Bulldogs win grudge match against Manly

Canterbury claimed rugby league’s grudge match of the year with a gripping 20-12 victory that left Des Hasler grinning on Friday night.
The Bulldogs coach, who left the Sea Eagles last year one week after winning his second premiership, would’ve had his heart in his mouth as his former side mounted a stirring comeback after being down 12-0 at halftime at Brookvale.
Gary Freeman: The secret to Dessie’s success
The match wasn’t sealed until man-of-the-match Ben Barba scored his second four-pointer with two minutes remaining, capping off a sensational performance that also included two try-saving tackles.
The Sea Eagles had been waiting for Hasler’s return all season and started accordingly.
In the 16,080-strong crowd, anti-Hasler banners waved in the breeze while the two-time premiership-winning coach was booed as his picture flashed up before kick-off.
Co-captain Jason King levelled imposing Bulldogs prop Sam Kasiano with a huge hit in the third minute, made even more physical with a brutal head clash that left Kasiano with a suspected cheekbone fracture.
Manly peppered the Bulldogs tryline early, but it was the visitors who came up with the points, typically through prolific try-scorer Barba.
The brilliant fullback chased his own grubber after 19 minutes and was in the right spot to accept a wayward offload from his opposite Dean Whare to dot down under the posts.
He would do the same for the last try of the match, when he caught his own grubber as it rebounded off the goalposts to seal the match.
Canterbury’s first-half blitz also included a perfectly-executed play from five-eighth Josh Reynolds, who kicked on the first tackle from a scrum into the waiting arms of winger Sam Perrett.
It was a particularly courageous performance by the high-flying Bulldogs, who lost Kasiano and halfback Kris Keating, who suffered a hamstring injury, after just 21 minutes.
Bulldogs centre Josh Morris looked to have scored the match-sealer in the 72nd minute but was denied when video referee Steve Clark found a knock-on from teammate Dale Finucane in the lead-up.
After the Bulldogs claimed first points of the second half with a penalty, the Sea Eagles kick-started a comeback with tries to their co-captains coming in a 10-minute period.
First, centre Jamie Lyon snuck around Barba, who was trying to shadow a Daly Cherry-Evans kick over the deadball line, to dot down.
It was Barba’s only blemish of the night, but it cost the Bulldogs six points and then prop Jason King accepted a short pass from Anthony Watmough to crash over next to the uprights to reduce the margin to just two.
Manly coach Geoff Toovey fired off a surprising rant towards referees Ben Cummins and Brett Suttor, questioning their penalty decisions as well as their overall performance.
“They had terrible games, terrible decisions. I can’t wait until they try and explain some of them,” a fired-up Toovey said.
“… The penalties are like a lucky dip – you just don’t know what’s going on.”
The Bulldogs’ eighth win in a row gives them outright leadership while Manly are in serious danger at the bottom of the eight – just two wins ahead of the chasing pack and with a tough run home.
But while the finals are looming for the increasingly-impressive Bulldogs, Hasler said Friday night was simply another learning experience for his young team.
“We had to overcome things like (injuries) and we did that well. I was particularly pleased against a side like this Manly side, who are so well known for and so good at grinding out games,” Hasler said.
“We had to do that for large portions of that game. And I just think that it’s a really good experience for this young Bulldogs side.”

Could you see any spare space there? It was standing room only as it has been for quite a few matches there this year. If that happens to be 16,080 then I fail to see what the problem is.
Was an incredible occasion but no doubt you are someone who prefers to find negatives.

It’s not about “finding negatives”… it’s about looking at the reality.
It was the match of the round, a Friday night game that got more press and hype than any other… I just can’t see how 16k resembles a good result?

Scott, the ground was packed. It was standing room only. There was no space for anyone else there. Manly were there in droves.

Hard to beat the small ground atmosphere of a packed Brooky though.

It would not matter if you took the game to bigger stadiums, only bulldogs fans would show up. So you really cant win Scott.
I wonder how many weeks Jason King will get for spear tackling Kasiano’s head. We had Paul Kent the other week talking about Nate Myles use of his head as a weapon, well King launched his head 10x worse than Myles has ever done, he not only took Kasiano out of the game, he also split his own head open and still was able to play on.
He does this every week King if you watch him, and Manly went high all night, the only low tackle was Matai, and he got penalised for going high.
Jamie Lyon did his normal, every tackle got up with his arms wide open crying to ref for penalty.
What else, oh, 5 minute Rose, Georgy boy, 5 minutes and does not come back on. Get off the muffins George.
That as they say Scott is a huge crowd for Manly, they normally only get 7 to 9 thousand.
Mean while their was over 20 thousand at the struggling Titans game on the beautiful Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise, gateway to Queensland , all in the name my friend, all in the name.
I will give credit to Manly for one thing, they were alot better than the Drongos last night. Poor old Bull Bailey must have thought he had a target on his head, 3 hit-ups , 3 brutal attacks. Be some holidays for a couple of Bronco players next week.

