey and Quinten Lynch because of suspension seemed to really hurt last week. They get Lynch back for this match, while Ashton Hams will be important in the forward line.
The amazing return is that of Beau Waters – he went in for arthroscopic surgery on his knee just over a fortnight ago. Now he’s back in the team. He reminds me of the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail: “It’s just a flesh wound!”.
Waters would play under almost any ailment. This will be a great help for the Eagles off half back.
The ruck combination of Nic Naitanui and Dean Cox was kept quiet last week. Whether that will happen again this week is uncertain with Sam Jacobs to almost be a lone hand in the tall department for the Crows.
But, the side is still a shadow of what it could be and might struggle, despite a good record at AAMI Stadium against the Crows in their history.

A massive statement this afternoon from the Adelaide Crows, as they take out the West Coast Eagles. It’s consecutive 8 goal-plus losses against the top two for West Coast. It makes their task of making the top four very tough from here, especially with a Derby on the way plus games against Collingwood and Hawthorn.

The Eagles did challenge during the third quarter, but the Crows steadied and managed to kick away.
The Crows were fierce early on in the game, with their tackling pressure right up there. The likes of Patrick Dangerfield, Bernie Vince and Jason Porplyzia were exceptional, while Josh Jenkins to me was a massive positive for a team on the up.
For West Coast, it’s a case of some tired legs of some of their younger brigade that might be struggling after covering up so many injuries throughout the year. But there’s some serious concerns for John Worsfold and his charges in the lack of workrate in the first half. Really disappointing early. They rallied in the second half, but in reality were never in the contest.

Well, the West Coast got themselves within 23pts with a few minutes left in that quarter. But 2 very late goals from the Crows has them 6 goals up… and in reality has snuffed out any chance of an Eagles revival.
The West Coast midfield had lifted immensely that quarter, but just couldn’t take it through for a full quarter.
The Crows a quarter away from going back on top of the table… for 24 hours at least…

As you can see from the stats, the Eagles really have been able to cut a lot of stats back to make them as close to even as possible… except for the disposal stats – still a good 50+ away from Adelaide.
They had a great 10 minute period of Q2, but couldn’t get any pressure on the scoreboard.
If they can start off quick in Q3, who knows what could happen. But the Crows heavy favourites.

Late goal to the Quinten Lynch keeps West Coast in the contest… just. 5 goals is a massive margin at half time. But they have fought back from this on the road this season (in Hobart against a very good NM).
But Adelaide has fairly dominated the first half and deserve this lead. It’s been the workrate that’s been the most impressive feature of their game.

Well, Waters has been named in the final lineup. The warm up’s will be interesting. We’ve seen a couple of very very late changes made because of injuries in the warm ups, but I’d say Waters is a goer.
As for Tippett… he doesn’t have Walker to contend with so he’s the main man today. I reckon he’ll kick 4 today.