Credit to the bulldogs they made their own luck last night. I would question whether DCE & Foran are in a bit of a form slump. Some of their 6th tackle options were below average & in tight games like this one where the Bulldogs defended so well Manly needed to get more repeat sets.

Bulldogs 2 – Eagles 0,
What i saw at Brooky lastnight was a fast, tough, physical encounter with the Dogs coming away with the goods, not the result that i wanted, but the points were on the board and the Dogs deserved the win with a gutsy performance and i congratulate them.
I am not getting involved in Hassler returning to Brooky as an opposing coach, but i did see another turncoat’s big melon sitting in the coaches box.
Not taking anything away from the Dogs, they capitalised on the Ealges mistakes, eg silly passes and a silly kick, but the Eagles certainly soften the Dogs forwards up and if it was not for the likes of Ballin for his fortress type defence the score could have been bigger.
The hit on Kasiano was a typical Jason King hit and legal, head clashes are part of the game, but no intent was there and King doesn’t lead with his melon like Myles does as mentioned in another blog, it is just the way it happened and Kasiano came out second best unfortunately.
Watching lastnights game the performance i saw from the Eagles attack was not finals, or grand finals football, apart from their defence they were pretty dismal and had better sharpen the pencil if they were to be a threat and i keep on saying this about the big fella Williams,”what the”, i just not understand his antics by trying to push defenders away, he only made one of his linebreaks lastnight that made a few metres, but this strongman tactics is not working for him and he loses ground instead of making ground, give it up Rex, you have been reading to much media.
It was good to see Brooky packed to the rafters again, Brooky is Brooky and any changes will definately change the character of the ground, one that i have been used to for most of my life.
The Eagles are due for a win next week, ?????

Isn’t it 1-1? With Brett Stewart and the rub of the green though Manly win that last night, But Hasler is obviously a better coach, Dogs were more cohesive and organised.

What was Toovey whingeing about?. that was by far the BEST game of the season. Both teams will be pretty ‘battered’ after the game… Loved it!.

By far and away the best game of the season last night.
Bias comment? nah i’m a parramatta supporter, we hate both clubs lol.
I think the win boost the dogs credentials as premiership contenders although they suffered two key injuries.
I was surprised Manly didn’t put the nail into the canterbury coffin ( but i all fairness the dogs just wouldn’t die).
As i said a great game between two teams who will be there in September.
The referees were in a tough position last night as they always are but they are only human and will always make mistakes. The penalty count is kinda like a lucky dip- ayye Geoff Toovey

Top game. Manly has to start learning to convert their many opportunities. I’ve said this all year that their defence is fine but their attack is stunted. perhaps its because the rhythm has been lost because of so many injuries and suspensions. There is also that X factor issue. Canturbury had Barba. Brett Stewart I understand was still injurred. You need that type of player for something special. Top game. Well done the doggies. Both sides are definite contenders but the dogs position makes them a stronger proposition for the premiership. Manly will now stuggle to get into the top 4, let alone secure its place in the 8.

Disappointed to read that Toovey went the refs. The refs didn’t remotely cost Manly this game.
The 10 metres was rubbish for both teams. How many times did the Dogs forwards get nailed before they even got to the advantage line ?
I agree with him about Suttor. He is the worst ref in the comp and has no place in a game like this.
Toughest, fastest, best game of the season and Toovey has to whinge about refs.
I was gobsmacked to read that Jamie Lyon doesn’t think there’s any point speaking to the refs??? Why does he do it after EVERY decision then.
There were two terrible bad twists by Manly last night. First when Watmough caught Reynolds in goal, he made a beautiful around the legs tackle but then got up and wrenched Reynolds leg. On half time Lyons tackled Barba into touch then twisted his legs so hard that Barbas upper body was flipped over.
Both Dogs players reacted to the tackles. If the NRL is fair dinkum they will be looked at.
I’ve always thought that Matt Ballin is a nice, well spoken fella off the field but he is becoming one of the biggest grubs in the game. Every tackle he has an elbow in someone’s face or is twisting their legs. I’ve only noticed it over the past month so I don’t know if it’s new to his game or if I’ve never noticed it before.
